Description
La présente invention concerne des compositions d'huile lubrifiante et
leur utilisation pour réduire la consommation de carburant dans des moteurs à combustion interne L'invention a plus particulièrement trait à des compositions d'huiles lubrifiantes moteur contenant des 1,2alcanediols boratés renfermant du soufre, comme agents
réducteurs de friction.
Devant la crise associée à la diminution des réserves de combustible fossile et l'ascension rapide des prix de ce combustible, beaucoup d'efforts ont été
déployés en vue de réduire la quantité de carburant con-
sommée par les moteurs de véhicules automobiles, etc. Ainsi, il est grandement nécessaire de trouver des lubrifiants qui réduisent la friction globale du moteur, en réduisant ainsi l'énergie nécessaire pour vaincre cette friction. Le brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amérique N O 4 201 684 enseigne des huiles lubrifiantes contenant des amides, esters ou ester- amides d'amines alkoxylées d'acides gras sulfurés, qui réduisent la friction entre des surfaces métalliques coulissantes dans des moteurs à
combustion interne.
Le brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amérique
N O 4 209 410 fait connaître des huiles lubrifiantes con-
tenant des sulfures d'hydroxyalkyle Il y est question
d'une amélioration, par les additifs, des propriétés anti-
usure des compositions résultantes.
Le brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amérique
N O 4 225 449 fait connaître des huiles lubrifiantes con-
tenant des hydrocarbylsulfonylalcanols aliphatiques ou hydrocarbylsulfinylalcanols aliphatiques qui réduisent la friction en améliorant l'économie de carburant de moteurs
à combustion interne.
Des compositions d'huile lubrifiante du type décrit dans le présent mémoire possèdent d'excellentes propriétés inhibitrices d'oxydation et de corrosion de même que d'excellentes propriétées de dispersion, d'usure
et de friction.
On vient de découvrir que la lubrification du carter d'un moteur à combustion interne avec une huile lubrifiante contenant des 1,2alcanediols sulfurés boratés
réduisait la consommation de carburant du moteur.
Conformément à la présente invention, il est
proposé des huiles lubrifiantes qui réduisent la fric-
tion entre des surfaces métalliques coulissantes dans le carter de moteurs à combustion interne La réduction de
friction est une conséquence de l'addition à l'huile lubri-
fiante de quantités efficaces d'un 1,2-alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre, de formule R-S-(CH 2)m CH-CH 2

dans laquelle R est un groupe alkyle contenant 5 à 30 ato-
mes de carbone et m est égal à 1 ou 2, et leurs mélanges.
De préférence, ledit groupe alkyle est linéaire et con-
tient peu ou pas de ramification, et m est égal à 1 R
contient très avantageusement 5 à 18 atomes de carbone.
D'autres additifs peuvent aussi être présents dans l'huile lubrifiante en vue d'obtenir un équilibre convenable de propriétés telles que dispersion, corrosion,
usure et oxydation, qui sont déterminantes pour le fonc-
tionnement correct d'un moteur à combustion interne.
Ainsi, une autre forme de réalisation de la présente invention est axée sur une huile lubrifiante formulée en vue de son utilisation dans le carter d'un
moteur à combustion interne, en vue de réduire-la consom-
mation de carburant dudit moteur, comprenant (a) une quantité dominante d'une huile de viscosité lubrifiante; et
(b) une quantité efficace de chacun des com-
posants suivants: 1 un alcénylsuccinimide ou -succinate ou leurs mélanges, 2 un sel de métal du Groupe II d'un acide dihydrocarbyldithiophosphorique, 3 un hydrocarbylsulfonate de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique ou des mélanges de ces composés, 4 un phénate alkylé de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique ou des mélanges de ces composés, et un 1,2- alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre, utilisé comme modificateur de friction, de la formule I
définie ci-dessus.
En outre, conformément à la présente invention, il est proposé un procédé pour réduire la consommation de carburant d'un moteur à combustion interne par traitement de ses surfaces mobiles avec l'huile lubrifiante contenant l'agent modificateur de friction boraté renfermant du soufre de formule I. L'addition de 0,1 à 5 % en poids, et notamment de 0,5 à 4 % en poids d'un 1,2-alcanediol boraté sulfuré de formule I à une huile lubrifiante moteu-r armiliore grandement
l'économie de carburant du moteur à combustion interne.
En particulier, des améliorations de la consommation de carburant d'environ 2 % en moyenne ont été observées dans des essais portant sur des moteurs L'amélioration de i 'économie de carburant peut être obtenue tant dans des moteurs à allumage par compression, c'est-à-dire des moteurs diesel,
que dans des moteurs à allumage par étincelles, c'est-à-
dire des moteurs à essence.
Les 1,2-alcanediols boratés contenant du soufre sont préparés par boratation d'un 1,2-alcanediol contenant du soufre de formule:

