Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a connection box for fiber optic cables. The word box must be considered here in its broadest sense and includes any rigid container intended to receive fiber optic connections, waterproof or not, pressurizable or not, in the form of a buried pot, wall box, street box or cupboards and all sizes.
One of the difficulties encountered with the operations of connecting an optical fiber, either to make a non-removable splice from the end of one fiber to another, or to mount a removable connector on the end of a fiber, is the risk of fiber breakage during the operation. Currently, this risk cannot be completely ruled out. In the event of accidental breakage of an optical fiber in the vicinity of its end, if the available fiber length is no longer sufficient, it is necessary either to change the entire fiber, or to make an additional splice, which is costly and inconvenient.
In order to eliminate in practice the drawbacks of a fiber break during a connection in a box, in accordance with the present invention, means are provided in the box to facilitate the movement of a reserve of wire while respecting the radius of curvature. minimum fiber needed for good quality transmission.
Advantageously, a connection box according to the present invention comprises inside at least one fiber winding drum, having a radius greater than or equal to the minimum radius required.
Advantageously, the box has a clear connection area, with a member such as a comb, ladder, self-adhesive surface, etc., for fixing the fibers or the connections inside the box. In an advantageous embodiment of the. present invention, the fixing member is disposed inside the drum.
Other characteristics of the invention will appear during the description which follows, given by way of nonlimiting example with reference to the attached drawings and which will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.

The box of Figure 1 has a bottom 11, with an edge 12, perforated as appropriate for the passage of targets and a cover, not shown, which can be hinged, nested, snapped, or fixable in any suitable way. The box can be waterproof. Waterproof cable entries and tight covers are well known and do not
present nothing particular in the application to the box of the present invention. The box is characterized by a hollow drum 13 of radius adapted to optical fibers. A cable 14 held by a suitable cable clamp 15 is stripped and the individual fibers are wound around the drum to constitute, with an adequate radius of curvature, a reserve of fiber. A fixing member 17 of individual fibers, or pairs of fibers, is placed in the center of the drum 13. This means can be a comb 21 (FIG. 5), a ladder 22 (FIG. 6) or any other suitable means such as a plate filled with a self-adhesive layer on the surface, an adhesive of the "Velcro" type, etc. In the following description, the fixing member will be designated comb for simplicity, but it is understood that this designation covers all appropriate means. Individual cables 25a, 25b, 25c 25f> whose function is to burst the fibers of the cable 14 for different uses, are fixed at their entry into the box by suitable cable clamps 26a, .... 26f.
Les fibres 25 sont également enroulées autour du tambour 13.The fibers 25 are also wound around the drum 13.
The drum may include perforations 28a, ..... 28f to allow the passage of the individual fibers 25 or the fibers 16 of the cable 14 in the center of the drum. It is also possible to arrange the ends of the fibers over the edge of the hollow drum 13. In the interior of the drum, the fibers 16 are connected to the fibers 25, either by non-removable splices, or by removable connectors, the connections which may be different depending on the needs of the assembly and the installations concerned. The number of fibers shown is not limiting. If during a connection operation, a fiber is broken, or if a connection must be modified, it is enough to unroll the fiber in question to make the connection again. By providing a few turns for each fiber, we are in practice completely safe from the unpleasant situation in which a fiber would be too short to make the connection.
FIG. 2 shows in plan view, by way of example, a connection box 31 of two cables 32 and 33, with a hollow drum 34 and a comb 35.
FIG. 3 represents a box 41 into which a cable 42 of n optical fibers arrives. I1 leaves a cable 43 of n-4 fibers while four fibers 44a, 44b, 44c and 44d are stitched on the cable 42 for distribution. The fibers of the cable 43 can for example be connected to those of the cable 42 by non-removable splices while the fibers 44 can be provided with removable connectors. Depending on the number of fibers, two drums 45, 46 may be provided, the drum 45 for the fibers of the cable 42 and the drum 46 for the others. In this example, the comb 47 is arranged between the drums.
FIG. 4 schematically represents a large box 51 for connecting two large cables 52 and 53 with four hollow drums 54 each comprising a comb 55 inside. Instead of a large cable 52 or 53, there may be several small ones.
In the same way, a cabinet can be produced with series of drums arranged on parallel trays. There may be several dozen drums. The combs can be in the center of the drums, as in Figures 1, 2- and 4, or sideways as in Figure 3.
The drums can have a retaining collar 61 like the drum 62 in FIG. 7 and in this case, it preferably has perforations 63 for the passage of the fibers. It is also possible to provide tabs 70 (FIG. 3) distributed around the periphery of the drums to prevent the turns of fibers from escaping.
Boxes or cabinets can be molded plastic, cast iron or sheet metal, depending on the applications and service locations.
It goes without saying that the embodiments described are only examples and that it would be possible to modify them in particular by substitution of technical equivalents, without departing from the scope of the invention.
