Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a fastener comprising a plurality of floating nuts. A fastening element of this type is known from each of the two French patents 2 756 601 and 2 881 486 and comprises a support equipped with several floating nuts integral with the support while being movable in translation relative thereto to compensate for a possible misalignment of the support relative to a part on which this support is mounted.
According to the French patent 2,756,601, the floating nuts are held in a cage which results from a cutting and bending performed in the support itself to achieve pairs of pierced legs receiving ears of the nut inserted between two legs. According to the French patent 2 881 486, the cage consists of a U-shaped cross-section piece whose two fins are inserted between two tabs resulting from a cutting and bending performed in the support itself, these two wings being removably attached to the legs, each nut being retained floating in the cage by two opposite ears passing through the two corresponding fins of the cage. The use of this fastener to attach a first piece to a second piece is to first make several pairs of holes vis-à-vis each other in the first and second pieces. The fixing element is then permanently secured to the first part so that the support holes are substantially opposite the holes made in the first part. The fixing of the second part by itself is then carried out by engaging a screw in each floating nut, through the two holes made in the first and second parts and through the support, to tighten the screw so as to press the first piece against the second.
In the event of a defect in positioning the fastener relative to the holes made in the first and second parts, each floating nut is free to move in translation in X and Y with respect to the support to compensate for this positioning defect and to allow the engagement of the screws in the floating nuts. Such a fastener is used in particular in the aeronautics, to facilitate certain maintenance operations, allowing easy disassembly and reassembly of a part. The major disadvantage of these known fastening elements is related to the fact that the support tabs of the nuts to the support are made by cutting and folding made in the support itself, resulting in a relatively small number of floating nuts which can be mounted on the support because of the place occupied by the nut holding tabs in the support. This footprint aspect of the legs requires a support of appropriate size, then leading to an increase in weight of the fastener. The present invention aims to overcome the above drawbacks of known fasteners. To this end, the invention proposes a fastening element including a support consisting of a blank of metal or composite material comprising a plurality of caged nuts, mounted floating on the support blank and each maintained to this blank by at least one pair of parallel tabs forming part of the blank, perpendicular to the blank and receiving two opposite ears of the nut and which is characterized in that one of the two holding tabs of a nut is secured to an edge delimiting the blank of the support and results from a cutting and bending of an outer portion of the support and the other holding lug of this nut results from cutting and folding in the support itself.
The cage of the nuts is constituted by the two lugs having holes pierced by the two ears of the nut inserted between the two legs. According to another embodiment, each floating nut is retained in a floating manner in a cage having in cross section a U-shape whose two fins are inserted between the two legs being removably attached to these tabs. In this embodiment, two pairs of nut holding tabs are provided, the two legs of the same pair extending in the same plane and being separated from each other by a notch in which is engaged an ear of the nut through the corresponding wing of the cage.
Advantageously, each nut is capped with an anti-lightning cap or sealing. The invention will be better understood, and other objects, characteristics, details and advantages thereof will appear more clearly in the following explanatory description made with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings given solely by way of example illustrating several modes of Embodiment of the invention and in which: - Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a band-shaped support member according to a first embodiment of the invention; FIG. 2 is an overall perspective view of a circular band-shaped support fastening element according to a second embodiment of the invention; FIG. 3 is an overall perspective view of a circular band-shaped support element of the prior art; FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of a fastener element of a variant of the invention in which the support in the form of a circular band comprises caged nuts of different structures; - Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Figure 4 and showing other caged nuts of different structures; FIG. 6 is an overall perspective view of a fastener element according to another embodiment of the invention and whose support is in the form of a sinuous strip; and - Figure 7 is an overall perspective view of a fastener element according to another embodiment of the invention and whose support is generally plate-shaped. With reference to FIG. 1, reference numeral 1 denotes a fastening element comprising a support 2 which has the shape of a rectilinear strip with parallel edges extending in a longitudinal direction XX 'along which several caged nuts are distributed. 3 mounted floating X and Y relative to the support 2. Each floating nut caged 3 is of a structure similar to that of the floating caged nut described in French Patent 2,881,486. Thus, each nut 3 is housed in a cage 4 having in cross section a U-shape made by cutting and folding a sheet metal member and comprising a bottom wall 4a resting on the support strip 2 and two parallel fins 4b substantially perpendicular to the bottom wall 4a. Each fin 4b is extended by a corresponding tab 4c that can be manually gripped by a user to elastically bring the two wings together and disassemble the nut. Each fin comprises two lugs, not shown, projecting outwardly thereof and which can be engaged respectively in two holes 6a of a pair of lugs 6 integral with the support strip 2 perpendicularly thereto. Each fin comprises a substantially rectangular opening through which an ear 3a of the nut 3.