On peut conduire la réaction à une température comprise dans la plage de 60 à 135 C, en présence de tout
solvant organique convenable tel que le méthanol, le ben-
zène, les xylènes, le toluène, l'huile neutre, etc Si
le solvant ne forme pas d'azéotrope avec l'eau, on incor-
pore une quantité suffisante d'un agent formant un azéo-
trope pour éliminer l'eau par ébullition azéotrope.
Dans la formule I ci-dessus, R peut être un groupe alkyle à chaîne droite, à chaîne ramifiée, primaire, secondaire ou tertiaire Des exemples de groupes convenables
sont les groupes n-pentyle, n-octyle, n-dodécyle, 2-éthyl-
décyle, n-eicosyle, 1-éthyleicosyle, n-dodécyle, n-tri-
contyle, etc. Les composés préconisés de formule I sont ceux
dans lesquels R est un groupe alkyle contenant 5 à 18 ato-
mes de carbone et m est égal à 1.
Les 1,2-alcanediols contenant du soufre sont aisément préparés par des procédés classiques Par exemple,
un mercaptan de formule II, RSH dans laquelle R a la défini-
tion donnée ci-dessus, peut être amené à réagir avec un halogénure de dihydroxyalkyle de formule III X-(CH 2)m CH CH 2 III I Ill

Des composés dans lesquels m est égal à 1 peuvent aussi être préparés par réaction d'un mercaptan
de formule II avec le glycidol à environ 100 C en pré-
sence d'un catalyseur trialkylaminé tel que la triéthyl-
amine A titre de variante, ces derniers composés peuvent être préparés par réaction du mercaptide de potassium de l'alpha-thioglycérine avec l'iodure ou le bromure d'alkyle approprié conformément aux modes opératoires décrits par R L Shriner et collaborateurs dans J Am Chem Soc, 52, 2066 ( 1930) et par D David Lawson et collaborateurs
dans J Org Chen, 26, 615-16 (T 6 i 1}.
Des exemples de 1,2-alcanediols sulfurés appré-
ciés qui peuvent être boratés sont le 4-thia-1,2-hexadécane-
diol, le 5-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol, le 5-thia-1,2-hepta-
décanediol, le 4-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol et le 4-thia-
1,2-octadécanediol. Les huiles lubrifiantes utilisées dans le procédé de Il'invention contiennent une quantité dominante d'une huile lubrifiante et environ 0,10 à 5,0 % en poids
du 1,2-alcanediol sulfuré boraté de formule I, de préfé-
rence 0,5 à 4,0 % en poids et notamment 1 à 2 % en poids sur la base du poids de la composition totale La quantité optimale de 1,2-alcanediol sulfuré borate, dans ces plages,
varie légèrement selon l'huile de base et les autres addi-
tifs présents dans I'huile.
Des concentrés d'additifs sont également inclus dans le cadre de l'invention Dans l'additif sous la forme concentrée, le 1,2-alcanediol sulfuré boraté est présent

