Abstract

The vehicle anti-theft mechanism associated with the ignition lock has a bolt which moves parallel to its axis between locked and unlocked positions. The mechanism allows a large number of parts to be common to all locks as opposed to the wide variety of part types required by conventional transverse shaft type locks. The bolt shaft (6) is mounted within the ignition lock housing and moves axially driven by a spring (7) as the ignition key (3) is turned. The shaft is cranked and terminated in a radial finger (9) which engages with an oblique slot, angled at forty five degrees, in the bolt proper (13). The angle is chosen to ensure orthogonal and non-orthogonal movement of the bolt as the ignition key is rotated. The bolt movement is into or out-of a slot on the steering column providing a lock on its movement.
