Abstract

The arrangement uses vibration detectors mounted at intervals along the safety rails. The detectors respond to mechanical vibration brought about by the impact a vehicle on the safety rail. The detectors generate an electric signal proportional to the amplitude of the vibration, and these signals are multiplexed for transmission to a central processing station. The signals from the various transducers are integrated, with a rise time constant of 0.5 sec and fall time of 1 sec, then compared one to the other to determine which is the largest signal, under a maximum energy criterion. From knowledge of the largest signal it is assumed that the accident happened nearest that transducer, and thus the location can be suitable displayed and an alarm initiated if required.
