Description
The invention relates to the field of transportation of hazardous materials. Nitrocellulose or cellulose nitrate is a chemical derived from cellulose (CAS No. 009004-70-0 and EC No. 603-037-01-3). It is currently classified for marine, land and air transport as a Class 4.1 hazardous material, ie flammable solids, self-reactive substances and desensitized explosives. The packaging and the transport of the nitrocellulose are thus problematic, because of its dangerousness. In addition, the apparent density of the product is relatively low and the nitrocellulose is sometimes packed in the barrels to increase the weight per package and thus reduce the cost of transportation and packaging. The product thus packed has a tendency to adhere to the walls and does not flow by gravity during the emptying of the packages. This emptying phase then requires a manual or mechanical extraction of the product. Since nitrocellulose is a solid product classified as flammable solid, this emptying operation, in addition to being impractical, is delicate in terms of safety. It is therefore necessary to improve the techniques used to transport hazardous materials that do not flow easily by gravity.
The packages currently used to transport nitrocellulose are small cardboard boxes of about 30 kg or kraft barrels of about 220 L comprising an inner polyethylene bag. Surprisingly, the Applicant has developed a method facilitating the emptying of nitrocellulose.
This package has several advantages: It allows to transport more nitrocellulose on a truck, It requires less human handling than the drums during the emptying, It allows to drain more easily with a flow of product called "free flowing" ( free flow, in English terminology), It is more easily recyclable than drums that include a metal strapping.
The financial gain can reach up to 10% of the price of the product. Therefore, a first object of the invention relates to a method of discharging a flocculent material stored in a package (1) comprising a container (2) of a rigid or semi-rigid material and a bag (3) self-supporting in one flexible material forming an inner envelope to the container not secured to the container, the container (2) having an upper part (4) with a filling opening, and the bag having a closed lower part (6) and an upper part (7) with a filling opening coinciding with the filling opening of the upper part (4) of the container (2), characterized in that it comprises the following steps: (a) attachment of lifting means to the upper part (7) bag (3) and lifting; (b) opening of the lower part (6) of the bag (3) suspended and flow of said flocculent material by gravity. Preferably, the flocculent material is a dangerous substance of class 4, particularly preferably it is nitrocellulose. The thickness of the flexible material of the bag (3) must be sufficient for it to be self-supporting. By self-supporting, it is understood that the bag is strong enough so that it can be suspended from its upper part (7) when it is completely filled, without the flexible material that constitutes it does not tear or even stretch. In this case, the flexible material of the bag (3) is preferably polypropylene or polyethylene but any other flexible plastic material is suitable. Advantageously, it has a thickness greater than 50 microns. The material of the container (2) is preferably the carton because it is easily recyclable and inexpensive but it can also be a rigid plastic material, especially HDPE (high density polyethylene). The bag (3) can be closed once filled by any type of means known to those skilled in the art, for example it can be sealed or closed by a surrounding link and tightening the upper end of the bag. A known connection consists of a plastic clamp. The container may be provided with handles (15). The bag (3) can be suspended by any lifting means, for example a hoist.
The bottom (6) of the bag (3) can be opened by tearing or cutting for example by a cutter. Advantageously, step (b) comprises a sub-step of lateral opening (5) of the container (2) before lifting.
Another subject of the invention relates to a package (1) intended for the transport of a flocculent material used in a process according to the first aspect of the invention, comprising a container (2) made of a rigid or semi-rigid material and a self-supporting bag (3) made of a flexible material forming an inner envelope of the container not fixed to the container, the container (2) having an upper part (4) with a filling opening, and the bag having a lower part (6) closed and an upper part (7) with a filling opening coinciding with the filling opening of the upper part (4) of the container (2). A third object of the invention relates to a method of transporting a flocculent material comprising steps of: (a) filling a package (1) according to the second aspect of the invention; (b) transporting said package (1); (c) discharging the flocculent material by a method according to the first aspect of the invention. Other features and advantages will emerge from the following embodiment and drawings. Figure 1 shows a packaging according to the invention in filling position. Figure 2 shows a packaging according to the invention in the transport position.
Figure 3 shows a package according to the invention at the beginning of the unloading process. Figure 4 shows a packaging according to the invention being lifted. Figure 5 shows a package according to the invention being emptied.
In Figure 1, there is shown a package (1) according to the invention in the open position for filling (step (a) of the transport method). It can contain from 60 to 180 kg depending on the hazardous material. This package (1) comprises a container (2) parallelepipedal cardboard size 540x540x1000 cm with a square section filler opening. This container (2) comprises on its upper part (4) a first flap (11) and a second flap (12). The two flaps are articulated around parallel and opposite axes so as to close the filling opening. Two other flaps (13) and (14) are arranged perpendicular to the first two and contribute to the closure.
Two of the four lateral faces of the container optionally comprise openings forming handles (15). A bag (3) of flexible plastic material is housed inside the container. It is not stuck to the walls. Before transporting it (second stage of the transport process), the bag (3) and the upper part (4) of the container (2) are closed. The flaps (11) and (12) are for example kept closed using an adhesive tape or glue, as shown in Figure 2. It is shown in Figure 3 packaging (1 ) at the beginning of the unloading of the material, that is to say at the beginning of step (a) of the unloading process according to the invention. The container (2) was opened in its upper part (4) at the flaps and the shutters of the container were folded. The bag (3) is suspended from a hoist (20) via conventional fastening means at its upper part (7), advantageously welded or closed by a link. The skilled person will adapt the invention to all kinds of winches and lifting means.
Figure 4 shows the package (1) during lifting. The bag (3) began to rise. Advantageously, the container (2) has been opened laterally at the intersection (5) of two faces to disengage the bag (3). We end up with a bag (3) "self-supporting" containing the material. Figure 5 shows the packaging (1) during emptying, that is to say during step (b) of the unloading method according to the invention. The bag (3) has been opened in its lower part (6) by a cutting tool, in particular a cutter.
The material flows on the ground (or in a receiving device (9) or on a vibrating screen) very easily. The own weight of the bag (3) suspended causes mechanical stresses which when released by the opening of the bag (3) allow a free flowing flow effect 5. The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown, it encompasses all variants within the reach of the skilled person.
