Abstract

The external differential-lock may be used on automobiles, preventing differential rotation of the two output half shafts on icy roads. Gear wheels are keyed to each of the half shafts, and locking gear-wheels are keyed to the opposite ends of the axle. The axle comprises the offset bar of a pivotable stirrup operated by a cable from the dash board. The stirrup pivots about an axle to lower the wheels into engagement with the gear wheels which must now revolve at the same speed with the differential effectively by-passed. The first axle may be in two parts with a dog coupling providing angular float between the gear wheels.