à une concentration allant de 5 à 50 % en pods Les compositions lubrifiantes sont priécnes par mélange, par des techniques classiques, dela ganiiti appropriée du 1,2-alcanediol sulfuré boraté désiré de formule I avec l'huile lubrifiante Lorsqu'on prxépare des concentrés, la quantité d'huile hydrocarboné est lmitée mais elle est suffisante pour dissoudre la quantité vou 3 me de 1,2-alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre l -t'
le concentré contient une quantité suffisante de 1,2-
alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre pour permettre la dilution subséquente avec une à dix fois plus d'hmile lubrifiante.
Comme autre forme de réalisation de l"'nvan-
tion, les huiles lubrifiantes auxquelles les l 2-alamne-
diols boratés sulfurés de formule I sont ajoutés c nmt LÀ-
nent un hydrocarbylsulfonate de métal alcalin ou de mtl
alcalino-terreux, un phénate de métal alcalin ou alca Jima-
terreux ou leurs mélanges, un dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate de métal du Groupe II et un alcénylsuccinimide ou -succmate
ou des mélanges de ces composés.
Les hydrocarbylsulfonates de métasum=lca Lii ou alcalino-terreux peuvent être un sulfonate de pétrole, des sulfonates aromatiques alkylés par voie de sytse ou des sulfonates aliphatiques tels que ceux gaui sont dérivés de polyisobutylène L'une des fonctions les pls importantes des sulfonates est leur action comme détezent et comme dispersant Ces sulfonates sont bien cous dans l'art antérieur Le groupe hydrocarbyle doit a r ma
nombre suffisant d'atomes de carbone pour rendoe la maiu-
cule de sulfonate soluble dans l'huile De prefveov: la-
portion hydrocarbyle a au moins 20 atomes de carbone et elle peut être aromatique ou aliphatique, mais ele est
ordinairement alkylaromatique On utilise très u& -
ment les sulfonates de calcium, magnésium ou-rt W
sont de caractère aromatique.
Certains sulfonates sont normaleieoet pÉilk E par sulfonation d'une fraction de pétrole portant L-=
aromatiques, ordinairement des groupes mono e L dla 1 fly-
benzène, puis formation du sel métallique de l'acide sul-
fonique obtenu D'autres matières de départ utilisées pour préparer ces sulfonates comprennent des benzènes alkylés
par voie de synthèse et des hydrocarbures aliphatiques pré-
parés par polymérisation d'une mono-oléfine ou d'une di- oléfine, par exemple un groupe polyisobutényle préparé par polymérisation d'isobutène Les sels métalliques sont formés directement ou par métathèse par des procédés bien connus. Les sulfonates peuvent être neutres ou rendus
surbasiques, leur indice de basicité atteignant ou dépas-
sant environ 400 L'anhydride carbonique est la matière le plus couramment utilisée pour produire les sulfonates basiques ou rendus surbasiques On peut utiliser des mélanges de sulfonates neutres ou rendus surbasiques Les sulfonates sont ordinairement utilisés de manière qu'ils
représentent 0,3 à 10 % en poids de la composition totale.
Les sulfonates neutres sont avantageusement présents en proportion de 0,4 à 5 % en poids de la composition totale
et les sulfonates rendus surbasiques sont présents en pro-
portion de 0,3 à 3 % en poids de la composition totale.
Les phénates destinés à être utilisés dans la présente invention sont des produits classiques qui sont les sels de métaux alcalins ou alcalinoterreux de phénols alkylés L'une des fonctions des phénates est leur action comme détergent et dispersant Entre autres choses, le phénate empêche le dépôt d'impuretés formé pendant le fonctionnement à haute température du moteur Les phénols
peuvent être mono-alkylés ou polyalkylés.
La portion alkyle du phénate d'alkyle est pré-
sente pour conférer au phénate la solubilité dans l'huile.
La portion alkyle peut provenir de sources naturelles ou
de sources synthétiques Des sources naturelles compren-
nent les hydrocarbures de pétrole tels que l'huile blanche
et la cire Etant dérivée du pétrole, la portion hydrocar-
bonée est un mélange de différents groupes hydrocarbyle, dont la composition particulière dépend de l'huile de base
qui est utilisée en particulier comme matière de départ.
Des sources synthétiques convenables comprennent divers alcènes et dérivés d'alcanes disponibles dans le commerce qui, lorsqu'on les fait réagir avec le phénol, donnent
un alkylphénol Des radicaux convenables obtenus compren-
nent les radicaux butyle, hexyle, octyle, décyle, dodécyle, hexadécyle, eicosyle, tricontyle, etc D'autres sources synthétiques convenables du radical alkyle comprennent
des polymères oléfiniques tels que polypropylène, poly-
butylène, polyisobutylène, etc. Le groupe alkyle peut être un groupe alkyle à chaîne droite ou à chaîne ramifiée, saturé ou non saturé (s'il n'est pas saturé, il ne contient de préférence pas plus de 2 et notamment pas plus d'un site de non-saturation oléfinique) Les radicaux alkyle contiennent généralement 4 à 30 atomes de carbone En général, lorsque le phénol est monoalkylé, le radical alkyle doit contenir au moins 8 atomes de carbone Le phénate peut éventuellement être sulfuré Il peut être neutre ou rendu surbasique et, dans ce dernier cas, son indice de basicité atteint ou dépasse 200 à 300 On peut utiliser des mélanges de phénates
neutres et rendus surbasiques.
Les phénates sont ordinairement présents dans
l'huile en proportion de 0,2 à 27 % en poids de la composi-
tion totale De préférence, les phénates neutres sont
présents en proportion de 0,2 à 9 % en poids de la composi-
tion totale et les phénates rendus surbasiques sont pré-
sents en proportion de 0,2 à 13 % en poids de la composi-
tion totale Les phénates rendus surbasiques sont très avantageusement présents en proportion de 0,2 à 5 % en poids de la composition totale Les métaux préférés sont
le calcium, le magnésium, le strontium ou le baryum.
On apprécie les alkylphénates sulfurés de métaux alcalino-terreux Ces sels sont obtenus par divers
procédés tels que le traitement du produit de neutralisa-
tion d'une base de métal alcalino-terreux et d'un alkyl-
phénol avec le soufre Le soufre, sous la forme élémentaire, est ajouté avantageusement au produit de neutralisation et amené à réagir à des températures élevées pour produire
l'alkylphénate sulfuré de métal alcalino-terreux.
Si l'on ajoute pendant la réaction de neutra-
lisation une plus grande quantité de base de métal alcalino-
terreux qu'il n'en est nécessaire pour neutraliser le phénol, on obtient un alkylphénate de métal alcalino-terreux sulfuré
basique (voir, par exemple, le procédé du brevet des Etats-
Unis d'Amérique N O 2 680 096) On peut obtenir une plus grande basicité en ajoutant de l'anhydride carbonique à
l'alkylphénate de métal alcalino-terreux sulfuré basique.
La base de métal alcalino-terreux en excès peut être ajoutée
après l'étape de sulfuration, mais on l'ajoute avantageuse-
ment en même temps que l'addition de la base de métal
alcalino-terreux pour neutraliser le phénol.
L'anhydride carbonique est la matière le plus couramment utilisée pour produire les phénates basiques
ou "rendus surbasiques" Un procédé dans lequel des alkyl-
phénates de métaux alcalino-terreux sulfurés basiques sont produits par addition d'anhydride carbonique est décrit
dans le brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amérique N O 3 178 368.
Les sels de métaux du Groupe II d'acides di-
hydrocarbyldithiophosphoriques déploient des propriétés anti-usure, antioxydantes et de stabilité thermique Les sels de métaux du Groupe Il d'acides phosphorodithiolques ont déjà été décrits On renvoie, par exemple, au brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amérique N O 3 390 080, colonnes 6 et 7, o ces composés et leur préparation sont décrits d'une manière générale Les sels de métaux du Groupe II des acides dihydrocarbyldithiophosphoriques que l'on peut utiliser dans la composition d'huile lubrifiante de la présente invention contiennent avantageusement environ 4 à environ 12 atomes de carbone dans chacun des radicaux hydrocarbyle et peuvent être égaux ou différents et de nature aromatique, alkylique ou cycloalkylique Des groupes hydrocarbyle appréciés sont des groupes alkyle contenant 4 à 8 atomes de carbone et sont représentés par
les groupes butyle, isobutyle, sec -butyle, hexyle, iso-
hexyle, octyle, 2-éthylhexyle, etc Les métaux qui con-
viennent à la formation de ces sels comprennent le baryum, le calcium, le strontium, le zinc et le cadmium, parmi
lesquels on préfère le zinc.
Le sel de métal du Groupe II d'un acide hydro-
carbyldithiophosphorique répond avantageusement à la for-
mule suivante:

