Abstract

1,001,046. Detecting broken tools magnetically. JAMES ARCHDALE & CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1964 [March 13,1963], No.9894/63. Heading G1N. [Also in Division B3] In a multi-drilling machine each of the tools 4 passes through a loop 3 containing a pair of coils 5, 6, and completes a magnetic coupling, but if one of the tools is broken the coupling is not made, a signal lamp 16 is lit, and the machine is stopped. A pair of loops 3 is fixed on the machine, and tools 4 extend through the loop 5. Primary coils 5 are connected in series to an oscillator 9, powered by a D.C. power unit 10, from A.C. mains 11, and secondary coils 6 form a pair of arms of an A.C. bridge circuit, the other arms of which are formed by a potentiometer 12. The output from the bridge circuit is amplified at 14, to control a relay 15 which lights signal lamp 16, and operates a contactor 17, to stop the machine tool. Coils 5 are energized only when the tools are fully withdrawn and switch 13 is closed by the tool carriage. If a tool is broken the coupling between coils 5 and 6 is reduced, the bridge circuit is unbalanced and lamp 16 is lit, and the machine is stopped. A number of pairs of loops may be used, and in the case of a single tool to be tested, a dummy loop is used.
