Abstract

Hydraulic mix for the preparation of a sealing grout or for the preparation of a concrete; this mix comprises, per 1000 parts by weight of water: - from 50 to 2000 parts by weight of cement or of hydraulic binder, - from 0 to 200 parts by weight of bentonite, and - at least 5 parts by weight of active carbon. Use for preventing or retarding the migration of organic substances or materials.

Description

The present invention relates to a new hydraulic mixture containing activated carbon which is particularly useful in the preparation of grouts or concretes intended to prevent or slow the migration of substances or organic materials present in the soil and likely to come from various origins, in particular from settling tanks of chemical plants or possibly as a result of accidental contamination of the soil.

If it can fight effectively against certain pollutant metal cations as proposed in French patent application No. 84.11863, no satisfactory solution has been recommended, however, for retaining organic substances and substances which for certain types of among them can be particularly toxic.

Furthermore, under certain circumstances, it is necessary to be able to store, under the strict conditions of safety, residues of organic matter either in suitable containers or in containers, this temporarily or permanently. They should therefore be particularly watertight in order to avoid any contamination of the external environment.

After various studies, it has been found quite surprisingly that by incorporating in conventional hydraulic mixtures a certain proportion of activated carbon, an excellent retention of organic matter and more particularly of certain aromatic compounds such as phenols and their derivatives.

The subject of the present invention is therefore a new hydraulic mixture for the preparation of grouts or concretes comprising for 1000 parts by weight of water
from 50 to 2000 parts by weight of cement or hydraulic binder,
from 0 to 200 parts by weight of bentonite, but preferably
from 25 to 200 parts by weight and,
- at least 5 parts by weight of activated carbon and preferably
from 5 to 500 parts by weight.

According to the invention, the active carbon of the hydraulic mixture may be in the form of a powder or in the form of grains, but preferably the particle size must be less than 80 μm.

Although activated carbon is known to be an absorbent of aromatic compounds and also of unsaturated aliphatic compounds, it was by no means obvious that, by incorporating it into a hydraulic mixture, it could nonetheless have a good efficacy as absorber of organic compounds and in particular aromatic compounds.

The studies that have been carried out have made it possible to demonstrate that, contrary to all expectations, the retention rate of organic compounds was excellent and even higher than theoretically predictable, without any satisfactory explanation being found for this. phenomenon.

According to a first embodiment of the invention, the hydraulic mixture is in the form of a slurry for sealing a waste storage volume in the soil, by isolating said volume by forming a barrier or screen for sealing and retention of organic matter. This grout preferably contains 1000 parts by weight of water
from 50 to 200 parts by weight of cement or hydraulic binder,
from 25 to 35 parts by weight of bentonite, and
from 5 to 25 parts by weight of activated carbon.

As cements or hydraulic binders can be used the various known types, for example Portland cement, as well as cements comprising for example a certain amount of blast furnace slag or fly ash, such as cements marketed under the references CLK (cement containing at least 80% slag) and CPJ (cement containing 70 to 80% clinker).

As indicated above, the amount of cement or binder can vary in large proportions because this is in fact a function of the mechanical strength that it is desired to impart to the sealing screen having properties of retention of the substances. organic.

Of course, the slurry as defined above may also contain other conventional adjuvants such as, for example, an accelerator such as calcium chloride or a setting retarder such as sodium lignosulphite.

According to another preferred embodiment of the invention, the hydraulic mixture is used for the manufacture of concretes for the production of tanks or tanks for the storage of substances or organic materials.

According to this embodiment the concrete comprises 1000 parts by weight of water
from 1000 to 2000 parts by weight of cement or binder
hydraulic,
from 100 to 200 parts by weight of bentonite,
from 20 to 50 parts by weight of activated carbon, and
from 1000 to 1800 parts by weight of sand or of any inert material.

According to this embodiment, the concrete may also contain the same additives as those mentioned above for the grouts.

ETUDES COMPARATIVES
Coulis A : Pour 1000 litres d'eau
Coulis B : Pour 1000 litres d'eau
COMPARATIVE STUDIES
In order to show the good absorption qualities of the organic substances of the hydraulic mixture according to the invention, the following grouts were prepared:
Grout A: For 1000 liters of water
- 32 kilos of CV15 bentonite,
- 100 kilos of CLK45 cement,
- 10 kilos of activated charcoal (Akticarbon TK from CECA),
Grout B: For 1000 liters of water
- 32 kilos of CV15 bentonite,
- 100 kilos of CLK45 cement,
- 20 kilos of activated charcoal (Akticarbon TK from CECA).

Given the composition of Grout A and B, Grout A contains 6g of activated carbon and Grout B, 11.3g of activated carbon per 100g of dried hydrated grout, ie taking into account the water of constitution after hardening.

MODE OPERATOIRE
OPERATIVE MODE
After mixing the respective constituents of Grout A and B, they were cured for a period of 28 days.

The slurries were then crushed and sieved (average particle diameter 80 μm).

5 g of each of the fine powders obtained from Grouts A and B were then mixed and stirred in 250 ml of a phenol solution of increasing concentration.

30 ml of each of the solutions were then removed after reaching equilibrium. After centrifugation and filtration, the phenol was then assayed in each of the collected liquid fractions.

RESULTATS
RESULTS
For 100g of Grout A containing 6g of activated carbon, the assay made it possible to determine that the phenol retained at equilibrium represented a mass of 2.2g.

For 100 g of Grout B containing 11.3 g of activated carbon, it was found that the phenol retained at equilibrium represented a mass of 6 g.

Since Grout B contained an active carbon content twice that of Grout A, it would normally be expected that the phenol retained at equilibrium would have a mass of 4.4 g, whereas as shown in Above the analysis it was determined that this mass was 6g.

Furthermore, in order to complete this study, 100 g of pure activated carbon were treated under the same conditions and it was found that the phenol retained at equilibrium represented only a mass of 12 g.

It was furthermore verified that the pure hydrated slurry containing no active carbon had no retention effect of the phenol.
