Le procédé comporte les étapes suivantes : - déplacement d'un robot/porteur (33) jusque dans le tronçon d'orientation sensiblement verticale (15); - détermination de l'orientation du robot/porteur (33) autour d'un axe central (X) du tronçon d'orientation sensiblement verticale (15), en repérant l'orientation du champ magnétique terrestre. L'étape de détermination de l'orientation est réalisée à l'aide d'une boussole électronique (49) embarquée à bord du robot/porteur (33).
