Abstract

The present invention relates to a packaging tray, essentially for packing juice-releasing foodstuffs such as animal produce for example. This tray is characterised in that the perforations 3 of its bottom 2 have a size of the order of 1 mm<2> and are preferably from 350 to 400 per dm<2> in number, and the space between the two walls of the bottom of the tray, which contains an absorbent material 4, is calculated so that this absorbent material 4 is surrounded by a sufficient layer of air, even after reaching its maximum level of absorption, which therefore enables it to swell freely, resulting in an increase in its liquid-retaining capacity.

Description

The present invention relates to a packaging tray for packaging primarily food products releasing juice, designed to allow the absorption and effective elimination of this juice, often of an unappetizing color. This is particularly important in the case of packages containing animal products.

The trays existing until now manufactured by compression molding of three sandwich layers, namely: a perforated upper layer, an absorbent middle layer and a lower layer which, like the upper layer, should be little or no affected by the liquid content of food. This formulation, however, was found to be insufficiently capable of absorbing the flowing liquid, the color of which furthermore showed unsightly through the perforations.

The tray according to the invention on the other hand makes it possible to completely eliminate these drawbacks. This tray comprises a double bottom made of plastic material impermeable to liquids, of which that which is in contact with the food products has perforations of the order of 1 mm 2, preferably 350-400 per dm 2. Furthermore, the space between the two walls of the bottom of the bar omette, which contains an absorbent material, is calculated so that this absorbent material is always surrounded by a sufficient layer of air, even after having reached its maximum absorption rate, which therefore allows it to swell freely, resulting in an increase in its liquid retention capacity. This same tray is also characterized by the fact that the perforated surface on which the foodstuffs rest , is smooth and that its outer bottom has several hollows separated by transverse grooves projecting upwards, the role of the grooves being primarily to serve as a support for the absorbent material and that of the hollows to collect the excess liquid not absorbed. By this formula, developed following long tests with different types of food products, it was possible to achieve a balivage ia both hygienic and aesthetic, perfectly functional in terms of absorbing the juice of the characterized food. by an abundant discharge.

An embodiment of the present invention will be described below, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended drawing in which
FIG. 1 is a perspective view from above of a tray with a cutaway at the location of one of its angles.

Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the tray.

Figures 3a and 3b are sectional views of the tray, respectively along the two axes b-bl and a-al indicated in Figure 2.

Figures 4a and 4b are sectional views of the tray similar to those of Figures 3a and 3b but with in addition its perforated inner bottom and the layer of absorbent material.

In the drawing, the tray is designated by 1, the hollows in the bottom by 6 and the grooves projecting upwards by 5. These grooves serve at the same time as a support for the absorbent material 4 and as separations for the hollows 6 provided to collect in the extreme cases the excess liquid rejected by the foodstuffs, the latter resting on the smooth bottom 2, provided with a large number of fine perforations 3, this bottom 2 having a hard surface layer approved for its use in contact with love. The fixing points of the inner bottom 2, consisting of a removable plate are designated by 7, this bottom being glued, by means of hot-melt adhesive, to the outer bottom of the tray 1. By way of example of plastic material for the tray l, it is possi-bie to consider expanded polystyrene, and for the outer bottom 2 of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A suitable absorbent material may furthermore consist of several layers of household paper, preferably 15 in number, or several sheets of cellulose.
