Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a material having a high thermal breaking power.
One of the aims of the present invention is to produce a material which, during a determined period of time, can protect a room, an apparatus, a device, a product against an abnormally large temperature rise.
The material according to the invention consists of two plies of knitted fabric formed from a yarn formed from a first synthetic material having high mechanical strength and a high reflectivity in the infrared and of a second non-flammable material, thermally stabilized and having a significant infrared reflecting power, these materials being cracked, spun and knitted, said two plies being impregnated with a resin suitably added with its catalyst, said plies being fixed by their edge in order to delimit a sealed volume between them in which are inserted at least two metal sheets having a high reflection factor in the infrared, and a third layer of fabric corresponding to that of the first two layers, housed between the two metal sheets, this so-called third tablecloth being saturated with a vaporizable substance. Such a knitted fabric is described in particular in French patent application No. 89 15 327 of November 22, 1989 in the names of the applicants and uses more particularly aramid fibers known under the name "KEVLAR" and preoxidized fibers known under the name of "Sigrafil O.
Thanks to this material, it is possible to protect for a certain period of time a room, a device, an object or a product against a heat attack. In fact, if one side of the material is subjected to intense heat, the metal sheets act as a reflecting screen, while the saturation product of the third layer vaporizes, thus producing an endothermic reaction.
Of course, beyond a certain period of time, the material is destroyed, but according to the numerous tests carried out, its resistance to very high temperatures is far much higher than that of known materials.
Depending on the targeted results, it is possible to provide, in the space delimited by the first two layers, a more or less significant stacking of metal sheets and of three third layers saturated with a vaporizable substance.
Preferably, the material is arranged so as to allow the evacuation of the vapor when at least one face is subjected to the action of heat above a determined threshold and beyond a lapse of time. of determined time.
Thus, condensation phenomena are avoided which would reduce the efficiency of the material according to the invention.
According to a particular embodiment, the resin impregnating the two plies is chosen so that the material remains flexible.
According to another embodiment, the resin impregnating the two plies is chosen so that the material is rigid. Thus, it is possible to produce with the material according to the invention, objects having various shapes, cases, boxes, etc., these being able to be molded according to the known technique.
Preferably, the resin is a non-flammable resin such as silicone elastomers.
According to yet another characteristic, the resin consists of ceramic powders added with a binder.
Preferably, the third layer is saturated with water.
According to a particular characteristic, the threads constituting the third ply receive a size to facilitate knitting, said size being maintained.
Thus, a material is produced having two vaporization thresholds for the third layer.
Preferably, the metal sheets are made of polished aluminum.
The invention also relates to objects made with the material as defined above.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to particular embodiments given by way of example only and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of a material according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of a material according to the invention, according to an alternative embodiment.
Figure 3 shows an application of the material according to the invention.
Figure 4 shows the temperature curve obtained with the material of Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows in section a container made with the material according to the invention.
The material according to the invention, and shown in Figure 1 comprises three plies 1, 2 and 3 of a knitted fabric made from a yarn formed, on the one hand, of a first synthetic material which has a high mechanical resistance and high reflecting power and, on the other hand, a second non-flammable material, thermally stabilized and having a high reflecting power, the first material being an aramid yarn and the second a preoxidized yarn, these yarns having underwent a spinning cracking process before knitting.
The sheet 1 is coated with a non-flammable silicone elastomer 4 such as commercial polymers which polymerize by the introduction of a catalyst.
The sheet 3 is also coated with a silicone elastomer 4.
The threads of the ply 2 prior to knitting receive a size which makes it easier, in this embodiment this size is kept and the ply 2 is saturated with water.
Between the sheet 2 and the sheet 1 is inserted a thin metal sheet 5, for example polished aluminum, the two faces of which have been treated by oxidation, so that said sheet has a high reflection factor in the infrared.
A metal sheet 6 is inserted between the sheets 2 and 3, the latter being of the same type as the sheet 5.
The ends of the plies 1 and 3 are welded glued so that the assembly forms a composite material.
