Abstract

The device comprises means which are exposed on the rebate side (sections 1, 2, etc., with or without a membrane 6) and on the hinge side (3, 4), the whole making up a flexible element which is inserted between the fixed frame (D) and the opening leaf (O). Once it has been slid on to the doorway or window opening, this joint gradually opens out into a fan shape, automatically holds itself in place and fits most existing door or window frames, without any modifications thereto. It may also prove to be very economical since the use of other devices may not be required. This device can combine various functions, acting as: - safety device, sealing device, device for recalling the door or window and hinge.

When closing a door, for example, the fingers of an inattentive or careless person may be pinched in the doorway.

 The subject of the invention is a protective element intended to be inserted between the frame and the leaf of a door, window-frame, window or other window frames, more particularly in places frequented by children (1 to 3 years old) ) or adolescents.

 In the trade to ensure the same protection, one can find a device which must be installed on the rebate side and on the hinge side. Each membrane must be fixed to the visible faces of the sash and the frame using rails and screws (document FR.2.565.622).

The cost, the installation, and the fact that the door will keep track of the screws and rails after removal of the protective elements (after use for an individual for example) have enough to put off potential users.

 On the other hand in a previous design (French patent application NO 8912928 in the name of the present applicant) an elastomeric seal presented in the basic version imposed, according to the manufacturers, too large a perimeter for a too large thickness ratio between the inserted parts in the rebate (thickness approx. 0.5 mm) and that exposed on the rebate side (thickness approx. 3 mm, and reinforcing ribs). The die does not allow to hold a satisfactory extrusion, unlike a membrane of constant thickness, whatever its perimeter (example: air chamber).

 A second hazard being the bending at 1800 of the joint at the right of one of the two angles of the door edge, I had evolved at the end of 1989 and carried out many metallic prototypes of thickness 0.1 to 0.3 mm and lacking notable flexion.

 I also note that the attached subject of the document US 4,878,267 (as well as my request NO 89 12928 above mentioned), does not take into account these problems and does not present the concepts exposed in the variants below.

According to the proposed invention the recommended seal will remedy the above two drawbacks
Previously, it is therefore intended to be slid into the rebate between the frame and the opening, and it self-maintains in place.

 It deploys inside the rebate according to the opening of the door and exposes projecting walls on the rebate side and hinge side. These walls are able to prohibit; the access of a hand, fingers or various objects.

 1) According to a first basic variant, the seal consists of a single element, such as a sheet folded in its length, which may include one or more strands, these strands (opposite the back fold) cooperating to oppose access rebate side. Access to the hinge side is prohibited due to the omega shape of the seal regardless of the position of the opening (generally the seal is designed for a maximum opening of 1200).

 This variant involves cooperation of the edges of the strands so as not to present the risk of lifting them.

2) According to a second basic variant, induced by the previous one, the protection device consists of two elements
- The first element being that described above, without the means allowing the strands to be held together. This element acting as a frame, with regard to the rebate side protection.

 - The second element being a flexible membrane pressing on the above element, and masking the edges of the strands. This element smooth to the touch and without any particular resistance before a tactile groan.

Regarding the membrane, it can bar the entire gaping opening on the rebate side, it is then fixed on the frame and on the opening on the installer
According to another version, this membrane can be reduced to its minimum width (and size when closed), for this it is fixed on the one hand to the end of the strand located on the dormant side during the manufacture of the seal, and on the other hand on the opening at the time of installation.

3) The first and the second variant above are also capable of being improved by the following provisions
- Lamellar ioint to avoid access to the small space formed between the strand on the dormant side and said dormant.

 - fixing the strands of the reinforcing element, located on the standing side and opening side, on the latter.

 T'élément element reinforcement allowing to do without the mowing, or to cause a reminder for the closing of the opening. This element then being like a spring. Let us also note that this can conversely facilitate opening (extension in this case, and complete fixing.

 - Finally, a realaae of the tension of said spring can be proposed, this by deformation of the curved part of the ioint, on the shear side.

- Figure 1 shows an open position. the transverse profile of an ioint with two strands.

 - Fiaure 2 represents in the closed position, the transverse profile of a joint with two strands, equipped with a reduced width membrane and incidentally with a protective blade fixed on the frame.

 - Figure 3 shows in the open position, the transverse profile of a seal fitted with a membrane fixed on the frame.

 - Fiaure 4 represents, in the open position, the transverse profile of a joint whose two main strands are multiplied (example: 4 strands).

