Abstract
Description
SECURED VEHICLE STRUCTURE [0001] The technical field of the invention relates to secure vehicle structures, designed to deform in case of impact with an external obstacle, without injuring the occupants of these vehicles. More specifically, the invention relates to a vehicle structure, whose deformation, under the effect of a lateral impact, is controlled, to prevent said structure from coming into contact with one of the occupants and not injured. The invention is particularly suitable for motor vehicles. For a better understanding of the invention, and a better visualization 10 of Figures 1 and 2, it should be noted that the X axis corresponds to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle, the Y axis to a transverse axis of said vehicle and the Z axis to a vertical axis. Vehicle structures able to deform under the effect of a side impact, exist and have already been the subject of patents. For example, US Pat. No. 5,338,273, which refers to a motor vehicle structure, having two middle legs, each having a ribbed body adapted to deform and cushion a lateral impact. These middle feet therefore have an exclusively damping function through a geometry intended to facilitate their deformation. [0004] The vehicle structures according to the invention are designed to safeguard the occupants in the event of an impact with an external obstacle, by having zones of controlled deformation, thus favoring particular directions of deformation, not oriented towards the occupants. The principle of the invention is not to dampen a shock by using suitable materials or geometries favorable to this function, but to channel a deformation to a given direction. The present invention relates to a secure vehicle structure, comprising 25 on each side, on either side of the longitudinal axis, at least one substantially vertical foot. The main characteristic of a vehicle structure according to the invention is that each side of said structure comprises at least one foot consisting of an elongated piece having, in the vicinity of one of its ends, a folding primer, adapted to favor a direction of deformation of said foot in case of impact on an external obstacle. Indeed, in case of side impact, a structural foot, which can generally be rear, middle or front, will naturally tend to bend at its central portion, in response to a side impact, with the consequence, a marked intrusion into the passenger compartment of the vehicle, which can reach a seated occupant of the vehicle. The object of the invention is to be able to trigger the deformation of the foot, in an eccentric zone thereof, to deflect the natural fold of said foot and prevent it from reaching an occupant. Preferably, the folding primer is located at a maximum distance from the end of the foot of which it is closest, which is less than one third of the total length of said foot. Indeed, the fold initiation is fully effective when it is located at the ends of the foot, in an area whose length is less than one third of the total length of the foot. For this configuration, the folding is done outside the occupant's field. Advantageously, the folding primer is located at a maximum distance from the end of the foot of which it is closest, which is less than one-tenth of the total length of said foot. The closer the fold primer is to the distal end of the foot, the more it will deflect the crease of the foot away from the occupant. Advantageously, the folding primer is located in the vicinity of the lower end of the foot. Generally, the vehicle structure legs are vertical, and the level of injuries, for a seated occupant in the vehicle, is less important in its folded legs than its head. It is therefore preferred a foot crease in the lower position, which could eventually reach the legs, rather than take the risk of bending the foot up, with a non-zero risk of impacting the head. Advantageously, the central foot on each side of the structure is provided with a folding primer. Indeed, the foot of a motor vehicle is the most dangerous vis-à-vis the occupants in case of side impact, because its uncontrolled fold could systematically reach the occupant placed in the vicinity of it. Preferably, the folding primer is constituted by a zone of lesser thickness. It is a surface area, well defined on the foot. According to another preferred embodiment of the invention, the folding primer is constituted by a pre-cut zone. For this embodiment, this zone is preferably elongated. According to another preferred embodiment of the invention, the folding primer is constituted by a local recess of the foot. For this embodiment, it is assumed that the foot comprises an internal cavity, and that a hole is made in a wall delimiting said cavity. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising a structure according to the invention. The vehicle structures according to the invention have the advantage of being secured vis-à-vis the occupants of it, while maintaining a constant footprint, since the feet benefit from local amenities, by removal of matter. In addition, they have the advantage of not causing major additional costs during the manufacture of vehicles, insofar as the structural modifications made to the feet are minor, and easy to implement. The following is a detailed description of a preferred embodiment of a tool according to the invention, with reference to FIGS. 1 to 5. FIG. 1 is a schematic front view, partially showing an occupant seated with his seat belt, and the intrusion of a middle foot of a vehicle structure of the state of the art, following a side impact - Figure 2 is a zoomed view of Figure 1 to 90 °, showing the contact of the deformed middle foot on the occupant. FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a central pillar belonging to a vehicle structure according to the invention. FIG. 4 is a zoomed view of a part of a central pillar belonging to a first preferred embodiment of a vehicle structure according to the invention. FIG. 5 is a zoomed view of a portion of a middle pillar belonging to a second preferred embodiment of a vehicle structure according to the invention. Referring to Figure 1, a motor vehicle structure belonging to the state of the art, has two middle feet 1, located on either side of its longitudinal axis, in approximately central position in the cabin. In the case of a side impact, with an obstacle outside the vehicle, the middle foot 1 tends to deform inwardly of said passenger compartment, folding in two. This intrusion into the passenger compartment, the middle foot and deformed, can cause said foot 1 to come into contact with an occupant 2 harnessed in his seat belt 3, and located vis-à-vis it, with as a result of the possibility of serious injury. FIG. 2 illustrates this aggression, showing the potential contact of a deformed central foot 1, following a side impact, with an occupant 2, the most advanced part 4 of said foot 1 possibly having a dangerous horizontal edge at of his fold.
As illustrated in FIG. 3, a central stand 1 belonging to a vehicle structure according to the invention has a folding primer 5. Indeed, typically, a foot 20 medium 1 is in the form of an elongate piece, located on the vehicle structure in a substantially vertical position, to distinguish a flared bottom end 6, and an upper end 7, the primer 5 more precisely, this primer 5 is placed at a maximum distance from the distal portion 8 of this foot 1, which is less than one third of the total length of the foot 1, and advantageously, at a maximum distance which is less than one-tenth of this total length.
With reference to FIG. 4, this folding primer, whose main function is to initiate the deformation of the foot 1 in a particular direction, may consist of a localized area 9 of smaller thickness. The dimensions of this zone can be relatively small, the main thing being to create a discontinuity of effort at the time of a side impact, to cause the folding of the foot 1. Similarly, its shape can take a plurality of profiles, as, for example, be square, rectangular, round or diamond. Referring to FIG. 5, another preferred embodiment of a vehicle structure according to the invention may involve breaking initiation on the basis of a local recess of the foot 1. In fact, the feet 1 medium are generally hollow, and have a cavity delimited by a wall, said recess 10 corresponding to a hole made in this wall. In the image of the embodiment described above, the dimensions and the shape of the hole 10 may be variable. In this way, in the case of a side impact with an obstacle outside the vehicle, the middle foot 1 of the vehicle structure according to the invention, will deform by folding at its lower end 6, leaving said foot 1 deformed out of reach of the occupant. The vehicle structures according to the invention thus make it possible to eliminate a certain number of potential sources of bodily injury for the occupants of said vehicle.
