Abstract

A chlorosulphonated polymer of 4-methylpentene-1, the polymer having been prepared in the presence of a cationic catalyst such as AlCl3, is prepared by reacting the polymer with sulphuryl chloride or a mixture of sulphur dioxide and chlorine. The reaction is preferably in carbon tetrachloride using pyridine as catalyst. An elastomer may then be obtained by vulcanizing the chlorosulphonated polymer in the presence of an hydrogen chloride acceptor, e.g. lead, magnesium or zinc oxide, colophony or an epoxy compound. Vulcanization may be with metal oxide + sulphur accelerator, p-quinone dioxime with/without metal oxide + sulphur accelerator, sulphur curing systems, magnesia-pentaery-thritol, or sulphur-free metal oxide curing systems. In the examples, carbon black also is present.