Le sel dithiophosphorique est présent dans les compositions d'huile lubrifiante de l'invention en une quantité efficace pour inhiber l'usure et l'oxydation de
l'huile lubrifiante La quantité va d'environ 0,1 à envi-
ron 4 % en poids de la composition totale, le sel étant de préférence présent en une quantité allant d'environ 0,2 à environ 2,5 % en poids de la composition d'huile
lubrifiante totale La composition finale d'huile lubri-
fiante contient ordinairement 0,025 à 25 % en poids de
phosphore et de préférence 0,05 à 15 % en poids de phos-
phore. L'alcénylsuccinimide ou -succinate ou leurs mélanges sont présents de manière à agir, entre autres choses, comme dispersant et pour empêcher la formation de dépôts apparaissant au cours du fonctionnement du moteur Les alcénylsuccinimides et -succinates sont bien connus dans l'art antérieur Les alcénylsuccinimides sont le produit de réaction d'un anhydride succinique substitué
par une polyoléfine avec une amine, de préférence une poly-
alkylènepolyamine, et les alcénylsuccinates sont le pro-
duit de réaction d'un anhydride succinique à substituant
polyoléfinique avec des alcools, phénols et naphtols mono-
hydroxyliques et polyhydroxyliques, de préférence un alcool
polyhydroxylique contenant au moins trois radicaux hydroxy.
1 1 Les anhydrides succiniques substitués par une polyoléfine sont obtenus par réaction d'un polymère polyoléfinique
ou d'un dérivé de ce polymère avec l'anhydride maléique.
L'anhydride succinique ainsi obtenu est amené à réagir avec l'amine ou le composé hydroxylique La préparation des alcénylsuccinimides a été décrite de nombreuses fois dans l'art antérieur (voir, par exemple, les brevets des Etats-Unis d'Amérique N 3 390 082, N 3 219 666 et N 3 172 892) La préparation des alcénylsuccinates a été également décrite dans l'art antérieur (voir, par exemple, les brevets des Etats-Unis d'Amérique N 3 381 022 et
N 3 522 179).
On obtient des résultats particulièrement convenables avec les compositions d'huile lubrifiante de l'invention lorsque l'alcénylsuccinimide ou -succinate est un anhydride succinique à substituant polyisobutène d'une polyalkylènepolyamine ou, respectivement, d'un alcool polyhydroxylique. dride succinique à substituant polyisobutène.
Dans la préparation de l'alcénylsuccinimide, l'anhydride succinique substitué est amené à réagir avec
une polyalkylènepolyamine pour former le succinimide corres-
pondant Chaque radical alkylène de la polyalkylènepoly-

