Le dispositif comprend des moyens d'abrasion 12 prévus pour soumettre le revêtement primaire d'une fibre optique 24 à une abrasion déterminée, des moyens d'indentation 14, prévus pour soumettre la fibre 24 à une indentation déterminée, à travers le revêtement primaire ainsi abrasé, et des moyens 8 d'application d'une contrainte déterminée à la fibre, afin de savoir si elle se rompt ou ne se rompt pas sous l'effet de cette contrainte.
