<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
commutateur 14.
Il ressort de ce qui précède que l'amenée du commutateur 14 à une position où il relie entre elles les bornes 45 et 52 a pour effet de connecter la batterie 49 en série avec la résistance fixe 39, la résistan- ce compensatrice 31 et le dispostif de mesure 41. La tension aux bornes du dispositif de mesure est déterminée par la résistance du circuit shunt comprenant le potentiomètre 43 et la résistance fixe 47. Lorsqu'on monte initialement ou remplace la batterie., on règle le potentiomètre 43 de façon à intercaler le minimum de résistance de potentiomètre en série avec la résistance fixe 47 et le maximum de résistance de potentiomètre en série avec le dispositif de mesure 41 ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to a clinical thermometer, and more particularly to an electrical apparatus serving to measure and instantaneously record temperatures, apparatus of the type in which use is made of resistance elements called "thermistors".
Thermistors of this general type are known and their use as temperature sensitive resistance elements is well known.
We have also already used a thermistor mounted in one of the arms of a Wheatstone bridge circuit. In this application of the temperature sensitive element, the bridge is connected to a calibrated instrument (galvanometer), and there is a direct relationship between the temperature to which the thermistor is subjected and the indication read on this calibrated instrument. The latter gives a zero indication when the bridge is in equilibrium, while all

Lowering bu '"raising" 1a: the temperature directly applied to the thermistor gives a positive or negative indication on the calibrated instrument. It was also already known to insert a thermistor in a series circuit in which the thermistor is heated directly by its connection in series with a battery.
In such an installation, the thermistor is provided with a constant resistance; and a DC ammeter is connected in series with this resistor. Thus, in this arrangement, the direct current ammeter can be calibrated so as to directly indicate the temperature of the thermistor in degrees.
The present invention mainly relates to the application of thermistors to a clinical thermometer for the instantaneous measurement or indication of temperature; and it further relates to the circuit arrangement provided for the temperature measurement. The invention also includes the construction of the probe in which the thermistor is arranged in combination with the measuring or indicating instrument.
The invention proposes in particular to produce: an electric clinical thermometer, of simple construction and capable of recording the temperature, so to speak instantaneously; - an interchangeable probe which can be quickly and easily replaced or changed without modifying the device provided for indicating and recording an exact and instantaneous temperature; - a thermometer comprising a probe and a calibrated instrument sensitive to temperature, the probe being established so that the sensitivity or temperature recording area is limited to the tip or end of the probe:
- a probe composed of a thermistor (resistance element sensitive to temperature) embedded in an appropriate material and provided with an aluminum sleeve intended to protect and strengthen the body of the probe, said material being either: a ) a silicon-based material; b) a plastic material essentially inert to chemicals and allowing the instrument to be treated with boiling water without this having any detrimental effect on the physical structure of the probe c) an electrically insulating material.
In series with the thermistor of the probe is arranged a compensating resistor intended to correct the variations of the absolute resistance of the thermistor, in order to establish an interchangeable probe of predetermined resistance.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be demonstrated in the course of the detailed description given below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

To adjust the device in this way, there is provided a potentiometer provided with an operating knob 18 which can be turned to adjust the resistance of the potentiometer. From the front face of the box 10 containing the ammeter leaves a cord 19 which can

In this case, the resistor used is a thermistor.
Thermistors are temperature-sensitive, semiconductor-type resistance elements that have a strongly negative coefficient of resistivity as a function of temperature. This property makes thermistors particularly suitable for various special applications in electrical circuits.
EMI2.5
Like the resistance of a thermistor ..ie coa, erâbenent with its temperature, the combination of a thermistor with any device suitable for measuring or indicating its resistance is particularly advantageous to its use as a sensitive thermometer.
FIG. 2 shows the probe 23, and more particularly an interchangeable probe comprising a plug or head 22 and a tubular body of elongated shape 23 made of glass or plastic. In this tubular body is mounted a thermistor 28 (thermosensitive resistance). The bou-

This back is also connected by a wire 30 to a compensating resistor 31. The opposite side of the compensating resistor 31 is itself connected by a wire 32 to the pin 25.
For the sake of simplicity, the plug 22 has a recess 31 A whose diameter is a little larger than that of the compensating resistor which can be inserted therein. Thanks to this construction, the compensating resistor 31 may be of similar construction to that of a fuse, the contact of which is effected either by one or the other of

