Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a device for detecting the flow of current in one or more conductors, a device which does not require auxiliary power sources for its operation. The detection device according to the invention is capable of providing either a continuous or intermittent light and / or acoustic indication when a current flows in one or more conductors, and is also capable of indicating the open or "off" state or a switch is closed or "on", in which case the indication is given when the switch is closed. In this respect, the invention does not cover devices which operate according to an entirely different principle, in particular those which provide a opposite indication, that is, for example, in the case of a switch, which indicates that this switch is open. Detection devices of the type to which the invention relates generally comprise a transformer designed to detect the circulation of a current in one or more conductors. The signal appearing at the transformer secondary is suitably amplified and processed by an electronic network in order to activate a circuit capable of providing, for example, a light and / or sound indication.
The electronic network and the actuation circuit both require an individual supply which weighs down the whole system. In addition, there is not always such a power source at the place where the current that we want to detect flows, or it can be difficult to connect to a power circuit.
In this case, the use of storage batteries is necessary.
The use of auxiliary power sources results, in all cases, in a certain energy consumption not only in the presence of the current that one wants to detect but also in the absence of it.
It is easy to understand that all the above drawbacks exist as well when the actuator varies a physical quantity (for example the light or sound intensity) proportional to the intensity of the detected current (electronic ammeter), as in the case where the actuator operates only on two levels, that is to say that, below a given value of the current to be detected, the actuator does not provide any indication, while above this value, it gives an indication.
The detection device according to the invention for detecting the circulation of a current according to the invention makes it possible to avoid all of the above drawbacks in that it does not require power and takes the energy necessary for the indication directly of the current to be detected.
The detection device of the invention comprises a transformer designed to detect the flow of a current in one or more conductors and to send the developed signal to its secondary to a rectifier - which could be associated with a voltage amplifier - in order to charge a capacitor mounted downstream. When a given voltage - corresponding to the value of the current which it is desired to detect - is reached at the terminals of said capacitor, the latter discharges through a network arranged downstream, in a light and / or acoustic signaling device.
Alternatively, the energy accumulated in the capacitor could be used to power electronic circuits.
I.Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawing in which
Fig. I is a block diagram of the circuit associated with the detection device according to the invention,
Fig. 2 and 3 schematically represent two ways of connecting the detection device to a conductor in which it is desired to detect the passage of a current, and
Fig. 4 is a diagram on which the components of the block diagram of FIG. 1 have been sketched.
Referring now to the block diagram of FIG. I, we see a conductor F in which it is desired to detect the passage of a current.
The reference T designates a toroidal transformer designed to detect the flow of current in the conductor F and to trigger - by means of components mounted downstream and described below - an indicator light and an acoustic indicator which have been represented respectively in the form of a light-emitting diode L and a vibrator B in FIG. I. Downstream of the transformer T is a first network R comprising a rectifier - which can be associated with a voltage amplifier - a capacitor C and a second network S which may include one or more solid components such as, for example, a static switch.
S relié à la diode electroluminescente L et au vibreur B.The signal appearing on the secondary of the transformer T which is generated by the passage of the current in the conductor F, charges the capacitor C by the network R When the desired voltage - corresponding to the value of the current which one wishes to detect - is reached at ends of capacitor C, the latter is suddenly discharged by the network
S connected to the light-emitting diode L and to the vibrator B.
The network S remains open as long as the voltage across the terminals of the capacitor C has not reached the preset value and when this voltage has been reached at the ends of the capacitor C, the network S suddenly changes from the open state to the state closed, thus causing the capacitor C to charge.
As soon as the capacitor C has discharged, the network S returns to the open state and the capacitor begins to charge again.
Thus, the operating mode obtained is advantageously of the intermittent type, that is to say that the light from the diode
L flashes while the sound emitted by vibrator B is of the pulsed type.
In other words, as long as the intensity of the current which one wishes to detect remains below a certain threshold, no indication is emitted but as soon as this threshold is reached, intermittent signaling is obtained at time intervals which gradually decreases as the threshold value of the current is exceeded, because, as the intensity of the current increases, the capacitor C charges more quickly, thus increasing more quickly the output signal of the transformer T.
The detection device according to the invention can be manufactured inexpensively for both domestic and industrial uses in a very simple manner. Figures 2 and 3 show two examples of this device, highlighting the simplicity of installation thereof.
The device of FIG. 2 does not require any fixing means for the 7th conductor concerned, since it suffices to pass this conductor F through the holes provided for this purpose in the device.
By cons, in the case of the device of Figure 3, the conductor was cut into two parts and the resulting ends were fixed to the device by clamping screws.
The detection device according to the invention lends itself to numerous applications.
For example, it can be used to provide the user with an indication that the upper limits of a tolerable overload are approaching, so that the user himself can take the necessary action (e.g. disconnecting a load which is not essential) before a main switch or the circuit breaker installed by the qualified electric power distributor is triggered by the overload.
In addition, it can be used to indicate whether the switch connected to conductor F is "open" or "close" an obvious indication being given whether the switch is open or closed.
Since the signaling is preferably of the intermittent type, this makes it possible to see the light indication at a distance of several meters and to hear the acoustic indication distinctly in an apartment, even when the doors are closed.
Finally, the light emitted by the light-emitting diode L and the sound of the vibrator B could activate a signaling circuit, for example, a siren, by means of a photoelectric or acoustic coupling device. However, in this case, an auxiliary power source is required.
Remote transmission of the indicator signal could also be obtained using either conventional transmission means or a fiber optic system.
A possible application of the device according to the invention which is particularly advantageous is its use for supplying electronic circuits located downstream of the capacitor C with the energy coming from a single conductor crossed by a current. I1 thus becomes, for example, possible to power any actuation device, even when the switch concerned is closed ("on") it being understood that when this switch is open ("off") a certain voltage is available to its ends.
Referring now to Figure 4 - in which the outlines of the components of the block diagram in Figure
I have been traced; a non-restrictive example of the numerical values of said components will be described below, the symbols of some of them having also been indicated.
R1, R2, SBS et SCR de la figure 4 forment le réseau S de la figure I.It should be noted that the capacitor CI and the diodes D and D2 of the diagram in FIG. 4 form a voltage rectifier and an amplifier which constitute the network R of the block diagram of FIG. I, while the components
R1, R2, SBS and SCR in Figure 4 form the network S in Figure I.
- Exemple

D1 et D2 sont des diodes 1 N 4003 ou des ponts. D1 and D2 are 1 N 4003 diodes or bridges.
C = 10 F, 50 volts continus - tolérance 20 %. C = 10 F, 50 volts DC - tolerance 20%.

R2 = 33 k # 0.25 W - tolerance 10%

It goes without saying that numerous modifications can be made to the device for detecting the passage of a current in one or more conductors in accordance with the invention, the embodiment described having only the character of an example in no way limiting to which many modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
