Abstract

Lock suitable for general use and applicable to vehicles, having a combined mechanical and electronic operation. The lock uses an orthodox form of key which can also be used in other, purely mechanical, locks if required. The lock consists of a fixed barrel (1) in which a rotor (3) can turn when released by the correct keying action. The rotor has a slot (4) containing a piston (7) which in the locked position is held within the slot by a sprung (9) piston (8) set radially in the barrel such that they cross the barrel-rotor interface preventing rotation. Insertion of the key (5) into the slot pushes back the pistons allowing the rotor to turn bringing its position into proximity with a sensor (10) which via controlling circuitry (12, 13) withdraws an electromagnetically (15) operated piston (14) from the rotor.
