Description
COMPOSITION D1 INITIATION SENSIBLE A LA PERCUSSION ET PROCEDE DE PREPARATION
Le secteur technique de la présente invention est celui des compositions d'initiation sensibles à la percussion destinées par exemple a équiper les tettes de fusées percutantes.PERCUSSION-SENSITIVE INITIATION COMPOSITION AND PROCESS FOR PREPARING THE SAME
The technical field of the present invention is that of percussion-sensitive initiation compositions intended for example to equip the teats with percussive rockets.
The percussive rocket heads intended to ensure the initiation of releasing explosive or detonating delay or instant comprise an initiation composition or primer, sensitive to the penetration of a tip of striker with more or less sharp end. Under the effect of this percussion, this composition decomposes detonating or exploding very strongly depending on the nature of the explosive used.
The initiating compositions exist in similar forms and belong to two distinct families, a first family which has no priming power and thus serves either to initiate a delay or a composition effect spec al, or to initiate the detonation provided to add to its suite a priming element generally consisting of lead azide; the second family has sufficient priming power to directly initiate the detonation of a relay without requiring an intermediate composition.
To the first family belong the compositions based on basic lead styphnate called "NOL 130" in the USA, lead dinitrororesorcinate called "L mixture" or RD 1651 in GREAT BRITAIN or lead thiocyanate in FRANCE.
To the second family belong the compositions based on primary explosives such as lead azide with addition of tetrazene, mainly used in France.
In all cases, these compositions, which are, moreover, very sensitive, have the disadvantage of not being able to withstand storage at an average temperature of above 750 ° C. for periods longer than a few days and not being able to withstand the temperature spikes either. the order of 100 to 120 C, for periods longer than a few hours, conditions that are frequently encountered in places of storage or use of ammunition equipped with these primers.
By way of indication, mention may be made of US Pat. No. 3,634,1552, French Patent No. 386,505, which describes conventional initiating compositions.
French Patent No. 2,309,493 describes mainly a process for robbing primary explosives and generally discusses the possibility of preparing primers from copper chlorotetrazolate, oxidants and reductants. However, it is above all to facilitate the handling of primary explosives by coating them with a binder; moreover, no priming composition is proposed.
More recently, it has been shown in the ERDE 1975 (Conference on Research in Primary Explosive) that the mercuric salt of 5-nitrotetrazole can replace lead azide in priming compositions. This is a theoretical study that offers no priming composition.
The detonation initiation compositions are characterized by percussion sensitivity, heat stability, and priming capability of a secondary explosive. Conventional compositions based on tetrazene have good sensitivity and good priming power but have the disadvantage of an alteration of these properties under the action of temperature. Conventional compositions based on lead thiocyanate have a good sensitivity which is not altered by temperature but it does not have a priming power; they require the introduction into the pyrotechnic chain of an element generally consisting of lead azide.
The object of the present invention is to provide a very sensitive percussion initiation composition, at least as sensitive as the conventional compositions mentioned above, but whose properties are preserved under severe environmental conditions.
The invention therefore relates to an initiating composition endowed with a high thermal stability sensitive to percussion and comprising a primary explosive and a sensitization additive, characterized in that it comprises 40 to 95% by weight of an explosive. tetrazole ring, 2.5 to 40% by weight of an oxidant and 2.5 to 40% by weight of a reducing agent.
The primary explosive can be represented by 5-nitrotetrazole, the mercury or silver salt of 5-nitrotetrazole, azotetrazole of neutral or basic argue or lead, halogenated tetrazoles and their salts, or a mixture of them.
The oxidant may be represented by chlorate or potassium perchlorate, strontium or barium, lead or manganese dioxide, potassium permanganate, sodium or potassium dichromate or a mixture thereof, and the reducer by antimony sulphide, lead thiocyanate, titanium, zirconium, the standard or a mixture thereof.
Advantageously, the initiator composition according to the invention may comprise:
40 to 80% by weight of mercury salt of 5-nitrotetrazole,
