Description
SYSTEME D'ANTENNE HF
The present invention relates to an HF antenna system operating in the so-called High Frequency or HF frequency band, ranging from 2 to 30 MHz, and intended in particular to be installed on military land vehicles to allow radio links either by ground waves, either by propagation channels using an almost vertical reflection on the ionosphere better known to those skilled in the art under the name NVIS, abbreviation of the terms Near Vertical Incidence Skywave according to English terminology.
The HF antenna systems commonly used on land vehicles and widely distributed are made with an antenna
HF type whip antenna associated with a tuning box. The whip antenna type is also known by the name "whip" according to English terminology. The tuning box is also known by the name ATU abbreviation of the terms Antenna Tuning Unit according to English terminology. The tuning box ensures the impedance adaptation of the whip antenna used to a transmitter / receiver station.
Two categories of whip antenna are usually used: a category of short whip antenna, from 4 to 5 meters, for use on moving vehicles and a category of long whip antenna, from 7.5 to 10 meters, for uses on a stationary or fixed support. In order to allow vehicles equipped with a short whip antenna to use the road network, it is customary to stay this whip antenna so that the overall height of the vehicle does not exceed the road gauge. FIG. 1 (a) represents an HF antenna system comprising an antenna 1 of the guyed whip antenna type on a vehicle 2 according to a known arrangement. The HF antenna system comprises a whip antenna 1, a guying system 3, a tuning box 4, a radio transmitter / receiver 5 and a feed-through base 6. The whip antenna 1 ends at a first end 7 held in the bushing base 6 and a second end 8. The guying system 3 is constituted by two insulating halyards.
The bushing base 6 provides mechanical support for the whip antenna 1 on the vehicle 2. An electrical connection wire 9 passes through the vehicle body 2 and connects the first end 7 of the whip antenna 1 to the box agree 4. The second end 8 of the whip antenna is left free for this type of antenna. As a first approximation, the equivalent electrical diagram of such an HF antenna system is shown in Figure 1 (b). In this representation the antenna 1 of the whip antenna type is assimilated to a vertical monopoly and the vehicle is simulated by a ground plane 10. According to this approximation, the HF antenna system has a well known radiation pattern 11 which has a zero at the vertical 12 of the antenna 1 and a maximum at the horizontal 13. This peculiarity of the radiation diagram makes it possible to make a radio link from 0 up to about 50 km by ground waves and beyond about 100 km by reflection on the ionosphere. The area between 50 km and 100 km, for which it is very difficult to establish a radio link with this type of antenna, is well known to those skilled in the art under the name shadow area or skip area following Anglo-Saxon terminology.
To avoid this shadow zone phenomenon and ensure a continuous link from 0 to several hundred kilometers, it is known to use other types of HF antenna systems which do not have a vertical draw so that the radio link can be established through the NVIS type ionospheric reflection channel. One of the HF antenna systems which meets this requirement and which is capable of being installed on a vehicle comprises a half-loop antenna whose principle of implementation commonly used is widely described in the literature; for example in the book Antenna Enginneering Handbook by H. JASIK-
McGraw-Hill Book Company-edition 1/1961-page 27-28 in Figure 27-32 (b) and more recently included in patents FR 2 553 586 and EP 0 691 738 AI by STAREC. The principle of implementation of an HF antenna system with a half-loop antenna is shown in FIG. 2. An HF antenna system with a half-loop antenna consists essentially of a radiating element 14, a excitation element 15, with a variable tuning capacity 16, a ground plane 10 and a radio transmitter / receiver 5. The radiating element 14 is equipped with a socket 17. The element radiating 14 defines with the ground plane 10 a radiation surface S 100. The excitation element 15 connects the socket 17 to the radio transmitter / receiver 5. The variable tuning capacity 16 is placed in series with the element radiating 14 and is intended to tune the antenna in the useful frequency band. The approximate radiation diagram in the plane of the figure of this HF antenna system is shown diagrammatically by a curve 18. Such an HF antenna system with half-loop antenna, the patents of which previously cited describe particular embodiments, presents several disadvantages listed below. A first drawback comes from the means of tuning the antenna which consists in varying only the value of the variable tuning capacity. Such a means does not make it possible to cover a wide frequency band except for implementing complicated and expensive devices which are the subject of the patent FR 2 553 586 cited previously. A second drawback comes from a constraint imposed on the radiation surface S. The radiation surface S must be limited in size so that the adaptation in the HF band can be carried out only by variation of the variable tuning capacitance. But the radiation resistance of this type of antenna is proportional to the square of the radiation surface S. Thus a low value of radiation surface S necessarily implies a very low value of radiation resistance and therefore a great disposition to ohmic losses and high selectivity. The drawbacks previously exposed impose constraints during the manufacture of such an HF antenna system. These constraints are described below. The manufacture of the radiating element requires the use of hollow metal profiles of very large section in order to reduce the ohmic losses. This constraint is impractical for an installation of the HF antenna system on a vehicle. The high selectivity requires the use of a system of variable capacity which can withstand high overvoltages and of a very expensive servo system; such a variable capacity system is the subject of patent FR 2,553,586. Automatic tuning of the antenna requires the development of a specific algorithm, for example that proposed in patent EP 0 691 738 AI. Such an algorithm controls the servo system which performs the variation of the value of the variable tuning capacity.
The object of the present invention is to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks. To this end, the invention relates to an HF antenna system according to claim 1.
