Abstract

FIELD: information technology. ^ SUBSTANCE: surface of a document is illuminated with at least one inclined radiation beam so that any raised material on the surface of the document reflects radiation. A surface with raised material is identified by at least one radiation detector. The image is then processed in order to determine the presence of raised material on the surface of the document. The illumination step causes reflection and/or a shadow formed by at least one edge of the raised material.