35% by weight of potassium chlorate,
- its 18% by weight of lead thiocyanate,
3 to 128 by weight of antimony sulphide.
A result obtained by the composition according to the invention resides in the fact that it has excellent properties of thermostability while retaining its sensitivity to initiation even after a long stay in a severe environment.
The preparation of an initiator composition according to the invention does not present any particular difficulties. The compounds as commercially available are used. The primary explosive is in the form of a fine powder which is preferably sieved at about 0.2 mm. As an indication we can do it as follows
- In a rotary mixer for the pyrotechnic compositions and having the necessary safety devices, the following ingredients, which have been previously dried and screened without this order being imperative: primary explosive then the reducing agent and finally the oxidant, are introduced successively.
After suitable homogenization, a specific charge of the mixture obtained is introduced by a manual or mechanical unitary or multiple process into stainless steel miniature detonator cells having an internal diameter of approximately 3.8 mm, and then a blast disc is placed. in paper or plastic fiber and each load is compressed with a force of about 300 daN.
The detonators thus constructed can be initiated by percussion through the obtwzation disk with the aid of a tapered end steel tip.
The following examples illustrate the composition according to the invention.
EXEMPLE b
EXAMPLE b
According to the mode taught above, a first series of initiators according to the invention having the following composition is produced.
- 758 by mass of mercury salt of 5-nitrotetrazole,
- 14% by weight of potassium chlorate,
- 7% by weight of lead thiocyanate,
- 48 by mass of antamony sulphide.
In the same manner, another series of conventional initiators containing an initiator composition containing 95% by mass of lead azide and 5% of tetrazene is produced.
1 - stockage ordinaire a température ambiante a 20 C environ pen
dant 15 jours;
2 - stockage isotherme a 750C pendant 15 jours;
heures a + 740C.These two sets of initiators are subject to the following three tests
1 - ordinary storage at room temperature at about 20 ° C.
15 days;
2 - isothermal storage at 750C for 15 days;
3 - tests of 10 36-hour climatic cycles with 12
hours at + 740C, climb in 2 hours at + 100 C and stay at 4
hours at this temperature, descent in 1 hour at -540c and
stay of 14 hours at this temperature then rise in 3
hours at + 740C.
The six groups of firing initiators are then tested on a falling sheep with initiation by a frustoconical striker propelled by a ball of 3.2 g falling from a variable height according to the sequential method of Bruceton to determine the sensitivity to the percussion. In addition, the apparatus comprises a base for estimating the ignition power by detonation, behind a variable aluminum barrier, a load of 50 mg of pentrite whose regime is verified by drilling or the non-penetration of a 2 mm thick steel control plate.
The results obtained are given in the table below in height of fall with a probability of explosion of 0.5 for the sensitivity, and in limiting thickness of aluminum barrier for the starting power with respect to the pentrite.

It can be seen from this table that the primers according to the invention retain practically their sensitivity and power characteristics after each of the tests, whereas the conventional primers are highly degraded, especially in sensitivity.
EXEMPLE 2
A third series of initiators according to the invention having the following composition is produced according to the mode previously taught.
50% by weight of mercury salt of 5-nitrotetrazole,
- 29% by weight of potassium chlorate
- 14% by weight of lead thiocyanate,
- 7% by weight of antimony sulphide.
- 10% en masse de pentrite (PETN).In the same way, a fourth series of conventional initiators of preferably
25% by weight of lead thiocyanate,
- 13% by weight of antimony sulphide,
- 52% by weight of potassium chlorate,
- 10% by weight of pentrite (PETN).
These two sets of initiators are subjected to the three tests described in Example 1 above. the sensitivity measurements being made in the same way. The results are collated in the following table (value in mm)

<tb> Esais <SEP> after <SEP> primers <SEP> invention <SEP> primers <SEP> classical <SEP> of

It can be seen that the initiators according to the invention produce, in a very short time, a deflagration similar to those which are necessary at the head of certain pyrotechnic rings such as those with a short delay, for example. They have a very good sensitivity that is little changed after each test unlike conventional primers that provide very dispersed results.
