Abstract
The animated or static illuminated display uses synthetic monofilament light guides to provide a display up to about one metre square. The filament length is limited to about 60 cm to minimise attenuation with a diameter between 0.5 and 1.0mm. The filaments are brought together (5) from the display (8) into a group with their end faces polished and squared forming a screen occupying an area matching that projected by the light source (2). The light source is a bulb up to about 20W and parabolic reflector powered from a transformer (1). Heat isolation from the filament end faces is by an air gap and transparent screen (3). The display data is supplied by a rotating and perforated disc (6) set close to the filament ends. Groups of these units can be built up to provide a larger display.