Each nut 3 is trapped between two pairs of legs 6, two legs 6 of the same pair being separated from each other, in their plane, by a notch 7. The two diametrically opposed ears of a nut 3 are engaged respectively in the two notches 7 of the two opposite parallel pairs of lugs 6. The assembly constituted by the nut 3 and the cage 4 is removably fixed between the two pairs of corresponding lugs 6 in order, if necessary, to replace a nut floating used 3 by a new nut. For more details on the structure of each mounted floating nut mounted on the support 2, it is sufficient to refer to the French patent 2 881 486. According to the invention, the two legs 6 of the same pair are integral with the corresponding edge of the support strip 2 thus extending along this edge in a plane parallel to the longitudinal direction XX 'of the support strip 2 and the two pairs of tabs 6 trapping a caged nut 3 are symmetrical relative to the axis XX '. Each pair of legs 6 is obtained by cutting and then folding an outer portion of the support strip 2. By providing a series or succession of pairs of legs 6 along the two respective edges of the support strip 2, it is possible to vary the pitch of the nuts from the longitudinal direction XX 'and in particular to reduce this step as much as possible so as to integrate a maximum of nuts along the support strip 2. In addition, this arrangement of pairs of tabs 6 significantly reduces the weight of the fastener relative to the weight of each known fastener in which the floating nut holding tabs are made by cutting and then folding in the carrier blank itself, then requiring a support of larger dimension. The weight reduction of a fastener of the invention relative to a known fastener may be from about 15 to 30%. Figures 2 and 4 show a fastening element 1, the support strip 2 is circular. According to this fastening element, each floating nut 3 is of the type described in French Patent No. 2,756,601 in which the cage of each nut 3 is constituted by two parallel opposite tabs 6 extending perpendicularly to the support strip 2 and comprising two holes 6b in which are engaged respectively the two opposite ears 3a of the nut 3 to allow the latter to float relative to the support strip 2 in two perpendicular directions. The two tabs 6 between which is immovably immovable a nut 6 are secured respectively to the two parallel edges of the circular band 2 and are arranged symmetrically to the circumferential direction XX 'of the strip 2. Each pair of legs 6 is made by cutting then folding of external portions of the support strip 2. The successive pairs of tabs 6 may be arranged along the circumferential direction XX 'of the strip 2 according to the nut spacings 3 with variable pitch and, in any case, at not being able to be reduced as much as possible in order to integrate a maximum of encaged nuts 6 in this circumferential direction. A comparison between the fixing element of FIG. 2 and the prior art fastening element of FIG. 3, where the caged nuts are fixed to the circular band 2 by rivets, shows the space saving and integration of floating caged nuts 3 of the fixing element of the invention and the removal of the metal cage 4 which serves to support the nut 3. FIG. 4 shows that the successive pairs of legs 6 can trap floating way of the nuts 6 of different types, for example a standard floating nut, a floating nut and a nut provided with a lightning or sealing cap 8, known per se, and may be made of metal, composite material or other, fixed integrally to the body of the nut. FIG. 5 represents an alternative embodiment of the fastener element 1 in the form of a circular band 2 comprising a plurality of caged nuts each mounted floating between two pairs of tabs 6 as in FIG.
FIG. 5 further shows that the pairs of tabs 6 can trap floating nuts of different types with each other as in FIG. 4. FIG. 6 represents another embodiment in which the fastening element 1 is in the form of a sinuous strip 2 having a plurality of caged and floating nuts 3 of the type of Figure 1 and evenly distributed along this band. Of course, the nuts 3 can be mounted caged and floating in the manner shown in Figure 2 and the caged nuts distributed along the sinuous strip may be different from each other as shown in Figure 4. Figure 7 shows a method of embodiment according to which the support 2 is constituted by a blank of any shape delimited by a plurality of straight edges and having a plurality of caged and floating nuts 3 of the type shown in FIG. 1. As shown, two lugs 6 of one of the two pairs of tabs 6 between which is trapped floating a nut 3, are integral with a corresponding edge of the blank 2 extending perpendicularly to the blank 2 and the other two legs are derived from cutting and bending performed in the blank itself 2 of the support 1 as described in French Patent 2,880,486. This embodiment makes it possible to install nuts caged and floating on the blank of upport 2 in a remote way, while keeping the possibility of setting up a maximum of caged nuts. Whatever the embodiments described above, the strip 2 of the support 1 may be made of metal, such as a titanium alloy, an aluminum alloy or a composite material and each nut 3 may be made of steel, a stainless steel alloy, an aluminum alloy, a nickel-based alloy or a titanium alloy, or a composite material.
The fastener of the invention has the following advantages. - The spacings between successive caged nuts can be reduced and optimized, which makes it possible to propose a technical solution to locations where it was impossible to mount nuts in cages; the encirclement of the caged nut support strip is optimized to the maximum width, which makes it possible to propose technical solutions for applications where it was impossible to use a standard type of nut support strip as represented in FIG. Figure 3; the mass of the fixing element is minimized; the support strip of the caged nuts may be made of a more or less flexible material, making it possible to compensate for surface defects when the fastener element is to be installed on non-flat profiles; several types of nuts can be mounted on the same support strip; the mounting with axles of offset nuts on the support blank can be realized whereas previously it was necessary to provide a support blank of nuts riveted on it, going to the detriment of the weight of the assembly; - The caged and floating nuts mounted on the support strip can be replaceable or not; the support of the caged nuts requires less machining and no creeping unlike the caged nut supports of the prior art; the mounting time of the support member is optimized and requires the use of a smaller number of fastening rivets of the element to a workpiece; - The management of the components of the fastener is simplified.
