Abstract

Feed compsn. for animal rearing contains the normal components for the particular species together with 10-2000 ppm of thiazolidine 4-carboxylic acid (I) its precursors or metabolites, in solid or liq. form. Suitable precursors of (I) include cysteine and its hydrochloride. Suitable metabolites are cysteine and cystine. If desired the compsns. may further contain a polyol and/or a sugar, the wt. ratio (I):polyol or sugar being 1:0.5-1:200, pref. 1:10-1:50. A pref. sugar is sorbitol, which is added in the wt. ratio 1:40. The daily rate of incorporation of (I) is pref. 10 mg/kg live wt. Incorporation of (I) gives increased wt. gain, better coat, and in dairy cows, an increased milk yield.
