Abstract
Description
PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF DE DECONTAMINATION
D'OBJETS METALLIQUES.DECONTAMINATION PROCESS AND DEVICE
METALLIC OBJECTS.
The subject of the present invention is a process for decontamination and destruction of metallic objects liable to be contaminated by microbial or viral strains, as well as a device for implementing said process.
We know that in human or veterinary hospitals it is essential to decontaminate objects that may have been in contact with blood, pus, excrement or any other contaminant, these objects being likely to cause an infection of the personnel called to handle them. directly or indirectly.
Cases of contamination, fatal in the event of AIDS or of described hepatitis, have been described either among the hospital staff called upon to handle these objects, or among the staff who is called upon to handle collective garbage which may contain needles, syringes , scalpel blades, various probes having been in contact with patients carrying microbial or viral infections. The objects which can cause such an attack are sharp objects which risk inadvertently causing injury to personnel, this injury constituting an entry route for microbes or viruses. These objects are at least partly metallic and of small dimensions such as needles or scalpel blades.
Previously, such objects were, after use, sterilized in an oven at 18000 for a given time. Such a rise in temperature thus made it possible to eliminate microbes and viruses. However, single-use needles, scalpels, probes, etc. are currently used in order to avoid contamination between patients and they are no longer re-sterilized. But, there is a problem of destruction of these objects which must in no case be disseminated in nature. To this end, it is currently known to place the objects used in plastic boxes which, for the safety reasons stated above, must not be thrown away with collective garbage. Such objects represent a considerable volume of waste for a healthcare establishment, counting several bites per person per day. Plastic boxes must be brought either to the central incinerator of the establishment, or to a collective incinerator which can be far from the health center, which results in an additional cost. The object of the present invention is to overcome this drawback and to make available to the care units, a device for decontaminating objects making it possible to destroy the contaminants, the residue being able to be removed with ordinary waste without any danger.
According to the present invention, the method of decontamination and destruction of metallic objects which can be contaminated and characterized in that it consists in subjecting the object to laser bombardment.
Thus, the object such as a needle or a scalpel blade is subjected to very rapid heating which at least causes its partial fusion and of course destroys all the microbial or viral strains.
The present invention also relates to a device for implementing the method comprising a thermally and electrically isolated enclosure, containing a laser source disposed above a cavity capable of receiving a drawer containing the objects to be destroyed.
It is thus possible after use to directly collect dangerous objects in the drawer which can be placed on a trolley and then to introduce the drawer into the enclosure to start the laser bombardment.
After use, the possibly contaminated object can be placed directly inside the drawer and brought to the destruction-decontamination device.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will appear during the following description of a particular embodiment given solely by way of nonlimiting examples with reference to the figures which represent - FIG. 1, a schematic view of a device
decontamination - Figure 2, a perspective view of the drawer.
In Figure 1, we see that inside a chamber 1 which is preferably thermally and electrically isolated is mounted a laser source 2. The laser source 2 is controlled from a table 9 acting on the power supply 5 of the laser.
Of course, the power supply 5 is connected to the mains and includes all the usual security devices.
The enclosure 1 has on its front face and at the lower part thereof an opening 3 allowing the introduction of a drawer 4 making it possible to bring the objects below the laser beam F.
The drawer 4 is shown in perspective in Figure 2. It generally has a rectangular crucible shape. To this end, it has four inclined walls 7 forming a funnel so that an object inserted on one of the sides slides automatically into the bottom 10 of the drawer. The inclined walls 7 extend towards the bottom 10 of the drawer by very inclined surfaces 8. According to a characteristic of the invention, the walls 7 and 8 are walls reflecting at the emission wavelength of the laser source 2. Thus, the laser radiation is not absorbed by these walls and consequently does not cause no noticeable heating of these. However, the mirrors 7 and 8 constitute only a coating of the body of the drawer which is advantageously made of refractory material in order to avoid any dissipation of heat.
In the course of experiments which have been carried out, satisfactory results have been obtained with a YAG laser, the active element of which is a double garnet of aluminum and yttrium, the emission power of which was 30 watts and the length d wave of 1,065 mm. It was observed that the sharp parts (tips of the needle, scalpel blades) vaporized to form microbeads. In any case, the sharp instruments introduced into the device are blunt and unsuitable for any subsequent use. The laser operating time was two to three seconds.
Of course, the operation of the system proper requires a few precautions and, in addition to the conventional safety devices, there is preferably added inside the enclosure 1 a limit switch 6 which can only be closed when the drawer 4 is pushed. fully inside the cavity 3. And thus, the device can only be put into operation when the drawer is in place. The laser emits no smoke and no radiation harmful to the environment.
It is possible to have drawers on the carts for caring for the sick and to put the needles directly in then arrive in the nurses' room to pass the needles in the device before throwing said needles with normal garbage.
The present invention thus makes it possible to limit as much as possible the handling of soiled objects and consequently the risks of contamination. The manipulations being reduced to a minimum, there is a saving of time and personnel which quickly compensates for the investment of purchase of the device.
It goes without saying that many variants can be introduced, in particular by substitution of technically equivalent means without departing from the scope of the invention.
