Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to the treatment of moderately radioactive materials. and, in particular, that of ustite radioactive ion exchange resins, with a view to placing them in a stable form for a very prolonged storage.
In nuclear power plants, organic ion exchange resins, for example based on polystyrene, are used for the continuous cleaning of the cooling water circuits and for the purification of water in the basins in which the fuel nuclear used is stored. The ion exchange resins are in the form of aggregates, for example, for cleaning the primary cooling circuit, and powders, for example for cleaning the condensate and water purification circuits of the basins.
After use, these resins contain radioactive metallic elements (Co, Fe, Mg, Ag, Ni, etc.), eventueller-nt chloride ions, and they also contain ionic drift of boron and lithium in variable and variable amounts . They are then radioactive waste, which can not be regenerated and cuti, therefore, must be treated to be placed in a table form, allowing a permanent and safe storage for several hundred years, when the radioactivity has decreased until a level where there is no longer any risk.
The treatment of these radioactive resins, which is mainly used at present, consists of a coating treatment of said resins in a polymer, in particular styrene, the coated resins then being placed in containers. This solution provides quite satisfactory results on the immediate technical level, but its durability over very long times is unknown.
By packing it, various methods of coating this radioactive waste with hydraulic binders had been proposed and proved to be incompatible. with the nature and concentration of the resins to be coated.
The coating of these resins in the state by a hydraulic binder ultimately leads to the destruction of the resulting mortar (the coated resin as the granulate). Thus, with artificial Portland-type cements, there are setting problems and, subsequently, dimensional variations of mortars that are difficult to control.
Indeed, the ion exchange resins to be considered are of two types:
anionic resins mainly saturated with boron,
which is a strongly retarding agent and
hardening hydraulic binders; and
cationic resins which are mainly saturated with
lithium, which is an accelerator for
taking the hydraulic binders, it being understood that the coating products contain either one or the other, or a mixture of the two types of resins, so that it is possible to separate them for individual treatment .
The present invention provides an original solution to the problem of treating and coating radioactive ion exchange resins with a hydraulic binder.
According to the invention, a solution has been sought that may be suitable for anionic resins alone as for cationic resins alone, as well as mixtures of anionic and cationic resins irrespective of the mixing ratio, since it is not possible to It is not possible to separate these resins and treat them individually. Research has been oriented to overcome the harmful effects on the setting and hardening of hydraulic binders, the two main radioactive species retained by the exchange resins tions that are the soluble salts of lithium and boron.
According to the invention, prior to the coating of the ion exchange resins, these are subjected to a pretreatment so as to precipitate the lithium radioactive compounds in the form of insoluble salts, the boron compounds being, for their part, they are precipitated in the form of insoluble calcium salts during a subsequent coating operation, conventionally carried out with ion exchange resins, using a hydraulic binder of particular composition.
The subject of the present invention is therefore first of all a pre-treatment system for radioactive ion exchange resins, then the complete treatment system constituted by the pre-treatment system and by a particular cement-based composition, and, finally, finally> the complete process for the treatment of radioactive ion exchange resins, in order to place them in a stable form for transport and storage.
FOR THE PRETREATMENT OF ION EXCHANGER QUEENS
This system includes:
a water-soluble aluminum salt, in a quantity
sufficient to precipitate, in the form of
of lithium aluminate insoluble in
radioactive compounds of lithium contained in said
ion exchange resins, said aluminum salt
from an acid capable of providing, after its
release, by treatment with an agent
neutralization. a salt also insoluble in water
and
- the neutralization agent mentioned above
As the aluminum salt, aluminum sulphate is advantageously used. In this case, the sulfuric acid released during the pre-treatment reaction with formation of lithium aluminate can advantageously be neutralized with natural barium carbonate. (whiterite) or synthetic, or better by anhydrous or hydrated barium hydroxide, leading to barium sulfate, also insoluble compound in water.
Under these conditions, the pre-treated resins will contain a mixture of radioactive lithium aluminate and barium sulfate, both insoluble. The advantage of the presence of insoluble salts is to promote or allow the hardening of the cement in the next step of the treatment, which will be described below.
Furthermore, according to the present invention, the aluminum salt which is part of the pre-treatment system is present in a proportion of 1 to 8 parts by weight, expressed as Al (OH) 3 (aluminum hydroxide), for 100 parts by weight of the catered radioactive resins, calculated on a dry basis, and the neutralizing agent is present in a proportion of 1 to 25 parts by weight, expressed as Ba (OH) 2 (barium hydroxide, per 100 parts by weight); the weight of the radioactive resins to be treated, calculated on a dry basis.
