Abstract
Reciprocating pump or compressor is driven by a supply of low pressure fluid. The pump has a piston which is driven backwards and forwards in a cylinder. The driven piston has a coaxial piston rod which is extended through one end of the cylinder to be fitted with a driving piston of much larger dia. than the first piston. The driving piston is double-acting inside a low pressure driving cylinder which is coaxial with the pump cylinder. Towards each end of its stroke, the driving piston pushes to its closed position the outlet valve at that end. Displacement of that valve actuates a linkage which opens the outlet valve at the other end of the cylinder and simultaneous switches motive fluid supply from one side of the piston to the other. The driven piston in the pumping cylinder is pref. double-acting. Pref. the pump cylinder is supplied with atmos. air or motive fluid to be compressed or pumped. Utilises a low pressure fluid to drive a pump or compressor partic. to compress and deliver methane from an anaerobic digester of organic waste. The low pressure fluid is pref. methane at digester pressure, automobile exhaust gas or water from a header tank. Simple and inexpensive means of pressurising methane for storage is obtd.
