Abstract

The invention relates to a method enabling, in a single operation, a plane surface, even porous or uneven, to be coated with a film of resin or of lacquer having a glossy final state without any defects. The operation consists in pouring over the plate 1 to be coated, previously inclined and surrounded by a sealing member 3, a predetermined quantity of the selected substance 4, for example an epoxy resin, and in progressively pressing, with the aid of a polished plate 6 such that the resin spreads out over the entire surface, removing the air in front of it via the vent 8. After demoulding, the surface of the resin 4, spread out and cured, has the same polish (gloss) as the surface of the plate 6 serving to press it. There is thus obtained, in a single operation, that which would have required several operations using conventional methods.

Description

The brilliance of the objects we use in everyday life is often sought after for its mais aspect also because it provides the assurance of good protection of the material it covers.

Indeed the shine could be defined by an absence of porosity and it is the latter which promotes the degradation of the material by letting the air and humidity penetrate.

The solution usually used to eliminate or limit this defect is to cover the material to be protected with a film of resin or varnish.

The application of these products is carried out, as the case may be, with a brush, a pad, a spray gun, a dip, electrostatically, by casting, with a curtain machine, etc.

When looking for a perfect final surface condition all these processes have in common the need for one or more additional operations, in particular polishing and sanding.

In addition, the few microns of varnish or resin thickness applied each time with these means (except, however, for casting) means that several successive layers are often used.

On the contrary, with the process recommended here, a single operation is sufficient to obtain a perfect surface whatever the porosity of the support.

The accompanying drawing is a sectional view of the simplified apparatus for glazing.

As shown, in FIG. 1, the plate or plate 1 to be glazed is placed in an inclined position on the plate 2 of a press. It is surrounded by a bead 3 of rubber protruding from the upper edge of the plate 1 in order to provide a cavity 4 in the lower part where a quantity of deter will be poured; mined with resin or varnish previously sprayed
The sheet 5 resting on the edge of the bead 3 is intended to "stamp n its glazed surface appearance with resin in 4 once it has spread and hardened. It is made of a synthetic material which does not react chemically on contact with resin or varnish solvents. Stainless steel total, laminates, etc. can also be used.

The thickness must be such that the sheet 5 is rigid enough not to bend too much under the effect of its weight in the center of the plate and yet flexible enough to allow in-line molding after the resin has hardened.

Under the pressure of the plate 6 of the press already mentioned, the resin placed in 4 spreads gradually over the entire surface of the plate 1 to be glazed. Simultaneously the bead 3 of rubber compresses while ensuring sealing.

Depending on the shape of the plate 1, it is sometimes useful to use, to ensure greater pressure of the bead 3 on the edge of the plate 1, a steel foil belt 7 which holds the outer face of the bead 3. In other cases the belt 7 is replaced by a more rigid flat iron which can streak straight or shaped.

The bead 3, in its highest part, is started by a transverse groove 8 allowing the compressed air created by the pressure of the plate 6 to be evacuated.

After the resin or varnish has hardened, the rinsing step consists in removing the interlayer sheet 5 which leaves the image of its gloss on the surface of the plate 1.

The applications of this process are quite wide5; they range from the coating of the boards used in cabinetmaking to the glazing of the table tops of pedestal tables.
