Abstract

The present invention relates to a vacuum manufacturing process for sports boards, of the type comprising a core having the shape of the board produced in an open- or closed-cell foam, such as polyurethane foam, which core is reinforced by an envelope giving it flexibility and rigidity, characterised in that a very strong homogeneous finished product is obtained by carrying out under vacuum the assembly of the various constituent elements: core 1, support fabric 3, binder and coating 5.

Description

The present invention relates to a vacuum manufacturing process for sports boards. The name "sport boards" naturally designates surfboards, windsurfers and skateboards.

Various methods of manufacturing sports boards are known, the most common of which consists of two shells of a polyester laminate inside which a polyurethane foam is injected. In some manufacturing, the polyurethane core is reinforced by a frame, either of wooden slats, or of metal, in order to give the board a certain rigidity.

The boards produced by these means are heavy and ineffective.

The object of the invention is to remedy these various inconveniences by producing a very resistant, lightweight sports board, the submerged face of which has a minimum of resistance to the liquid element, hence a gain in performance.

According to a characteristic of the invention, it is by assembling the various constituent elements of the board under vacuum that a very resistant homogeneous finished product is obtained.

According to a second characteristic of the invention, the core or core is cut to the shape of the board from a polyurethane bar. On this core is arranged in two parts, each part representing one of the faces of the board, a fabric soaked in an epoxy resin, to which is applied a veneer produced by sheets of wood, such as balsa.

This assembly is then enclosed in a sealed enclosure connected to a vacuum pump. When the suction is carried out under the effect of atmospheric pressure, the wood and its support are pressed against the core and closely follow the shape of said core.

After reaction of the constituent products, the pressure is restored and the same process is repeated for the second face of said board.

When these two operations are carried out, touch-ups are carried out before coating the two faces with a layer of epoxy resin, which resin is then sanded and glazed.

Various other characteristics and advantages of the present invention emerge from the detailed description which follows, with reference to the appended drawings, according to which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational section view of a sports board produced according to the invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a larger scale of the arrangement of the various constituent elements of the sports board.

Fig. 3 schematically represents the method of evacuating said sports board.

According to fig. 1 and 2, the sports board, in accordance with the invention, consists of a core or core 1, made of a foam with closed or open cells, such as polyurethane foam. This core is preformed by hand or planer in a loaf of this material.

This operation carried out, the shape of the board thus obtained is covered on a first face 2 by a fabric 3 soaked in epoxy resin 4, on which the veneer 5 is placed. This veneer is obtained by arrangement of balsa leaves or any other suitable woods.

This assembly is then placed in a plastic bag 6 (fig. 3), which is connected to a vacuum pump 7. When the vacuum pump 7 is started, the air contained in the plastic bag 6 is sucked in, the acting atmospheric pressure presses the wood and its fabric support to the desired shape.

After reaction of the products, the opening of the bag is carried out and the same process is repeated for the face 2 '.

The two faces thus covered are then touched up and coated with a layer of epoxy resin 8, which is then sanded and glazed by any appropriate means.

It is understood that the process and the product thus obtained relate only to the board and that on this board various fastening systems, arrangements, can be brought without departing from the scope of the present invention.