ends. Thus, when the resistor 31 is inserted into its housing 3ils) it comes into contact with the wire 30, by one of its ends, and the pin 25 can itself be inserted fully inside the recess. 31A to make contact with the opposite end of resistor 31.
This makes it possible to remove this resistance or replace it with another, quickly and with the minimum of effort. It will be noted that the thermistor 28 is mounted inside and at the end of the plastic body 23A which surrounds it, this body being provided with a bulb-shaped end which
EMI2.8
1-term plugs the end of the element tobé2.: ireo In this way,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the sensing element 28 is mounted as close as possible to the sensing end of the plastic enveloping body 23 A.
As a result, the probe is provided with an extremely sensitive end and this allows the construction shown, namely the addition of an aluminum sheath 22A, which protects the elongated probe and gives it mechanical resistance. bigger. The sheath 22A is open at one of its ends to fit inside the plug 22 and thus provide the necessary support and mechanical strength without this depending on its contact with the probe element 23A. However, the opposite end of the aluminum sheath 22a has a small opening 22B which is large enough to allow the sensitive end of the element 23A to partially protrude through this opening.
This particular or bulbous portion of the end of the element 23A is in reality the sensitive point or zone of the probe. A large number of probes of the type indicated at 23 are established and provided with a compensating resistor 31 so that they are interchangeable for a given instrument such as that shown in FIG. 1. The compensating resistor 31 may however have any predetermined ohmic value, depending on the indicating instrument used.
It is evident that in addition to the clinical thermometer allowing an instantaneous reading in use, the interchangeability of the probe means that a probe can, thanks to the plug 22, "be quickly removed after a reading, to also allow and quickly inserting another probe 23 into receptacle 21, the instrument then being ready = for another patient and a new temperature measurement. It is no longer necessary to wait until the probe has been sterilized, or re-check the accuracy of the instrument before using it. As a result, a large number of temperature readings can be taken successively in a short period of time and can be completely relied on. instrument, due to the precision of the probes and their interchangeability.
It is also evident that a probe such as the one previously described minimizes the risk of breakage or damage which could result from rough operations, since the aluminum sheath protects the probe and, since it is not sensitive. than electric current, it requires virtually no precautions when storing, from the point of view of the position (level) given to it or the temperature or humidity of the environment in contact with the probe. This probe withstands the most severe conditions in service and is always precise and ready to use.
The particular plastic substance to be used for element 23A should necessarily be almost completely inert to chemicals and should have a physical structure which does not change at the boiling temperature of water or at a slightly higher temperature. In addition, it is understood that this plastic substance will have to ensure a strongly negative coefficient of resistivity as a function of temperature. The particular probe shown is a body of plastic substance about 50 mm in length and about 78 mm in diameter, provided with a bulb-shaped end portion whose diameter is about 2.3 mm; the aluminum jacket 22A is a thin-walled tube about 0.04mm thick.
Referring to Figure 3, it will be noted that the pins 24, 25 and 26 are respectively complementary to sockets 33, 34 and 35.
The socket 33 is electrically connected by a wire 36 to the terminal 37 of the switch 14. The socket 34 is connected by a wire 38 to the fixed base resistor 39 of the indicator, and the socket 35 is connected by a wire 40 to one of the terminals of the measuring device 41. It goes without saying that this device is mounted inside the box 10 and provided with the dial 11 described above. A wire 42 connects the other terminal of the measuring device 41 to the movable portion of the potentiometer 43. The aforementioned resistor 39 is connected by a wire 44 to the terminal 45 of the switch 14. The central terminal of this switch is connected by a wire 46 to one side of a resistor 47, the other side of which is connected to one of the terminals of the potentiometer 43.
The potentiometer is also connected by a wire 48 to the negative of the battery 49, the positive of which is connected by wires 50 and 51 to the terminals 52 and 53 of the

switch 14. In this embodiment of the device, the battery 49 is preferably an ordinary dry cell battery, of about 1.5 volts.
It emerges from the foregoing that bringing the switch 14 to a position where it interconnects the terminals 45 and 52 has the effect of connecting the battery 49 in series with the fixed resistor 39, the compensating resistor 31 and the measuring device 41. The voltage at the terminals of the measuring device is determined by the resistance of the shunt circuit comprising the potentiometer 43 and the fixed resistance 47. When the battery is initially fitted or replaced, the potentiometer 43 is adjusted so as to insert the minimum resistance of the potentiometer in series with the fixed resistance 47 and the maximum resistance of the potentiometer in series with the measuring device 41;
and as the strength of the battery decreases, the setting of the potentiometer is changed so that, for any given voltage of the battery, a constant voltage is maintained across the terminals of the disproportionate device 41. Preferably, the fixed resistor 47 is chosen. as low as this is consistent with practical limits on the amount of current used, so as to decrease parallel resistance errors under extreme battery voltage conditions when the device is actually used to provide temperature readings .
In actual service, the circuit is established between contacts 45 and 52 when switch 14 has been moved to its lowest position, i.e. the "INDEX" position. In this switch position, the knob 18 of the potentiometer is rotated to bring the needle of the measuring device opposite the line 54 of the dial scale, which represents the base or normal temperature, for example 37 ° C. .
Then, when this normal position has been established for all the given battery voltage, switch 14 is operated to connect between them the berns 37 and 53, which establishes a circuit which, starting from the positive of the battery, passes through the conductor 51, contact 53, switch 14, contact 37, wire 36, pin 34, thermistor 28, wire 29, pin 26, wire 40, one of the sides of the measuring device 41, then to from the other side of this device, by wire 42, a portion of the potentiometer, wire 48, to return to the negative of the battery, the circuit being as follows: -. established through thermistor 28.
As the conductivity of the thermistor varies with temperature, the instrument instantly indicates on dial 12 the temperature to which the thermistor has been brought.
In general, the thermistor will be given a resistance between 1000 and 1500 ohms for use with a measuring device in which the zero is outside the normal scale is consisting of an ammeter set to indicate 0.5 milliamps to 1 milliamps. . The potentiometer could for example be of the order of 0 to 30 ohms; and the value of resistor 47 may advantageously be of the order of 25 ohms.
In general, the substance of which the thermistor is made will be chosen from the class of "semiconductors". This class includes materials for which the resistance ratio (R33 3 C / R43 3 C) is preferably of the order of 1.5 or more, this ratio being adjusted so that it has substantially the same value for all thermistors. intended for use in given equipment, the absolute resistance at 43.3 C being approximately 100 ohms. Such thermistors are well known. One method of manufacture consists in melting or sintering a semiconductor of a ceramic nature, such as a mixture of oxides, so as to form a small bead placed between conductive wires.
Suitable oxides are, for example, the oxides of manganese and nickel and mixtures of oxides of manganese, nickel and cobalt, although there are other known materials having the desired characteristics.