The invention offers in particular the possibility of transforming an HF antenna system whose radiating element is a standard antenna of the whip antenna type associated with a standard tuning box into an HF antenna system whose radiation is perfectly suited to an NVIS type ionospheric reflection link. The whip antenna type radiating element and the standard tuning box are usually fitted to military vehicles fitted with HF radiocommunication means. The invention overcomes the use of a specific antenna and the development of an algorithm for controlling an impedance matching system adapted to this antenna. Another advantage of an HF antenna system according to the invention, compared to known HF antenna systems with half-loop antenna, is its ability to be tuned in the entire HF band from 2 to 30 MHz. From an integration point of view on a vehicle, an HF antenna system according to the invention does not require any specific arrangement as for the HF antenna systems which are the subject of the cited patents; its installation on a vehicle can be done directly on locations initially planned for standard whip antennas.

An HF antenna system according to the invention installed on a vehicle is shown in Figure 3 (a). The HF antenna system includes a radiating element 1, a tuning box 4, a radio transmitter / receiver 5, a feed-through base 6, a ground plane 10, a variable capacity 20 and a step-up broadband transformer d impedance 21.
The radiating element 1 is a filiform conducting element having a certain flexibility, in the example an antenna of the whip antenna type. The whip antenna 1 has a first end 7 held in a bushing base 6 and a second end 8.
The flexibility properties of the filiform conductive element make it possible to bend it between its two ends above the ground plane 10.
The whip antenna 1 and the crossing base 6 usually equip any military vehicle having HF radiocommunication means
The whip antenna 1 is used to delimit with the ground plane 10 a radiation surface S 200 of a radiating element of the half-loop antenna type.
Vehicle 2 is of the all-terrain car type, for example. The vehicle 2 comprises a body made with sheets. The sheets produce the ground plane 10 of the HF antenna system, the quality of which partly depends on the assembly of the sheets together. When the bodywork does not include any sheet metal, the vehicle 2 can be equipped with a ground plane produced by the addition of a conductive tape (of the ground braid, wire mesh or metal strip type (copper strip), for example ) installed on vehicle 2. This addition can also be carried out when the quality of the ground plane produced by the sheets is deemed to be insufficient.
Chord box 4 is a standard chord box. A standard tuning box is part of the usual equipment of an HF radiocommunication system and is initially designed to tune whip antenna type antennas.
The radio transmitter / receiver 5 is a standard radio transmitter / receiver.
The wideband impedance step-up transformer 21 comprises, in a protective housing 22, a primary 23, a secondary 24 and a magnetic circuit 25. The wide-band impedance step-up transformer can be produced according to the following example: 5 turns 24 of AWG12 gauge Teflon insulating wiring wire wound on 2 tori 25 of ferrite size 36/23/13 made of material 4C65 from the RTC firm to constitute the secondary, a copper rod 23 which passes through the two tori constitute the primary.
An electrical connection wire 26 connects one of the two terminals of the variable capacity 20 to the first end 7 of the whip antenna 1 through the bushing base 6. The other terminal of the variable capacity 20 is connected to the plane of ground 10. In the case of the known use of a whip antenna 1, illustrated by FIG. 1 (a), an electrical connection wire 9 connects the first end 7 of the whip antenna 1 to a tuning box 4, through the bushing base 6. According to the prior art illustrated in FIG. 2, a variable tuning capacity 16 alone ensures the adaptation of the radiating element 14 to the working frequency. The variable capacity 20 of the HF antenna system according to the invention is only used to make the impedance presented by the radiating element of the half-loop antenna type capacitive. The variable capacity 20 as well as control devices thereof, not shown to simplify the presentation, are protected by a housing 27.
The second end 8 of the whip antenna 1 is connected to the primary 23 of the wideband impedance boosting transformer 21. The secondary 24 of the wideband impedance boosting transformer 21 is connected at a first point 28 to a first end of the core of a coaxial cable 29. The second end of the core of the coaxial cable 29 is connected at a second point 30 to the standard tuning box 4. The primary 23, the secondary 24 and the braid of the coaxial cable 29 have a common ground connection 31 which is connected to the ground plane 10. The coaxial cable 29 is preferably a cable with a characteristic impedance of approximately 100 ohms, for example RG-62.
L'impédance vue entre la seconde extrémité 8 de l'élément rayonnant 1 et le plan de masse 10 est transformée par le transformateur large bande élévateur d'impédance 21.An equivalent electrical diagram of an HF antenna system according to the invention is shown in Figure 3 (b). The radiating element 1 defines with the ground plane 10 a radiation surface 200. The variable capacitance 20 is used to make the impedance seen between the second end 8 of the radiating element 1 and the ground plane 10 at the capacitive operating frequency, whatever the size of the radiation surface 200. Therefore, the value of the variable capacitance in an HF antenna system according to the invention is not as critical as in an HF antenna system of the half-loop antenna type according to the prior art; the same is true for the size of the radiation surface. These advantages make it possible to install an antenna system
HF according to the invention on almost all land vehicles without major mechanical modifications. The impedance seen between the second end 8 of the radiating element 1 and the ground plane 10 is transformed by the wideband transformer impedance raising 21.
Le transformateur large bande élévateur d'impédance 21 est dimensionné en fonction de l'impédance qu'il doit ramener au secondaire 24.The wideband step-up impedance transformer 21 is dimensioned as a function of the impedance which it must reduce to the secondary 24.
The impedance seen in secondary 24 is determined in such a way that it is in a zone tunable by the standard tuning box 4 throughout the HF frequency band of operation of the HF antenna system.
A variant of an embodiment of an antenna system
