I1 découle de la conception de cet embiellage un regroupement des cylindres deux à deux pour former un module de base du moteur, module pouvant être utilisé en nombre variable et selon une disposition géométrique adaptée aux besoins: quatre cylindres en V, en carré, à plat, six cylindres en W, -etc... Les modules de base sont synchronisés et solidarisés entre eux en étant en prise avec un arbre intermédiaire par le biais de leurs pignons centraux de vilebrequins.Même si lton multiplie les modules de base pour augmenter la capacité totale du moteur, la largeur du bloc reste déterminée par les valeurs d'un bicylindre de faible cylindrée.
