Description

The present invention relates to a rotary joint and, more specifically, a rotary joint for an electrical appliance. This rotating joint is able to securely hold the electrical cable and prevent it from appearing to view, thus giving the device a pleasant aesthetic appearance.
The classic desk lamp basically consists of a base, a support leg and a lamp housing. In most cases, the support leg of the desk lamp consists of two support tubes which are connected by a rotating joint, as shown in fig. 4. Thanks to this arrangement, the user can adjust the luminous flux towards the place he wishes to illuminate. To supply the lamp with current, a power cord is installed in these support tubes. Particular care must be taken when projecting to prevent the power cord from being damaged by the rotating joint which is constantly rotating. From what is shown in fig. 4, the conventional rotary joint comprises a central element and two lateral elements. These two lateral elements are pivotally mounted on the central element and can rotate relative to the central element. The central passage of these two lateral elements is in communication with the passage of the central element. By this arrangement, the positive and negative wires can be guided separately in these two support tubes from the central element. Admittedly, this device achieves the intended goal, but the manufacturing cost is high and it is difficult to assemble these three elements. In addition, this type of joint has a poor structure which easily takes play after a certain period of use.
The rotary joint produced according to the present invention comprises a first support tube and a second support tube. At one end, said first support tube is secured to a first hub member and, at one end, said second support tube is secured to a second hub member, said first and second hub members having the same diameter. Internally, said first and second hub elements are both in communication with said first and second support tubes. Said first hub element further comprises a first shaft which extends axially over a certain distance. This shaft has a central bore and a hole drilled in said hub member. Said second hub member comprises a second shaft which extends axially over a certain distance. This second shaft has a tapped central hole. The outside diameter of said second shaft is equal to the inside diameter of the bore of said first shaft. Said second shaft can be inserted into and rotate relative to said first shaft. A screw can be inserted into said hole of said first hub member and be screwed into said threaded hole of said second shaft. By this arrangement, the first and second support tubes are assembled without play and can rotate relative to each other. The power cord can easily pass through the central passage of these support tubes and through the hub elements, without jamming or tension.
The objects and other advantages of the present invention will become more clearly apparent on examining the description of a preferred embodiment and the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of a rotary joint produced according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, in the assembled state, of the rotary joint produced according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 is another sectional view, taken along line AA of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a schematic view of a conventional rotary joint.
To refer to the figures and in particular to fig. 1, a rotary joint produced according to the present invention comprises a first support tube 21 and a second support tube 11. Said first support tube 21 is integral, at one end, with a first hub element 22 and said second tube support 11 is secured at one end to a second hub member 12, said first and second hub members 22, 12 having the same diameter. Internally, said first and second hub elements 22, 12 are both in communication with said first and second support tubes 21, 11. Said first hub element 22 further comprises a first shaft 24 which s extends axially over a certain distance. This shaft 24 has a central bore 241 and a hole 242 drilled in said hub element 22. Said second hub element 12 comprises a second shaft 14 which extends axially over a certain distance. This second shaft 14 has a central hole 141 tapped from one end to the other. The outside diameter of said second shaft 14 is equal to the inside diameter of the bore of said first shaft 24. Thus, said second shaft 14 can be inserted into said first shaft 24 and rotate with respect thereto. A screw 3 can be inserted into said hole 242 of said first hub member 22 and be screwed into said tapped hole 141 of said second shaft 14. By this arrangement, the first and second support tubes 2, 1 are assembled without play and can rotate relative to each other. As the interior space 23 of said first hub member 22 is in communication with the central passage 210 of said first support tube 21 and as the interior space 13 of said second hub member 12 is in communication with the central passage 110 of said second support tube 11, the supply cord can easily pass through the central passage 210, 110 of these support tubes 21, 11 and through the hub elements 22, 12, without jamming neither tension.
Preferably, the thickness of the elements forming the hub 11 and 21 is equal to half the diameter of the tubes 1 and 2. The two parts of the rotary joint, that is to say the two elements 11 and 21 and the tubes 1 and 2 which are respectively associated with them, can advantageously be made of a thermoplastic material.
We can see in fig. 2 and 3 how the first and second support tubes 21, 11 are assembled by the screw 3. The power cord can easily pass through the passages formed in said support tubes 21, 11 and in the hub elements 22, 12 Whatever the angle of rotation, the power cord is protected from twisting or blockage by the elements forming the hub. Thus, the invention provides a very reliable rotary joint for electrical devices such as gooseneck lamps or the like.
The present invention has been described in connection with its preferred embodiment, but many variants and modifications will come to the mind of those skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the invention. It is therefore understood that the present invention is not limited by the present particular description.