On peut faire réagir l'alcénylsuccinimide avec l'acide borique ou un composé similaire contenant du bore pour former les dispersants boratés que l'on peut utiliser dans la présente invention Les succinimides
boratés entrent dans la définition du terme "alcényl-
succinimide". Les alcénylsuccinates sont ceux que forme l'anhydride succinique défini ci-dessus avec des composés hydroxyliques qui peuvent être des composés aliphatiques
tels que des alcools monohydroxyliques et polyhydroxyli-
ques ou des composés aromatiques tels que des phénols et des naphtols Les composés hydroxyliques aromatiques à partir desquels les esters peuvent être obtenus sont illustrés par les exemples représentatifs suivants: phénol, bêta-naphtol, alpha-naphtol, crésol, résorcinol,
catéchol, p,p'-dihydroxybiphényle, 2-chlorophénol, 2,4-
dibutylphénol, phénol substitué par le tétramère de pro-
pène, didodécylphénol, 4,4 '-méthylène-bis-phénol, alpha-
* décyl-bêta-naphtol, phénol à substituant polyisobutène
(de poids moléculaire égal à 1000), produit de condensa-

monopropylique du diéthylène-glycol, l'éther monododécyli-
que du triéthylène-glycol, le mono-oléate d'éthylène-glycol,
le monostéarate de diéthylène-glycol, l'alcool sec -
pentylique, l'alcooltertio-butylique, le 5-bromododécanol, le nitrooctadécanol et le dioléate de glycérol Les alcools polyhydroxyliques contiennent avantageusement 2 à environ 10 radicaux hydroxy Ils sont illustrés, à titre d'exemples, par l'éthylène-glycol, le diéthylèneglycol,
le triéthylène-glycol, le tétra-éthylène-glycol, le di-
propylène-glycol, le tripropylène-glycol, le dibutylène-
glycol, le tributylène-glycol et d'autres alkylène-glycols dont le radical alkylène contient 2 à environ 8 atomes de
carbone D'autres alcools polyhydroxyliques utiles com-
prennent le glycérol, le mono-oléate de glycérol, l'éther monométhylique du glycérol, le pentaérythritol, l'acide 9,10-dihydroxystéarique, l'ester méthylique de l'acide
9,10-dihydroxystéarique, le 1,2-butanediol, le 2,3-hexane-
diol, le 2,4-hexanediol, le pinacol, l'érythritol, l'ara-
bitol, le sorbitol, le mannitol, le 1,2-cyclohexanediol et le xylèneglycol Des glucides tels que des sucres, des amidons, des celluloses, etcpeuvent de même donner des esters Les glucides peuvent être illustrés par un
glucose, le fructose, le saccharose, le rhamnose, le man-
nose, le glycéraldéhyde et le galactose.
Une classe d'alcools polyhydroxyliques par-
ticulièrement appréciée comprend ceux qui portent au
moins trois radicaux hydroxy, dont certains ont été esté-
rifiés avec un acide monocarboxylique ayant environ 8 à environ 30 atomes de carbone tel que l'acide octanoique, l'acide oléique, l'acide stéarique, l'acide linoléique, l'acide dodécanoique ou l'acide du tall oil Des exemples de ces alcools polyhydroxyliques partiellement estérifiés sont le mono-oléate de sorbitol, le distéarate de sorbitol, le mono-oléate de glycérol, le monostéarate de glycérol,
le didodécanoate d'érythritol.
Les esters peuvent aussi être dérivés d'alcools
non saturés tels que l'alcool allylique, l'alcool cinnamy-
lique, l'alcool propargylique, le 1-cyclohexène-3-ol et l'alcool oléylique D'autres classes d'alcools capables
de donner les esters de l'invention comprennent les éther-
alcools et les amino-alcools tels que, par exemple, les
alcools à substituants oxy-alkylène, oxy-arylène, amino-
alkylène et amino-arylène ayant un ou plusieurs radicaux
oxy-alkylène, amino-alkylène, oxy-arylène ou amino-arylène.

