Abstract

The storage tank comprises an outer casing with a floating roof, and a flexible membrane joined to the roof periphery and to the inside of the casing. A membrane ballast ring is included, holding the membrane permanently taut between the roof and casing. This ring can comprise rollers and distance pieces threaded onto an endless rope forming a torus. Both rollers and distance pieces can turn freely on the rope. Compared with the conventional method of water-ballasting, the design avoids the risk of the roof tilting or jamming.

Description

Réservoir perfectionné.Advanced tank.

I1 is known to build floating roof tanks, that is to say constituted by a generally cylindrical enclosure in which a float rises or falls depending on the level of liquid contained in the enclosure and covers almost the entire surface free of liquid. I1 is however necessary to leave between the periphery of the float and the cylindrical wall, a clearance for the good functioning of the reservoir. To isolate the liquid of the reservoir from the external atmosphere, one places between the floating roof and the interior face of the enclosure a flexible membrane whose length and place of attachment to the enclosure are such that when the tank is empty, the membrane extends downward along the internal face of the enclosure and that when is full, it extends upwards. Generally not to be deteriorated by the pressure of the liquid which it undergoes when the tank is full and to ensure a certain lubrication of its movements, one disposes above the membrane (on its face turned towards the external medium) a liquid of back-pressure , especially water).

I1 pours in practice that the behavior of the membrane even with a back pressure liquid is very different from that theoretically imagined. It is in fact influenced by the ratio existing between the height and the diameter of the tank by the value of the clearance provided between the floating roof and the enclosure by the balancing of the float, by the greater or lesser flexibility of the membrane. and the heterogeneity of its mechanical characteristics, by the volume of liquid back pressure used, etc. It results from all these factors that anomalies in the operation of the tank can occur both at the rise of the roof and at its lowering during filling and emptying and lead to an abnormal inclination of the roof which can lead to its immersion, to a blockage of this roof, to a reversal of the membrane above the roof which could cause it to tear.

The present invention intends to remedy these drawbacks by proposing an improved reservoir in which a means of interning the membrane has been provided which ensures a substantially constant tension whatever the degree of filling of the reservoir, thus ensuring prevention of any floating. randomness of the membrane under the roof which can lead to the above-mentioned anomalies.

The invention therefore has for this purpose an improved tank which comprises between an outer enclosure and a floating roof a weighted membrane by means of a heavy ring ensuring a permanent tension of the latter between the roof and the enclosure which whatever the level of the roof in the enclosure.

Preferably, said ring is constituted by a succession of braced rollers stacked on a cable closed on itself so as to constitute a torus. These rollers and spacers will advantageously be mounted free to rotate on said cable.

The invention will be better understood during the description given below by way of purely indicative and nonlimiting example which will make it possible to identify the advantages and the secondary characteristics thereof.

Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a schematic sectional view of the improved tank according to the invention,
- Figure 2 is a detailed sectional view of the ballast ring.

Referring first to Figure 1, we see a tank consisting of a cylindrical enclosure 1, closed at its base where it is provided with holes not shown for filling and emptying. The liquid 2 which it is likely to contain carries on its free surface a float 3 forming a floating roof of the tank. The diameter of this roof 3 is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the enclosure to allow movement of the roof in the enclosure according to variations in the level of the liquid 2. Upper stops 4 are provided at the top of the enclosure to limit the elevation of the roof while lower stops 5 constitute a support for the roof in its low position 3a retaining it at a certain height relative to the bottom of the tank.

Between the roof 3 and the enclosure 1, there extends a flexible membrane 6 (here in the form of a cylindrical skirt) to close the above-mentioned operating clearance and to prevent any contact between the liquid 2 and the ambient atmosphere. This flexible membrane 6 is fixed by one of its ends to the periphery of the roof 3 and by its other end to the inner surface of the enclosure substantially halfway up the latter. FIG. 1 illustrates the two extreme positions (6 and 6a in broken lines) that the membrane can take, depending on whether the tank is full or empty. On the outer face of this membrane 6, a certain volume of liquid 7 called "backpressure" has been placed in order to balance the hydrostatic pressure at which the membrane is subjected to prevent it from being pressed against the enclosure 1. The liquid therefore helps the movements of the membrane by ensuring a kind of lubrication between it and the enclosure 1. The shape of the floating roof 3 will be noted making it possible to provide a free volume to accommodate the liquid 7 in the low position 3a of the latter,
Finally, in this figure there is shown at 8 a ballast ring for the membrane which is housed in the return of the latter. This heavy ring creates a load uniformly distributed on each of the sections of the membrane which tightens and maintains them substantially parallel to the enclosure 1 preventing any random floating movement of the membrane under the roof which may be the cause of jamming, tearing or efforts tending to unbalance the roof.

Figure 2 illustrates a preferred embodiment
of said ring. It consists of a central cable 9 closed over it
even by means of a connecting sleeve 10 in which the ends
of the cable are secured by screws 11, after having arranged
on this cable, like the pearls of a necklace, a succession of
rollers 12 and spacers 13, substantially free to rotate on the
cable. The length of the ring, its weight, the number and the diameter
rollers, the length of the spacers will depend on the characteristics.
dimensional ticks of the reservoir, its geometry and the nature of the
stored fluid. Finally, note that this ring is independent of the
membrane and tank and can be put in place or removed volon
tee which allows to improve without modification, the operation
of devices already in service.
