Abstract
A bi-metallic strip thermal overload relay is suited to the protection of the starting resistances of induction motors which undergo frequent starting and has its operating temperature adjustable by varying the current in the bimetallic strip (26). This is achieved by setting, via external terminals (35,36), parallel paths comprising resistors (31) or diodes across the fixed series dropping resistor (32) in the supply to the bi-metal. The contact (25) of the thermal relay is in series with the operating coil (6) of a contactor which switches the incoming AC supply (3,4,5). The supply to the thermal relay is connected only while the starting resistances (8,9,10) are in circuit, so protecting against unnecessarily long starting procedures. The thermal inertia of the relay protects against overheating due to excessively frequent starting.