ron 150 radicaux oxy-alkylène dont le radical alkylène
contient 1 à environ 8 atomes de carbone.
Les esters peuvent être des diesters d'acides succiniques ou des esters acides,-c'est-à-dire des acides succiniques partiellement estérifiés, de même que des alcools ou phénols polyhydroxyliques partiellement estérifiés, c'est-à-dire des esters ayant des radicaux hydroxyle alcooliques ou phénoliques libres Des mélanges des esters illustrés cidessus sont envisagés dans le cadre
de l'invention.
On peut faire réagir les alcénylsuccinates avec l'acide borique ou un composé similaire contenant du bore pour former des dispersants boratés pouvant être utilisés dans la présente invention De tels succinates
boratés sont décrits dans le brevet des Etats-Unis d'Amé-
rique N O 3 533 945 Les succinates boratés entrent dans
le cadre de la définition du terme "alcénylsuccinate".
Les alcénylsuccinimides et -succinates sont présents dans les compositions d'huile lubrifiante de
l'invention en une quantité efficace pour agir comme dis-
persant et pour empêcher le dépôt d'impuretés formées dans l'huile pendant le fonctionnement du moteur La quantité d'alcénylsuccinimides et succinates peut aller d'environ 1 à environ 20 % en poids de la composition
totale d'huile lubrifiante La quantité d'alcénylsuccini-
mide ou -succinate présente dans la composition d'huile lubrifiante de l'invention va avantageusement d'environ
1 à environ 10 % en poids de la composition totale.
L'huile lubrifiante finie peut être simple -ou multigrade Des huiles lubrifiantes multigrades sont préparées par addition d'agents améliorant l'indice de viscosité (IV) Des exemples d'agents améliorant l'indice de viscosité sont des polyméthacrylates d'alkyle, des
copolymères éthylène-propylène, des copolymères styrène-

formulations de l'invention.
L'huile lubrifiante utilisée dans les composi-
tions de l'invention peut être une huile minérale ou
une huile synthétique de viscosité favorable à son utili-
sation dans le carter d'un moteur à combustion interne.
Des huiles lubrifiantes moteur ont ordinairement une vis-
cosité qui va d'environ 13 104 m 2 S à -17,80 C, d 0,227 104 m 2 S à 99 C Les huiles lubrifiantes peuvent

être dérivées de sources synthétiques ou naturelles Des huiles minérales pouvant être utilisées comme huile de base dans la présente invention comprennent des huiles paraffiniques, naphténiques et d'autres huiles qui sont normalement utilisées dans des compositions d'huile lubri- fiante Des huiles synthétiques comprennent des huiles
synthétiques hydrocarbonées et des esters synthétiques.
Des huiles hydrocarbonées synthétiques utiles comprennent des polymères liquides d'alpha-oléfines ayant la viscosité correcte On apprécie particulièrement les oligomères liquides hydrogénés d'alpha-oléfines en C 6 à C 12 tels que le trimère du 1-décène De même, on peut utiliser des

peut aussi utiliser des esters complexes préparés à par-
tir de mélanges d'acides mono et dicarboxyliques et
d'alcanols mono et dihydroxyliques.
Des mélanges d'huiles hydrocarbonées avec des huiles synthétiques sont également utiles Par exemple, des mélanges de 10 à 25 % en poids de trimère de 1-décène hydrogéné avec 75 à 90 % en poids d'une huile minérale de viscosité Saybolt (à 37,8 C) égale à 150 secondes

