Abstract

The energy expended in creating artificial waves and swells is recovered by holding the wave making ramp (1) between two floating pontoons (2,3) which may be ballasted such that upper edge of the tamp is level with the water surface. This is attached by two hinged lines (5,7) running across its width enclosing an 'S' shaped section (6). The upper hinge pivots along one edge of a reservoir (8). The reservoir moves between the pontoons maintaining a vertical position hold by pins (10) pivoted at each end. Turbo - generators (15,16) are driven by the reservoir contents via two conduits (13,14) attached to a shaft (17) between the pontoons. The conduits may be controlled by valves at their output ends. The energy recovery method may also be used in sea platforms, floating factories etc.

Description

This addendum refers to patent application No. 79 14 850 filed on June 11, 1979. Its purpose is to describe a power station recovering the force of the swell by using the energy of breaking waves artificially created by this power station, as in Patent No. 79 14 850 but according to another alternative embodiment.

Artificial breaking waves are always created by an inclined plane (1) but the latter instead of being supported by a fixed structure placed on the bottom, as was the case in the above patent, serves as a rigid connection to two identical floats (2) and (3) with which it constitutes a kind of catamaran hull.

These floats can be ballasted or deballasted to position the inclined plane (1) relative to the mean sea level so that the upper edge of this inclined plane (1) is almost flush with this level. This upper edge (4) is provided with a hinge (5) on which is articulated a shaped S-shaped springboard (6). The upper edge of this springboard in turn is articulated by means of a hinge (7) on the edge of a tank (8) fixed on a ballastable float (9).

A lever (10) attached on one side to a pivot (11) of the float (3) and on the other to a pivot (12) of the float (9), constitutes with the springboard (6) a deformable connection which allows to the tank (8) and to the float (9) which carries it to remain always vertical whatever the draft of the float (9).

This arrangement allows the height adjustment of the edge (7) of the springboard and the reservoir as a function of the height of the swell.

At least two pipes, (13) and (14), containing in their center two turbo-generators (15) and (16), allow the water accumulated in the tank (8) to return to the sea after having turned these turbo-generators.

These pipes are fixedly mounted on a cross member such as (17) strengthening the connection of the catamaran floats (2) and (3). In one embodiment, they open into the tank (8) through two sealed vertical plates (18) and (19) which can slide relative to the rear wall (22) of the tank (8).

Two valves (20) and (21) make it possible to open or close the rear of the pipes (13) and (14).

Depending on the amount of water brought into the tank (8) by the breaking waves, at least one of the valves (20) or (21) is opened or closed.

The unit can be anchored by a single line at a point located in the middle of the lower edge of its inclined plane (23) which allows it to orient itself automatically to stay facing the direction of the swell.

The proposed device is usable in recovering the energy of the swell, and can be used to supply either built-up areas on the shore, or installations on offshore platforms, such as oil fields or floating factories.
