The subject of the present invention is a method for washing cork stoppers, in particular low quality cork, this method bringing advantages of various kinds compared to other known methods for the same purpose.
Traditionally, cork was washed with sodium or calcium hypochlorite, which created various problems since such treatments degrade cork. In search of an alternative to these traditional washes, we arrived at the necessity of washing with oxygenated water (hydrogen peroxide), which can avoid the problems posed by washing with chlorine, and can improve the appearance of cork. By taking this route, washes were carried out with hydrogen peroxide, obtaining results of uneven quality, in general not very satisfactory if we take into account the complex process employed and the manner in which this process negatively affects the cork.
The problems which result from these washes with oxygenated water in alkaline solution (pH = 12) are that the alkalinity attacks the structure of the cork; we can see the effects of this attack by observing the small cork cells with a simple 400 magnification microscope.
Faced with all these problems, the Applicant, in its research and manufacture of auxiliary products for the cork stopper industry, has developed a washing process based on hydrogen peroxide which, unlike the other processes mentioned above , does not attack the structure of the cork, eliminates the woody parts of the latter, existing germs, and significantly improves the ability to compress and return to the initial state of the cork as it is introduced into the neck of the corresponding bottle.
The present invention therefore relates to a process for washing cork stoppers, essentially characterized in that a composition based on water and hydrogen peroxide is prepared in equal parts with approximately 10% of a basic compound as a catalyst; the caps placed inside a rolling drum are sprayed with this composition for about 8 to 10 minutes, after this time, hot air is injected at a temperature of 60 to 800C on the caps treated in space of 20 to 30 minutes, then the gases released and the water vaporized during the process are removed using a conventional vacuum cleaner.
The caps bleached by washing which is the subject of the present invention need not be neutralized by salts or acids, since they do not contain residues. The present washing uses only water, hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst, which disappears by decomposition, activating the hydrogen peroxide, the latter decomposing in the form of a chain and giving off the corresponding heat.
After numerous exhaustive tests of the present washing process, a series of extensive physico-chemical and microbiological analyzes has been carried out which corroborate the thesis that the present washing does not in any way damage the structure of the cork. In such tests, the resistance to flexibility and to rupture, the resistance to wetting and the impermeability of gases were checked.
In the analyzes, the absence of oxygen retained in the stopper, the absence of germs, the content of ions and cations was verified. Tests have also been carried out with corks washed according to the present process with various quality wines, checking the pH, the alcoholic degree, the fixed acidity and the volatile acidity, the stability of the sugars, of the aromatic esters, and the behavior of S02 in wines. All the data from these analyzes were compared with the corresponding data from the original wines, the results being highly satisfactory.
On microphotographs of small cork cells belonging to natural cork and to cork washed according to this process, no difference in dimensions was recorded.
We also carried out tests with stoppers which presented rot spots, by classifying the germs encountered, and by checking that there were no germs of any type after the stoppers were washed with the present process.
In summary, the advantages of this process can be classified as follows - elimination of germs - laundering and cleaning of the woody parts of the
cork; - increased resistance to wetting and
impermeability of gases - cleaning of small cork cells, increasing
its power of expansion - elimination of the taste of cork in wines and others
bottled liquids.
The present washing process is a rapid process for laundering and drying cork stoppers in a single cycle, in which materials such as water, hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide) and a basic compound act as catalyst. . The mixture of these materials comes into contact with the cork stoppers, producing the decomposition of the catalyst, and, as a result of this decomposition, the oxygenated water in turn decomposes into oxygen and water. This simultaneous reaction and decomposition which takes place through oxidation causes the woody parts of the low quality cork to be eliminated, achieving the latter a compressive capacity and an initial reset equal to those of a good quality cork. In addition, the action of oxygen eliminates the germs existing in the cork as well as the taste of cork in the wine.
Basically, the method for washing cork stoppers which is the subject of the present invention is as follows: a composition based on water and hydrogen peroxide is prepared in equal parts with approximately 10% of a compound basic as a catalyst, such as an volatile unstable salt. This composition is applied by spraying on the surface of the cork stoppers while they are subjected to stirring inside a rolling drum in the space of about 8-10 minutes. In this contact phase between such a composition and the plugs, the catalyst, very unstable in the aqueous phase, decomposes, and the elements of the decomposition act on the hydrogen peroxide, making it enter a phase. of decomposition into free oxygen and residual water. Once the initial minutes of contact during which this decomposition has taken place, one begins to inject hot air at a temperature of 60 to 800C for a determined time between approximately 20 and 30 minutes to complete the reaction and the drying of the plugs. During this drying phase, the reaction gases and the vaporized water are eliminated.
With the process described and in suitable equipment, it is possible to wash, bleach and dry up to approximately 30,000 cork stoppers in a single 40-minute cycle, time considerably less than is necessary with the known processes.
It is understood that the embodiment described above is in no way limitative and may give rise to any desirable modifications, without thereby departing from the scope of the present invention. Thus, in particular, this process could be carried out with more suitable means and materials and more convenient accessories.
