Abstract

A hydraulic actuator for a high voltage electrical switch has a piston (16) coupled to a rod that connects with the switch. The piston is sealed by a Teflon (TM) ring (34) located by an internal 'O' ring of flexible material (33). At the end of the piston is reduced diameter section (24) that locates in a bore with controlled clearance. As the piston moves to the end of the stroke the reduced section provides controlled cushioning to reduce the speed to zero without input. Due to the high velocity a bronze backing ring (41) with grooves (42,43) is used to protect the piston seals.
