Abstract

The bottom end of an electrode for chromium plating, comprising a lead sheath, through which a threaded rod of material of higher electrical conductivity is screwed, has a cap of non-conductive material. The cap may be internally threaded, and screwed onto the end of the central rod. Alternatively it may be hollow, and held in place by a nut screwed onto the rod, clamping the base of the cap against the end of the electrode body. The cap itself may have a screwed in removable cover, giving access to the nut, but protecting the protruding end of the threaded central rod. The non-conductive end cap prevents, in simple bar electrodes, swelling of the bottom end, due to structural changes in the lead sheath, caused by preferential action of the electric current. It also prevents stretching of the lead sheath over periods of 18 months or more in service.

Description

The present addition relates to an improvement to the anode for electrolytic chromium plating described in the main patent.

The Applicant has discovered that it. was possible to regularize the distribution of the current intensity in the alloy lead anode, by introducing into the latter a metal core of better conductivity (iron, copper, aluminum ...). Better rigidity is communicated simultaneously to the anode.

The realization of such an anode required that a perfect contact be made between the conductive metal core and the lead sheath.

The main patent therefore had for its object an anode for electrolytic chromium plating constituted by a sheath of alloyed lead into which is screwed in force a threaded rod of a metal having a conductivity higher than that of the sheath, such as iron, copper or aluminum, the external diameter of this rod being greater than the bore of the sheath, thus allowing self-tapping of said lead sheath by force screwing of said threaded rod.

The Applicant has found that this anode underwent modifications over time in the metallic structure (lead) situated at its lower part due to the preferential action of the electric current, in particular during the electrolysis of chromic solutions; these modifications can give rise to the appearance of a swelling at the lower part of the anode according to the phenomenon commonly known as champagne cork ".

Le brevet principal avait déjà propose de remédier à cet inconvénient en réalisant l'anode en forme de U. The main patent had already proposed to remedy this drawback by producing the U-shaped anode.

During its research, the plaintiff has now discovered that this drawback could be overcome, in the case of bar-shaped anodes if one fitted the lower end of said anode with a plug of non-conductive material. Only the unprotected part of the cylindrical body remains thus subjected to the action of the electric current, which makes it possible to avoid any modification appearing at the lower part of said anode (phenomenon called "champagne cork") as well as to prevent the elongation of alloyed lead constituting the body of the anode which is usually observed after a long period of use (18 months or more).

Thus, the addition has for object an anode of the type described in the main patent, that is to say constituted by a sheath of alloy lead in which is screwed a threaded rod of a metal with a conductivity higher than that of the sheath, the external diameter of this rod being greater than the bore of the sheath, thus allowing a self-tapping of said lead sheath by forcibly screwing said threaded rod, and whose originality consists in that said threaded rod crosses right through said sheath to allow the attachment of a plug of non-conductive material by means of a nut by means of which the bottom of said plug is clamped between the body of the anode and the aforementioned nut.

The present invention will be d (aJlllerrrs better understood and its advantages will become apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying schematic drawing, Figures 1 and 2 show two embodiments of the anode according to the present addition.

This anode 2 is composed, as described in the main patent, of a sheath 3 of alloy lead constituting the body of the anode, into which has been introduced, by force screwing, a threaded rod 4 of conductivity metal greater than that of the sheath, the diameter of this rod being greater than the bore of the sheath. A position hook, made of iron or copper (not shown), secures the anode 2 to the anode current supply bar.

According to the present addition, the lower end of this anode 2 is equipped with a plug 141 of non-conductive material, such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or the like.

In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the threaded rod 4 passes right through the sheath 3 to allow the fixing of the plug 14 through the thread provided for this purpose. This tapping is possibly protected by a metal insert and the blocking of the plug on the threaded rod guaranteed by the addition of a suitable adhesive.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the threaded rod 4 passes right through the sheath 3 to allow the fixing of the plug 14 by means of the nut 15 by which the bottom of the plug 14 is clamped between the body of anode 2 and nut 15.

In this embodiment, the hollow plug 14 is itself equipped with a removable cover 16 which is fixed to it by screwing or the like, thus making the nut 15 accessible while ensuring absolute protection of the threaded end of the rod. 4 leaving the lower part of the sheath 3 constituting the body of the anode 2.

These embodiments make it possible to eliminate the frequently observed phenomena of modifications and in particular swelling of the lower end of the bar-shaped anodes as well as the elongation of the lead sheath during long periods of use. The wear of the anode is regularized over the entire surface and it is thus possible to guarantee, over a long period, the consistency of the anode surface / cathode surface ratio.

As is obvious and as follows from the above, the invention is not limited to the sole embodiments which have been described above by way of nonlimiting example; on the contrary, it embraces all of the variant embodiments thereof, whatever the shape and structure of the stopper, the nature of the non-conductive material constituting it.
