Abstract

The device has flaps (4) movable between an open position, in which the flaps allow free circulation of air (A) between the flaps and towards a front face (10) of a cooling module (1), and a closed position in which the flaps are shut down and form a shield (E) opposing the circulation. The flaps are moved to the open position by a spring (6). The flaps are conformed such that the flaps are moved to the closed position under a single effect of displacement speed of the air, when pressure of the air applied on the flaps creates force greater than retaining force of the spring, and vice versa.

Description

The present invention relates to a device for obscuring a part of the front face of a cooling module of a vehicle engine. It also relates to a vehicle thus equipped.

On many motor vehicles currently in use, the front face thereof has two outside air intakes, one being located generally between the headlight optics and the second in the lower part or below the front bumper. These two inputs are dissociated essentially for reasons of aesthetics and air penetration coefficient, but both have the function of bringing fresh air to the front face of the engine cooling module. In certain vehicle configurations, there is observed, especially in the upper part of the front face of the cooling module, a vacuum phenomenon that results from a non-uniform flow of air from outside to said module. At high speed, this phenomenon is amplified, so that the air that enters the engine compartment and arrives at the lower part of the cooling module is "sucked" at the top and returned to the outside . This results in engine cooling problems. The state of the art in this field can be illustrated by the documents FR-A-2 603 065, DE-103 06 158 and DE-10 2004 026 419 in which it is proposed occultation means that will allow, according to their position, to prevent or allow the flow of an outside air flow towards the cooling module. In all these solutions, the means for passing the flaps from one position to the other are either motorized or dependent on the flow temperature of the coolant inside the cooling module. The present invention aims to provide an alternative to these solutions that dispenses with these motorized means (except in cases of extreme urgency), and which is implemented only at high speed of the vehicle. Thus, the present invention relates in particular to a device for obscuring a portion of the front face of a cooling module of a vehicle engine, which comprises a set of flaps, these flaps being movably mounted together, between an "open" position in which they let the air freely circulate between them and in the direction of said front face, and a "closed concealment" position in which the flaps are folded together and together form a screen which opposes the air circulation, these flaps being together recalled in the open position by elastic means, characterized in that said flaps are shaped such that they pass from said open position to said closed position, under the sole effect of the air displacement speed, as the air pressure applied to said flaps creates a force greater than the holding force of said elastic means, and vice versa. According to advantageous features of this device: said elastic means consist of at least one spring; said part of the front face is delimited by an enclosure whose front face is open and the bottom is materialized by said cooling module, said flaps being positioned in this enclosure; said part of the front face of the cooling module is the upper part thereof; it comprises motorized means able, upon request, to force said flaps to move them from said closed occultation position to the open position; said motorized means are triggered beyond a predetermined temperature detected inside said cooling module. Finally, the present invention relates to a motor vehicle provided with a concealment device according to one of the preceding claims.

Other features and advantages will become apparent upon reading the following description of an embodiment.

This description will be made with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a simplified side view and in vertical section of a device according to the invention, in a first open position 5 flaps; - Figure 2 is an analog to Figure 1, the flaps occupying a closed position of occultation; - Finally, Figure 3 is a view similar to the previous in which there are provided means that force the shutters in the open position in certain special conditions. In the accompanying figures is partially shown the cooling module 1 of a vehicle provided with a motor, for example internal combustion. This is its upper part. All of these figures refer to the letter C as the approximate location occupied by the calender, not shown, of this vehicle. The part of the end face 10 of the cooling module 1 that it is desired to conceal is referenced 100. Behind this cooling module, against its rear face 11, is mounted a fan 2 rotated by a motor 20, via a transmission axis 21. Said part 100 of the front face 10 of the cooling module is delimited here by an enclosure 3 whose front face 30 is open and whose bottom is embodied by the cooling module 1.

On a représenté ici trois volets. This enclosure is formed of two upper and lower walls 31 and 32, as well as two side walls, only one of which is visible in the figures. In this chamber is mounted a set of movable flaps, referenced 4. There are shown here three parts. Of course, this number could be different, preferably higher. These are identical flaps which are each attached to an associated horizontal axis of rotation 40. These axes are guided in rotation, by their ends, relative to the wall 30 and that which is parallel thereto. This set of flaps is moved by a linkage 5 which consists in particular of rods 50, one end of which is articulated on each of the flaps 4 about an axis 52, and on a bead 51 about axes 53, this rod 51 being common to the set of flaps 4. The rod 51 is itself secured in its lower part, an end of a compression spring 6 which is fixed at a fixed point 61, on the wall of the pregnant. The stiffness of the spring is provided so that, especially when the vehicle is stopped, the flaps always occupy the open position of FIG. 1. However, and according to the invention, these flaps are shaped so that they pass from this point. FIG. 2 shows the open position of FIG. 1, in that the air displacement speed A is limited by the fact that the air pressure which is applied to these flaps creates a sufficient force to counter the retaining force of the spring 6. In this case the flow of air in the enclosure is represented by the arrows f, g and h in Figure 1, so the air A entering through the opening of the front face 30 is routed and guided by the corridors that these flaps 4 constitute two by two. As the speed of the vehicle increases, the air pressure on these flaps proportionally increases and, from a predetermined speed (for example between 80 and 120 km / hour), this pressure is sufficient to rotate the set of shutters 4 so as to constitute an air occultation screen E, as shown in FIG. 2. The air flow A collides with the screen and is forced to turn around, as the 'indicate the arrows g'.

It will be noted that as soon as this air pressure falls, by reducing the speed of the vehicle, then the flaps return to their open position of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 represents a particular embodiment of the device in which means motorized means 7 can act on the rod 51 to return the flaps 4 in their open position of FIG. 1. These motorized means 7 are connected by an electric cable 70 to the motor-fan unit of the cooling module 1, as soon as an abnormal temperature is detected inside the latter, for example using a sensor. These motorized means are therefore only intended to render inoperative the occultation device, when overheating is noted in the cooling module 1. Note that the invention applies to any type of vehicle engine 5 and for any type cooling module, for example a radiator.