On charge dans un ballon de réaction de 2 litres 404,82 g ( 2 moles) de dodécanethiol et 148,16 g ( 2 moles) de glycidol On agite le mélange réactionnel et on le chauffe à 70 C, puis on y ajoute 5 g de triéthylamine La température s'élève rapidement à 210 C et le mélange réactionnel est refroidi lentement à 70 C et agité pendant 1 heure Le produit final, à savoir le 4-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol, est filtré à chaud sur
"Celite" Le rendement en produit est de 556,78 g.
On prépare d'une manière similaire le 4-thia-
1,2-heptadécanediol et le 4-thia-1,2-octadécanediol en remplaçant, respectivement, par une quantité équivalente
de tridécanethiol et de tétradécanethiol, le dodécane-
thiol dans le mode opératoire ci-dessus.
En variante, on peut préparer le 4-thia-1,2-
hexadécanediol c Oame suit: 44 g ( 0,6 mole) de chaux éteinte dans 100 ml
de méthanol sont ajoutés à 110 g ( 1 mole) d'alpha-chloro-
glycérine On chauffe le mélange réactionnel au reflux en l'agitant et on y ajoute en 0,5 heure 202 g ( 1 mole) de dodécanethiol On maintient le mélange réactionnel sous agitation pendant encore 1 heure, puis on chasse le
méthanol et on filtre le produit encore chaud sur "Celite".
On prépare d'une manière similaire le 5-thia-
1,2-hexadécanediol en remplaçant l'alpha-chloroglycérine
dans le mode opératoire ci-dessus par une quantité équi-
valente de 4-chloro-1,2-butanediol.
De même, on peut préparer le 5-thia-1,2-
heptadécanediol en remplaçant le dodécanethiol et l'alpha-
chloroglycérine dans le mode opératoire ci-dessus par des
quantités équivalentes de tridécanethiol et de 4-chloro-
1,2-butanediol.
Exemple 2
On charge dans un ballon de 3 litres 691 g ( 2,5 moles) de 4-thia-1,2hexadécanediol et on chauffe en agitant à 110 C On ajoute au ballon réactionnel 750 ml de toluène et 169,95 g ( 2,75 moles) d'acide borique On

chauffe le mélange réactionnel pendant environ 88 heures à la température d'ébullition azéotrope ( 90-120 C) en recueillant environ 121 ml d'eau Le produit est filtré à chaud sur "Celite", évaporé pendant une demi- heure à 135 C dans un évaporateur rotatif sous pression de 266,64 pa et conservé sous atmosphère d'azote Le poids de produit est de 672,51 g; le pourcentage de bore trouvé est de
3,50 % (théorie 3,581 %).
On peut borater d'une manière similaire le 4-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol, le 5-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol,
le 5-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol et le 4-thia-1,2-octadécane-
diol en remplaçant par des quantités équivalentes de chacun de ces diols le 4-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol dans le
mode opératoire ci-dessus.
Exemple 3
Dans cet essai, on a fait agir un moteur Ford 302 à 8 cylindres en V sur des dynamomètres en utilisant une huile lubrifiante additionnée et non additionnée des
alcanediols boratés contenant du soufre.
On a fait fonctionner le moteur dans les con-
ditions opératoires suivantes: 3000 tr/min pression (absolue) du collecteur, 32,17 k Pa température de l'eau à la sortie 90,5 C
température de la rampe de graissage 93,3 C.
Cet essai a été effectué dans des conditions
constantes avec l'huile de base CC 350 N contenant 200 milli-
moles/kg de polypropylène phénate de calcium sulfuré rendu
surbasique et 60 millimoles/kg de di(isobutyl/hexyl pri-
maire mixte)dithiophosphate de zinc, puis avec la même
huile de base contenant 2 % en poids de 4-thia-1,2-hexa-
décanediol boraté préparé conformément à l'exemple 2 Les
compositions d'huile de l'invention contenant l'alcane-
diol sulfuré boraté se sont montrées aptes à réduire la consommation de carburant du moteur de 2,0 % + 0,2 % en moyenne. De même, des huiles moteur formulées contenant chacune 2 % en poids de 5-thia-1,2heptadécanediol borate,

de 4-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol boraté ou de 4-thia-1,2-
octadécanediol boraté à la place du 4-thia-1,2-hexadécane-
diol boraté dans la formulation ci-dessus sont capables de réduire efficacement la consommation de carburant d'un moteur à combustion interne. Une huile entièrement formulée ( 20 N/80 N Chevron) contenant 2 % de 4-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol boraté de
l'exemple 1, 3,5 % d'un polyisobuténylsuccinimide de tétra-
éthylènepentamine, 30 millimoles/kg d'hydrocarbylsulfonate
de magnésium rendu surbasique, 20 millimoles/kg de polypropylêne-
phénate de calcium sulfuré rendu surbasique, 18 millimoles/ kg de O,O-di( 2-éthylhexyl)-dithiophosphate de zinc et ,5 % d'un agent améliorant l'indice de viscosité à base
de polyméthacrylate, est efficace pour réduire la consom-
mation de carburant d'un moteur à combustion interne.

