Abstract

Parent patent describes a heat exchanger comprising an upper chamber through which a cold fluid passes and a lower chamber through which a hot fluid passes. Heat is exchanged between the two fluids by a series of heat transfer tubes. Each tube extends into both chambers but is sealed so as not to communicate with either. The sealed tube contains a heat transfer liq. and inert gas. Liq. vapourises in the part of the tube in the lower chamber and condenses in the part of the tube in the upper chamber. The improvement is that the upper chamber is formed as an annular zone surrounding the top end of the tube. The upper chamber has inlet and outlet passages. The outlet passage pref. is connected to one or more tubular elements passing through the lower chamber upstream of the sealed tube(s). Furnace exhaust gas can be used to raise steam.
