Abstract

A portable, packaged unit is described which an be used for heating or cooling wine or other drinkable liq. in the course of a mfg. process. The unit comprises a reversible, vapour compression heat pump and a heat exchanger which has coaxial, cylindrical vessels contg. A heat transfer coil in the annular space between the vessels. The heat pump is connected to the coil. Pref. the inner vessel has a bottom inlet for liq. to be processed and overflows into the annualr space between the vessels. Overflowing liq. from the inner vessel contacts the heat transfer coil in the annular space and is discharged at the of the outer vessel. The heat exchanger may comprises several coaxial vessels with one or more than transfer coils in each of the inter-vessel annular spaces. The heat exchanger has heat pump are pref. installed, together with interconnecting pipework, on a mobile, wheeled trolley. The packaged unit is compact and economical compared with shell and tube and plate heat exchangers with external sources of heat transfer fluid. The unit has a wide range of applications since prods. can be either heated or cooled.
