Abstract

The Diesel engine (1) with a fuel injector (4, 5) comprises an accelerator pedal (6) -operated throttle (3) in the air intake (2). The throttle is so arranged that, when the engine idles, i.e. in the rest position of the pedal, and the engine is at normal operating temperature, the flow area through the intake provides only just sufficient air for engine operation. This considerably reduces irregular running due to speed fluctuation. The arrangement may cause the intake vacuum under these conditions to be 0.1 to 0.5 bar. Where the pedal is connected to the fuel injection pump (4) the throttle may provide the air flow as required for greater than idling speeds.
