Abstract

The method consists in reeling the length of optical fibre 8, corresponding to the reserve provided, around a drum 3 whose diameter is in relation to the maximum curvature allowed by the characteristics of the fibre and then in allowing it to relax by itself within the limits imposed by the walls of the device which serves to house it. This device is in the form of a case 1, 2 comprising a central portion occupied by the drum 3 and an eccentric spindle 7 around which it can pivot in order to be released from the neighbouring cases and thus to become accessible. A removable individual lid can be provided for easy access to the reserve fibre or for ensuring its retention in the storage state. The invention has one particular application in distribution frames of telephone central offices using connections via fibre-optic cables.

Description

The present invention relates to a method used in the connection of optical fibers to constitute and store a section of fiber in reserve as well as the device making it possible to implement the proposed method.

The video communications network makes extensive use of fiber optic cables to convey its information to user facilities whose terminal service can only be carried out after appropriate distribution of char. This distribution takes place in distribution centers where the stirring of the fibers concretely results in their connection to connection devices specially designed for optical fibers. However, the connection of optical fiber cables poses problems that did not exist with metal wire cabals. Indeed, these fibers are fragile and brittle so that not only should they not be bent, but the curvatures that 'they are imposed must never be less than a radius determined by the manufacturer. In addition, during the operations of connection, disconnection or reconnection of an optical fiber, one of the difficulties encountered lies in the risk of accidental breakage of the fiber, a risk that even today it is not yet possible to completely rule out . It is therefore advisable to keep in reserve a sufficient length of fiber to allow carrying out the necessary interventions and to remedy any broken fiber.

Consequently, the object of the invention is to propose a simple and economical method for constituting and storing a section of optical fiber serving as a reserve, while ensuring easy handling, mechanical protection and respecting the minimum radius of curvature of the fiber in order to maintain good quality transmission characteristics.

To do this, the invention proposes winding the length of fiber corresponding to the reserve on a cylindrical support having a radius at least equal to the minimum radius required, then using the memory property of the optical fibers which tend always take up a straight position to let the fiber relax itself within the limits imposed by the walls of the device which serves as its housing. This device is thus in the form of a shoemaker whose walls determine these limits and whose central portal is occupied by said cylindrical support.

But the device must also allow easy access and manipulation of the optical fiber. However, in the distribution centers, the optical fiber connectors are close to each other so that the same is true of devices housing the fiber sections in reserve which correspond to them respectively. Also, so that the fiber is easily accessible, the device of the invention comprises an eccentric opening serving as a housing for an axis common to a dreary set of such devices; in this way, it suffices to pivot the device on the fiber of which one wishes to intervene to free it from its neighbors and so that the fiber which it accommodates is of easy access and manipulation. A removable cover can be provided to perfect maintaining and protecting the fiber in its reserve device.

The various objects and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description which will now be given, by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the appended figure which represents a set of devices for optical fiber reserves and, more particularly, two devices illustrating the method recommended by the invention for constituting the sections of fiber in reserve.

As can be seen in the figure, the set of devices consists of identical shoemakers similar to shoemakers 1 and 2.

Each of these shoemakers is formed by a bottom and four walls, its central part being occupied by a drum 3 whose radius is at least equal to the minimum radius of curvature acceptable by the fibers so that they retain their nominal transmission characteristics. Two openings 4 and 5 are provided in each case to allow respectively the introduction of the fiber from the cable 6 into the case and its exit to the corresponding connector; their oblong shape reduces the friction of the edges of the opening on the fiber during the operation of the shoemaker.

Un couvercle individuel peut être prévu pour chaque bottier mais, étant donné qu'ils sont juxtopo- sés, le fond de l'un sert de couvercle à son voisin de sorte qu'il suffit d'un seul couvercle pour le bottier d'extrémité de l'ensemble, en l'occurrence pour le bottier 2.One of the angles of the latter has an orifice in which is housed the axis 7 around which each bootmaker can pivot so as to occupy the position illustrated by bootmaker 1 or that of case 2. An individual cover can be provided for each bootmaker but , since they are juxtaposed, the bottom of one serves as a cover for its neighbor so that a single cover is sufficient for the end case of the assembly, in this case for the boot maker 2.

The method of the invention for constituting the reserve section of optical fiber of each connector therefore consists in pivoting the box which corresponds to it around the axis 7 so as to release it from its neighbors in order to bring it into the position of bootmaker 1 in the figure. The appropriate optical fiber 8, coming from the cable 6, is then introduced through the opening 4 inside the housing. It is wrapped one or more times around the drum 3 according to the desired fiber reserve, then it is taken out of the bolt mill through the opening 5 over a length at least equal to that necessary for connecting the fiber with the optical connector.

The bootmaker is then brought back into the position of its neighbors by pivoting around the axis 7. This is then -that is to say as soon as the part 9 of the fiber is no longer subjected to the traction exerted by the operator- that we take advantage of the fact that an optical fiber always tends to be straight.

Indeed, it is noted that there is a free space between the periphery of the drum 3 and the walls of the case so that, as soon as the part 9 of the fiber is no longer subjected to a traction, the turns wound on the drum 3 relax until they abut against the walls of their casing, as illustrated by the case 2. The operations of connection between the fiber and the connector can now be carried out; it will be noted in this regard that the initial length 9 of the fiber outside the case is not critical provided that it is sufficient to allow the withdrawal of fiber towards the inside of the case, withdrawal which occurs when the turns around the drum 3 to relax ; moreover, these loops being relaxed, it is always possible to pull on the part. 8 ′ of the fiber to be joined to gain the necessary length.

If, for technical or accidental reasons, the connection has to be redone, depending on the length of fiber required, the 9 'part can be pulled a few centimeters. If this length is insufficient, the bootmaker concerned is pivoted around the axis 7 to bring it into the bootmaker position 1. This maneuver causes the turns to tighten around the drum 3 in the case where the end of the fiber 9 'is trapped in a fixed position. One then releases one of the turns wound around the drum or relaxed around it, turn which, as the case may be, can therefore relax between the latter and the walls of the shoemaker. As we have seen previously, the operator then brings the case back to the position of its neighbors and the new connection of the fiber can occur.

Other identical connection maneuvers are therefore possible as long as there is fiber wound around the drum 3. The reserve possibilities are obviously exhausted when the optical fiber passes through the housing passing directly from the opening 4 to the opening 5.

It is obvious that the above description has been given only by way of nonlimiting example and that other variants can be envisaged without departing from the scope of the invention.
