Abstract

The invention relates to an arrangement making it possible to design a two-stroke internal combustion engine with several cylinders, whilst keeping it small. The cylinders 2 are grouped together in modules of two. Their connecting rods actuate a drive shaft 5 by virtue of two overhanging crank pins 3 located at its ends. The precompression chamber 10, since it contains only one crankshaft web, is of small width. Furthermore, its outside face 9 is free, allowing the direct intake of fresh gases through the pipe 1. Each pair of cylinders is secured to the others and to the transmission members such as the clutch 8 by the gear 4 which drives the intermediate shaft (layshaft) 6. The device according to the invention is particularly suitable for the production of modular ranges of engines, and for the design of compact multi-cylinder motorized propulsion units for all-terrain (scrambling) motorcycles.
