Abstract
Single-core, flexible, electric cable for high d.c. voltages comprises a metal conductor, an inner potential-controlling layer, a high-voltage insulation, a screen, and a mantle. Improvement is that the conductor is coated with the potential-controlling layer so that the radius R of the latter satisfies the expression ROPT=UO/E max. where ROPT = radius of potential-controlling layer in mm, UO=nominal voltage against earth in kV, and Emax. = max. permissible field strength of insulating material in kV/mm. Conductor is dimensioned so that the difference between its radius and that of the potential-controlling layer amounts to the required wall thickness of the latter. Insulation is pref. a high-tensile low density polyethylene. The screen is pref. sheathed in non-flammable polyester urethane.
