Description

DISPOSITIF POUR LA MESURE DE LA TEMPERATURE DE LA NEIGE,
UTILISABLE NOTAMMENT POUR LE SKI DE FOND.
DEVICE FOR MEASURING THE TEMPERATURE OF SNOW,
USEFULLY FOR CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING.

The present invention relates to a device for measuring the temperature of snow, usable in particular for cross-country skiing.

In general, we know that the practice of cross-country skiing requires a good knowledge of the state of the snow on which we want to ski and in particular its temperature. Indeed, the mechanical properties of snow and, in particular, its sliding characteristics or, on the contrary, its ability to come to stick and to accumulate under skis, depend largely on the temperature of this snow, mainly at the level of its surface layer.

However, in the current state of the art of cross-country skiing, there is no ski with a universal surface condition which can be suitable for all qualities of snow. This is also the reason why cross-country skiers use, for each type of snow, a suitable wax which they pass over the sliding surface of their skis.

This waxing constitutes in fact one of the great problems of cross-country skiing. Indeed, the properties of snow and, more particularly, its temperature can vary considerably from one place to another and from one instant to another depending on the exposure of the place, drafts, 'sunshine, time, etc ..., so that the temperature displayed at the station does not constitute sufficient information for the determination of the type of wax to be used.

Consequently, cross-country skiers usually take a wax bowl containing the main types of wax during their hike so that they can be opened
so as to adapt the waxing to all the snow qualities encountered. Most often, the type of wax is determined empirically, with the skier counting on his experience. This method is nonetheless approximate and is not suitable for the occasional skier who does not have sufficient knowledge of the snow and / or the place where he is going to ski.

In an attempt to eliminate this drawback which considerably reads the practice of cross-country skiing, we have already proposed temperature measurement devices in the form of a probe which is inserted into the snow, this device displaying the temperature as well as possibly the nature of the wax to use taking into account this temperature. However, these devices prove to be inconvenient and are therefore little used: the skier must indeed stop, look for the device in his bag, take the measurement, very often after taking off his gloves, then, once once the measurement has been made, put the device, which has in the meantime covered with snow or ice, back in the bag. To these disadvantages is added that resulting from the fact that such a device can be easily lost.

The invention therefore more particularly aims to eliminate all these drawbacks.

To this end, it therefore proposes a measurement device incorporated into a ski pole, this device comprising a temperature sensor located at the tip of the pole, this sensor being connected to an electronic display device located in the upper part. stick, preferably at the level of its handle.

Of course, the device described above must be electrically autonomous and therefore includes a source of electrical energy, such as a battery or an easily accessible accumulator. I1 can also advantageously include easily manipulated and waterproof control means, in particular an on-off switch, preferably located near the handle.

Likewise, this device could have other functionalities: it could in particular include a clock using the above-mentioned display device to indicate the time.

It is clear that the device described above can be used for other purposes than those of cross-country skiing. This device could just as easily be used for downhill skiing or even to take temperature readings as part of avalanche forecasting. .

An embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is a partially axial sectional view of the upper end of a ski pole equipped with a device according to the invention
FIG. 2 partially shows in section the tip of the stick shown in FIG. 1.

In these figures, the ski pole comprises, in a conventional manner, a tubular body 1 provided, in its upper part, with a handle 2 equipped with a wrist strap. In this example, the handle 2 consists of a tubular plastic sleeve having external imprints to ensure the grip of the fingers. This sleeve is engaged and then fixed, for example by bonding to the end of the body 1. This comprises a threaded portion 3 protruding from the body 1 onto which a plug 4 is screwed which slightly extends the sleeve ensuring a watertight sealing of the 'extremity of the body 1. At the level of the handle 2, the body 1 delimits a volume used to receive batteries 5.5' serving to ensure the supply of electric current to the temperature measuring device.

Inside this volume, the batteries are retained by a partition 6 provided with a contact pad 7 on which the terminal of the lower battery 5 ′ is held in abutment by means of a spring 8 provided in the plug 4. This contact pad 7 is connected to an electronic module 8 housed in the body 1, on the other side of the partition 6 and which comprises means for amplifying the electrical signal supplied by a temperature sensor 9 as well as processing means of this signal for the display of the temperature measured on a display cell 10, for example liquid crystal, mounted in an orifice of the body provided just below the handle 2. In this example the return of the current electric battery is carried out by the body 1 which is made of an electrically conductive material, for example aluminum. The electrical connection between the body 1 and the electronic module 8 is then effected by the intermediary of a switch, the pusher 11 of which is placed just below the handle 2 so as to be easily accessible by the user.

As previously mentioned, the electronic module 8 can comprise a clock circuit making it possible also to display the time. This can then be adjusted by means of switches not shown.

Thus, in FIG. 1, the display cell 10 comprises an area 12 assigned to display the temperature and an area 13 assigned to display the time.

To these two areas is added a third area 14 assigned to a movable index 15 at the right of a color scale 16 'allowing direct indication of the color of the wax to be used. Indeed, usually, each type of wax corresponds to a specific color.

The temperature sensor 9 used in the device described above is housed in the lower part of the body 1 located below the support disc 16 of the stick and is electrically connected to the electronic module 8 by means of an electric cable 17.

In the example shown in FIG. 2, this sensor 9 is mounted axially adjustable so as to allow temperature measurement at the desired depth, it being understood that during the measurement which is obtained by slightly pricking the stick in the snow, the reference of the snow surface is provided by the support disc 16 which is maintained at the level of said surface.

More specifically, in this example, the tip of the stick is produced by a cylindrical piece with a conical end 18 which engages partially in the lower end of the body 1. This piece 18 comprises for its fixing an annular groove 19 into which engages one or more nipples 20 produced for example by a slight deformation of the body 1. This gives an axial fixing with however the possibility of rotation of the part 18 in the body 1. The part 18 is also integral a threaded rod 21 which extends axially inside the body 1 and on which a support element 22 is screwed on which the sensor 9 is fixed. This support element 22 is mounted to slide in the body 1 while being integral in rotation thereof.

Thus, by rotating the part 18, it becomes possible to adjust the axial position of the sensor 9 inside the body 1.

Of course, the invention is not limited to such an arrangement. The sensor could in fact be located outside the body and for example be carried by a sleeve mounted sliding on the body 1 with the possibility of adjustment in the axial position.
