Abstract

The block (4) of the internal combustion engine has a passage machined on the side opposite to the exhaust manifold. This carries the cooling water, which passes out through an opening in the side of the engine block. The water is conveyed into the cylinder head (5) by a U-shaped pipe (3) transferring the water directly from the engine block side opening to a similar opening in the side of the cylinder head. One pipe per pair of cylinders is sufficient and the arrangement avoids the need for water passage holes in the cylinder gasket.
