Abstract

The invention relates to a device making it possible for sailing boats of the catamaran type to come about whilst improving the manoeuvring comfort and sailing safety. It consists of two centre boards pivoting about a pin at their front part and connected together at their back upper part by a cable passing through the boat by virtue of a system of guidance using pulleys. This device is applicable to all sizes and all types of catamaran: sport, racing or cruising.

Description

I. DESCRIPTION
I. DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a device for automatically lifting daggerboards for multihull ships of the catamaran type intended to allow a good ascent to the wind and to follow a better course while eliminating the danger presented by the hull drift downwind, which by its resistance to the liquid element opposite to the thrust of the wind exerted at the vélique thrust center (fig. 1) introduces a reversal torque commonly called "croc in leg" which can lead to the capsizing of the ship.

The main existing techniques are the following
- "Saber" daggerboards (fig. 2) long translational blades: ertical, very effective, but requiring manual intervention by hoist or winch to raise the leeward, or both in case of shallow depth d water under the hulls which can lead to the fact that they do not fade, to serious damage to the hulls in the event of encounter with wrecks or high fcnds or simply in the event of being stranded.

- A second technique often used is that of the pivoting daggerboards (fig. 3) articulated in the longitudinal direction of the shells around an axis placed at the front part, which largely eliminates the risk of breakage when forgetting to go back up at stranding, but remain what
Cracking fragile during impacts and also require vigilance and intervention of the crew to go up the leeward.

- Finally, the third technique (fig. L) consists in providing each shell with fixed fins of lesser efficiency due to their shallow depth, which are not very fragile and facilitate stranding, but which present a certain risk because the resistance of the wind drift cannot be suppressed.

The solution provided by the proposed technique (fig. 5) consists of a pair of pivoting fins with an intermediate surface between the solutions of Figures 3 and 4 and connected together at their anterosuperior part by a system of cables and pulleys.

When the catamaran gites under the effect of the wind, the greater Archimedes' thrust on the drift of the hull that sinks (hull under the wind) tends to make this drift go up, in parallel, a lesser Archimedean thrust on the hull drift which comes out of the water (hull in the wind) tends to make it descend.

Due to the connection of the daggerboards, these two trends add up, achieving a permanent automatic Froportional system of equilibrium with the boat's degree of gite which can go as far as complete erasure of the leeway drift in the event of a significant inclination. (fig. 6).

An additional arrangement consisting of a slight inclination of 5 to 10 of the daggerboards relative to the vertical axis of the hulls towards
The interior will complete the device for a double purpose
1) Due to the water pressure perpendicular to the surface of the daggerboards, the inclination introduces a vertical component upwards F1 on the leeward drift therefore a tendency to recognize the area, and a vartical component F '1 down on the windward drift therefore a Cendance to bring it down. These two forces are added to the Archimedes' thrusts described above.

2) A lower resistance of the leeward drift under which the water nets slide (fig. 8), while the wind drift due to its reverse inclination catches the water nets like a plowshare plow improving its anti-drift action.

This invention will find its field of application as well on maxi offshore racing catamarans, by their optimum performance at all degrees of boat heel, particularly in the case of solo racing since it frees the skipper from a additional manual intervention, only on small catamarans of the standard range
Dart or Hobie cat, and also for safety reasons on habitable cruising catamarans not always in the hands of experienced crews especially in the case of rental boats.
