Abstract

Continuous, centrifugal drying is of the type having an upwardly divergent conical bowl which is rotated on a vertical axis inside a casing. The space inside the casing is divided, by a circular wall around the bowl and a base beneath it, into a chamber for receiving liq. and another for receiving drained prod. Coaxial annular skirt is fixed externally to the top of the bowl, inside the wall. The skirt extends down so that its bottom edge just projects through a narrow annular slot in an annular, horizontal flange fitted inside the wall. Annular space enclosed by the wall, skirt and flange now contains a pod of wire mesh to trap droplets entrained in the air current passing through the space. Trapped liq. flows by gravity into the liq. reception chamber. Rubber sealing is pref. fitted between the top edge of the wall and bowl. Used in centrifugal drying of a prod., esp. sugar crystals in refineries. Improved efficiency is obtd. partic. elimination of leaks, even when the drained liq. is of low viscosity.