- Figure 5 -represents in the closed position the profile of a joint serving as a reminder or hinges er whose strands are fixed on the opening on the one hand and on the frame on the other. A tension rally device being shown

Figures 1 to 6 have been voluntarily shown on scale 1, for a door thickness of 40 mm and a maximum opening of 1200. These situations are the most common, however several series are possible

 In FIG. 2, the flexible PVC membrane (6) with a thickness of 0.5 mm for example is pinched in a fold (7) of sheet metal (stainless steel sep. 0.2 mm! Of the strand (1 ′). This membrar should be in any other plastic, elastomer or fabric material. It may be of a color matching that of the opening, while its fixing in (8) on the latter (adhesive for example), may be transparent. or hidden (pre-gluing or double-sided adhesive).

 The size of the membrane when the door is closed is around 25 X 25 mm.

 A seal (9) fixed for example to the frame, also by adhesive, eliminates if necessary, any residual risk (space width 3 mm approx.).

 - In Figure 3, a larger membrane (10) eliminates the above risaue, but the user will have more difficulty adjusting its fixation in (11,12) and more its size will be greater.

 - In Figure 4, the two primary strands have been multiplied into four strands. this can reduce the visible part of the strands during closing, but is not a priori of interest for a membrane at least sour its width. (Door less covered).

 However a joint with multiple strands. like a hedgehog of needles, could prove to be interesting. These points being fixed on a membrane, the latter being able to fold in diamond points or in parallel folds for example.

Membranes offering full protection with a number of plies are possible (with membrane or seal (9 'in simple contact or fixed on the frame)
- In Figure 5 is shown an ioint fixed for example with screws (14). these screwed onto the edge of (O) and (D) on the aond side, leave the ends of the strands 11.2) mobile, in particular that located on the opening side.

 It is possible to realize a tension of the spring (4) by deformation of its profile by means of screws (14) on support plate <16).

 - At the ficrure 5 and 7. it should be noted on the strand <1) on the dormant side, the male tab provided with two fins! 17 ~, it smooths in the opening (18) of the strand (2) opening side, so as to keep (1) on! 2).

 Specific holding strands (19), spreading in the form of strips and coming from the strand (2) opening side, hold this same strand near the opening.

 Tabs (20) forming a seal on the sleeping side, coming from the strand (1) on the sleeping side, can if necessary be held together by a link such as raw, a PVC plastic tab covering them, for example.

 In general, this type of joint should not have openings wider than about 3 mm (penetration of the fingers).

 The list of materials above is not exhaustive, other materials could prove to be interesting such as raw steels for example whose elastic lirite is higher than the 316L stainless steel used for the above prototypes (possible heat treatment , etc ...).

Regarding the membrane it will rather be chosen in a self-extinguishing material and an assortment of a few colors may be offered.

The joint would be used in an apartment with individuals or in places with a public vocation. such as kindergartens, medical houses, waiting rooms, educational establishments, etc.
There is a risk for this extraordinary tool that is handy for the most varied cases

Claims (10)

 1) Finger pinch protection device that is inserted into door frames (doors, etc.),  between the frame (D) and the opening (O).  This device which comprises means exposed on the rebate side (1 etc ...) and on the hinge side (4), so as to prevent any intrusion coming from the outside, is characterized in that it is constituted at its rebate side by at least one strand deploying as a fan in the rebate, between the edge of the door and the frame, the angular position of at least one strand varying as a function of that of the opening. The free edge of at least this strand cooperating with a support so as to avoid the lifting of said strand.  2) Device according to claim 1, characterized in that these strands can be held together by means of cooperating male and female type (17,18).  3) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that one or lips (19) formed from the strand located on the frame side (2) or of independent constitution (seal fixed to the frame (9) or on said strand), opposes any penetration into the angle formed by the strand (1) and the frame.  4) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a flexible membrane (6) which constitutes the element smooth to the touch is supported on the strand or strands forming a frame.  5) Device according to claim 4, characterized in that the membrane (6) is fixed on the one hand to the strand located on the dormant side (7) and on the other hand to the door, the membrane then being visible at least during the closure.  6) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that because of their arrangement and their dimensions, the faces (3) and the curved part (4) acting as protective hinge side, cooperate with each other so that that (3) are held flat or close to the opening (O) and the frame (D), whatever the position of the opening.  7) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the reinforcing element has a reserve of elasticity situated on the hinge side (4), this making it possible to automatically accompany the opening element to effect opening.  8) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the strands (1,2) can be fixed ~ on the one hand on the edge of the opening (14) and on the other hand on the frame, the opening can thus be maintained by the frame and said strands deploy from these fixed points.  9) Device according to claim 8, characterized in that the reinforcing element has a reserve of elasticity located on the hinge side (4), this making it possible to automatically accompany the opening element to effect closing or opening (compression or extension).  10) Device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the tension of the curved part (4) acting as a spring, can be adjusted or readjusted by deformation of its profile.