As the compensating resistor 31 is housed inside the plug 22, it is obvious that it is changed each time the plug is replaced. This allows said resistance and the fixed base resistor 39 to also have a determined resistance, equal to the particular resistance that the thermistor has at the chosen base temperature, so that each time the plug is replaced by a another, a new compensating resistor is also added, the value of which is equal to the difference in resistance between the new thermistor and the fixed base resistor 39 at said temperature. As the ratio curve is identical for all thermistors, the same dial of the measuring device graduated in temperatures can be used.
FIG. 4 represents an alternative circuit of the bridge type, '
In this type of circuit, the elements contained in the plug 22 are those enveloped by the dotted lines indicated at 55. They include a thermistor 28 which is identical to that previously described, (a base resistor 39) and two resistors. compensators. 56 and 57, which are also housed in the cap and have a specific value to compensate for any variation in resistance of a particular thermistor 28. The base or fixed resistance 39 can be mounted inside the instrument, but it will be connected to compensating resistor 57. Resistors 58,59 and 60 complete the rest of the point, as shown.
The measuring device 61 is connected to the circuit between the resistor 56 and the thermistor 28 with the aid of conductors 62 and 63 between which is interposed a rectifier 64 which prevents negative deviation of the measuring device 61. The other terminal of the measuring device, is connected by means of a wire 65 between the resistors 59 and 60. The current is supplied to the bridge by the battery 49, via a switch 66 on the one hand, and the potentiometer 67 on the other hand. There is also provided a switch 68 intended to connect the potentiometer 67 and the resistor 60 alternately to the thermistor 28 and to the fixed base resistor 39 and the compensating resistor 57.
Therefore, to adjust the apparatus, the arm of the switch 68 is brought to the desired position to connect the base resistor 39 and the compensating resistor 57, instead of the thermistor 28, and the potentiometer is then adjusted so that the needle of device 61 is placed opposite a suitable base value. The switch 68 is then brought to a position suitable for switching on the thermistor 28. Consequently, any temperature variation giving rise to variations in the resistance of the thermistor 28 will be indicated by the Moorish device 61.
Preferably, in the case of a thermistor whose resistance varies from 1000 to 1500 ohms for a chosen temperature scale, a potentiometer 67 of 5000 ohms and a base resistor 39 of 1225 ohms for example will be used. The compensating resistor 57 could be between 0 and 150 ohms, so that the combined resistance of the base resistor 39 and the compensating resistor 57 is exactly equal to the resistance that the termister 28 has at normal temperature, or 37 C.
On the other hand, the resistor 58 is preferably given a value of about 1400 ohms and the compensating resistor 56 a value between 0 and 200 ohms, these values being chosen so that the total resistance of elements 56 and 58 is equal. at the maximum resistance of thermistor 28 at the lowest temperature that one wishes to record, the current passing through the measuring device 61 being zero at this low temperature, which makes it possible to use the full scale of the measuring device .
In general, a 0 to 1 milliampere ammeter with a resistance of about 100 ohms is suitable. The two resistors 56 and 60 can, for example, each have a resistance of about 1000 ohms. For this type of air-cooker, a 45 volt dry cell battery is suitable.
When the full scale of the ammeter is thus used for a given temperature scale, it is extremely desirable that the rectifier 64 be present in the circuit, so that if after measuring the temperature of a body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the temperature measuring head is removed to expose it to a lower ambient temperature, for example 21 C, no reverse current flows through the ammeter 61, thus avoiding any negative deviation detrimental to the instrument.
Of course, a suitable recording device can be substituted for the measuring devices 41 (FIG. 3) and 61 (FIG. 4) of the constructions shown. According to the invention, the head may also be provided with different types of probe 23, i.e. the probes may be made of glass or a plastic substance or they may receive various shapes for s 'adapt to different body cavities, etc ... They can be provided with an' aluminum sheath or other metallic sheath which protects them and increases their mechanical resistance.
The head or plug 22 may be larger or longer so as to ensure a good grip for the hand, or it may be given a different shape to prevent the insertion of the probe beyond the limit of said plug.