In the case of the use of aluminum sulphate and octahydarated barium hydroxide, it is advantageous to use 1 to 17 parts by weight of the first per 100 parts by weight of dry resins, and 1 to 48 parts by weight of the second. per 100 parts by weight of dry resins.
If the barium hydroxide octohydrate is replaced by barium carbonate, 1 to 20 parts by weight are used for the same quantity of dry resins. the maximum value indicated corresponds to a pretreatment applied to cationic resins only. It is known that this pretreatment, which can be applied both to cationic resins and anionic resins and their mixtures, will only have effects on cationic resins, since it aims to precipitate the soluble radioactive compounds of lithium which are strongly accelerators of setting and hardening of hydraulic binders, and which, if not placed in an insoluble form, would lead to the problems indicated in the preamble of this text.
Furthermore, in the pre-treatment system according to the invention, the aluminum salt may be present in the state, or preferably dissolved in water.
This system comprises the pre-treatment system which has just been described and a cementitious composition containing lime in an amount sufficient to precipitate the radioactive boron compounds contained in said ion exchange resins, in the form of calcium borates, which are poorly soluble in water.
final ;
A particularly preferred cementitious composition according to the invention comprises, per 100 parts by weight:
from 70 to 95 parts by weight of at least one cement
from 2 to 15 parts by weight of at least one additive
mineral and / or organic to improve the
compactness and mechanical characteristics of the mortar
final;
from 2 to 15 parts by weight of hydrated lime, and
from 0 to 4 parts by weight of at least one adjuvant
organic to give the mixture lec
rheological characteristics necessary for a good
set up.
The cements are chosen especially from cement
Normal artificial Portland (CPA) or high sulphate-resistant cements, which consist of certain cements (CPA, CHF and CLK).
As for the mineral and / or organic additives intended to improve the compactness and the mechanical characteristics of the final mortar - for which the resins serve as granulate -, they are chosen in particular from natural or artificial pozzolans, such as fly ash or better fumes. silica, and resins, such as latexes.
Lime is useful for precipitating the boron radioactive derivatives contained in the anionic resins constituting or forming part of the catering resins, in the form of weakly insoluble calcium borate, thus limiting the delay, setting and curing effect attributable to the boron. The amount of lime may be excessive vis-à-vis boron, to trap any excess of aluminum in the form of calcium aluminate.
The organic additives intended to give the mixture the characteristics necessary for a good setting up are chosen in particular from water-reducing plasticizers and / or fluidiriants.
The cementitious composition, as defined above, can also contain up to 10 parts by weight of fibers, per 100 parts by weight of said composition, these fibers, the role of which is a complementary role to that of the additives. minerals and / or organic above, being of all types commonly used; for example, metal fibers, treated glass fibers and organic fibers, such as carbon fibers, polyparaphenylene terephthalamide (Kevlar), acrylic fibers and polypropylene fibers.
The cementitious composition is also present in a proportion of at least 10 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the radioactive resins to be treated.

In the first step, the precipitation reaction is rapidly obtained by mixing the drained ion exchange resins with the soluble aluminum salt, which is added as is, or preferably dissolved in water.
The relative amounts of aluminum salt and ion exchange resins to be used have been indicated above, as well as the amount of neutralization base which is added in the second stage of this pre-treatment.
The next step consists of a conventional type coating.
The mixing of the mortar can be carried out in a measuring jug, by means of a conventional mixer, and the comnosition obtained, transferred into a container, or it can be carried out directly in the container.
The assembly may be possibly vibrated, to allow the degassing of the mortar and thus improve the final characteristics.
To further illustrate the present invention, the process which is the subject of this invention has been applied to seven resins of known nature. The proportions of the pretreatment system and the cement composition that were used in each case are shown in the Table below.
As can be seen, Example 2 relates to the treatment of anionic resins for which the same amounts of pre-treatment system were used as in the case of the treatment of cationic resins (Example 1). The setting time was in this case more important, but the resistance to compression has retained a satisfactory value. It should be emphasized in this connection that the treatments which are carried out in practice are directed to resins whose nature may not be known, or which, in operations conducted continuously, may be very heterogeneous over time.
