A device for transferring articles 10 carried singly and in irregular fashion on a first conveyer 1, 2 in groups of three on to a second conveyer 6, 7 by means of pusher 11 comprises three photo-sensitive or light reflecting elements 13 which co-operate, in the region of the pusher with light sources or light emitter-detectors 12 such that the movement of the pushers 11 is interrupted if an incomplete group of articles 10 is situated in its path of travel, the elements 13 being pivoted out of the path of travel of the group of articles during the movement of the pusher. The first conveyer comprises two endless bands 1, 2 which deliver the articles therebetween into abutment with a stop until three have accumulated, whereupon three light beams 12a or a single elongated beam are broken causing the pusher 11 to transfer the articles to the second conveyer comprising two endless bands 6, 7. During this transfer, the elements 13 are pivoted upwardly about pin 15 by linkage 14, 19, 18 actuated by a rotating cam 17. The latter is incorporated with the drive shaft 20, 16 for the pusher 11. Also incorporated in this drive system is an engageable clutch K and a brake B which is engaged when the clutch is disengaged. The head of the pusher 11 comprises a plate 11a the width of three articles and an abutment surface 11b to arrest further articles whilst the pusher is operating. During operation the breaking of the three light beams energizes a relay which causes energization of the clutch K to start the transfer operation and connects a contact which together with a switch 22 acts as a holding circuit for the relay. The switch 22 is operated from a cam 21 on the drive shaft 16. When the pusher is retracted, the switch 22 is opened and if all three light beams are not broken the relay is de-energized and the brake B applied.