The various elements constituting the material are free from each other in order to provide spaces in which a certain amount of air is maintained.
A flexible material is thus produced which makes it possible to protect, during a determined period of time, an apparatus, a product or the like against an abnormal rise in temperature.
The endothermic loads, water and size, for example, contained between the fibers constituting the sheet 2 see their temperature rise when one of the sheets 1 or 3 is heated.
If the thermal stress continues, the charges reach their boiling point. Thermodynamically, any transition from the liquid phase to the vapor phase absorbs a certain amount of heat. The transformation of the liquid into gas takes place at the surface of the liquid and a liquid vapor equilibrium pressure is established at a temperature considered so that the temperature at the liquid vapor interface is constant as long as the equilibrium pressure maintains. The material makes it possible to create optimal conditions so that the vapor phase is of a maximum duration for the intermediate sheet 2. If the temperature to which the material is subjected exceeds a certain threshold, it occurs in the sheet 1 or 3 subjected to the heat of the cracks which allow the vapor to escape and thus avoid a certain condensation which would affect the effectiveness of the material.
In FIG. 1, there is shown a simplified embodiment aiming at the manufacture of a flexible material, it is possible to increase the qualities of the material to increase the number of sheets 2 and the number of metal sheets 5 and 6.
Figure 2 shows an exemplary embodiment for the manufacture of a rigid material. The material shown in Figure 2 comprises a first sheet of a fabric 10 of the same type as the fabric 1 coated with a resin becoming rigid after polymerization, for example, this resin consisting of ceramic powders added with a binder.
To form the second face of the material, a second sheet of fabric 11 is used which is of the same type as the fabric of the sheet 10 and which is impregnated with the same resin.
The sheets 10 and 11 are fixed along their edge by gluing, welding or the like so as to delimit between them a sealed volume, in this volume being inserted a series of sheets 15 of the fabric corresponding to that of the sheets 10 and 11, and between each pair of neighboring plies 15 is inserted a thin metal sheet 14, for example, of aluminum.
Each layer 15 is saturated with water and the size used at the time of knitting is preserved.
The material can be molded by any suitable method to present a desired shape.
In Figure 3, there is thus shown the material of Figure 2 suitably molded to have a bowl shape 17 with a rim 18, this bowl being interposed between two volumes VI and V2.
The material comprises, in this embodiment ten plies 15 and eleven metal sheets 14, the rim 18 being fixed in a sealed manner on a support 19 separating the two volumes VI and V2. On the face of the bowl 17 facing the volume VI, a thermal stress was applied whose temperature # was maintained at 1050 0C. + 600C with a power of 1300 Watts for about thirty minutes (see curve a in figure 8).
As can be seen on curve f in Figure 4 for a short time (phase I) the temperature of the protected face of the wall reached 1000C, then it stabilized at this temperature (phase 2) which corresponds to the vaporization of the water contained in the layers 15, then the temperature has risen to a temperature of the order of 1700C corresponding to the vaporization temperature of the sizing product contained in the layers 15.
The curves of FIG. 4 thus make it possible to note that it is possible, during a period of time of approximately thirty minutes, to protect in a very effective way a device or a product disposed in the volume V2, while the volume V1 is subjected to intense heating.
During the tests, it was found that the face of the bowl 18 facing the volume VI had cracks which allow the steam to escape and thus avoid any phase of condensation which would considerably reduce the efficiency of the material.
If the organ to be protected risks being subjected to very high temperatures, it is of course possible to increase the number of sheets 15 and the number of sheets 14.
If on the contrary, the temperature is not likely to reach such thresholds, the sheets 15 can be impregnated with a substance whose vaporization temperature is lower than that of water.
In Figure 5, there is shown a container 20 made with the material according to the invention and which can constitute a packaging for dangerous products. It is thus possible to produce various objects, for example, boxes for electrical installation, insulation panels for the building, etc.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments which have just been described and shown. Many detailed modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