Claims (8)
1 1,2-alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre, caractérisé en ce qu'il répond à la formule: R-S-(CH 2)m CH CH 2 O B/u I OH
dans laquelle R est ungroupe alkyle contenant 5 à 30 ato-
mes de carbone, de préférence 5 à 18 atomes de carbone et
m est égal à 1 ou 2.
2 Composé suivant la revendication 1, carac-
térisé en ce que le 1,2-alcanediol boraté contenant du
soufre est le 4-thia-1,2-hexadécanediol borate, le 5-thia-
1,2-hexadécanediol borate, le 5-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol
borate, le 4-thia-1,2-heptadécanediol boraté ou le 4-thia-
1,2-octadécanediol borate, notamment le 4-thia-1,2-hexa-
décanediol borate.
3 Composition d'huile lubrifiante, caracté-
risée en ce qu'elle comprend une proportion dominante
d'une huile de viscosité lubrifiante et une quantité effi-
cace plus faible d'un additif réducteur de friction qui est un 1,2alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre suivant
l'une des revendications 1 et 2.
4 Composition suivant la revendication 1, caractérisée en ce qu'elle contient environ 0,1 à 5 %
dudit additif.
Composition d'huile lubrifiante formulée en vue de son utilisation dans le carter d'un moteur à
combustion interne, pour réduire la consommation de car-
burant dudit moteur, caractérisée en ce qu'elle comprend
(a) une quantité dominante d'une huile de viscosité lubri-
fiante; et (b) une quantité efficace de chacun des ingré-
dients suivants: ( 1) un alcénylsuccinimide ou alcénylsuccinate ou des mélanges de ces composés,

( 2) un sel de métal du Groupe II d'un acide dihydrocarbyldithiophosphorique, ( 3) un hydrocarbylsulfonate de métal alcalin ou de métal alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique ou des mélanges de ces composés, ( 4) un phénate alkylé de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique ou des mélanges de ces composés, ( 5) un agent modificateur de friction qui est un 1,2alcanediol boraté contenant du soufre suivant l'une
des revendications 1 et 2.
6 Composition d'huile lubrifiante suivant la revendication 5, caractérisée en ce que
( 1) ledit alcénylsuccinimide est un polyiso-
buténylsuccinimide d'une polyalkylènepolyamine et ledit alcénylsuccinate est un polyisobuténylsuccinate d'un alcool polyhydroxylique;
( 2) le sel de métal de l'acide dihydro-
carbyldithiophosphorique est un dialkyldithiophosphate de zinc dont le groupe alkyle contient 4 à 12 atomes de carbone; ( 3) le métal du sulfonate de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique est le calcium, le magnésium ou le baryum ou leurs mélanges; ( 4) le métal du phénate de métal alcalin ou alcalino-terreux neutre ou rendu surbasique est le calcium, le magnésium ou le baryum;
( 5) le groupe R du 1,2-alcanediol boraté con-
tenant du soufre est un groupe alkyle contenant 5 à 30
atomes de carbone, et m est égal à 1.
7 Composition d'huile lubrifiante suivant la revendication 6, caractérisée en ce que
( 1) l'alcénylsuccinimide est un polyisobutényl-
succinimide de triéthylènetétramine ou un polyisobutényl-
succinimide de tétraéthylènepentamine et l'alcénylsucci-
nate est un polyisobuténylsuccinate de pentaérythritol;
( 2) le sel de métal alcalin de l'acide dihydro-
carbyldithiophosphorique est le O,O-di-( 2-éthylhexyl)-
dithiophosphate de zinc, le O,O-di-(isobutyl/hexyl primaire mixte) dithiophosphate de zinc ou le O,O-di-(sec -butyl/ hexyl secondaire mixte)dithiophosphate de zinc; ( 3) le sel métallique du sulfonate est un hydrocarbylsulfonate de magnésium ou de calcium rendu surbasique;
( 4) le phénate métallique est un phénate mono-
alkylé de calcium ou de magnésium sulfuré rendu surbasique;
( 5) le groupe R du 1,2-alcanediol boraté con-
tenant du soufre est un groupe alkyle contenant 5 à 18
atomes de carbone.
8 Composition d'huile lubrifiante suivant la revendication 6, caractérisée en ce que le 1,2-alcanediol
sulfuré boraté utilisé comme additif est le 4-thia-1,2-
hexadécanediol borate.
9 Procédé pour réduire la consommation de carburant d'un moteur à combustion interne, caractérisé en ce qu'il consiste à traiter les surfaces en mouvement dudit moteur avec une composition suivant l'une quelconque
des revendications 3 à 8.
