Abstract

1507883 Illuminated signs BARR & STROUD Ltd 21 April 1976 [6 May 1975] 18843/75 Heading G5C [Also in Division F4] An illuminated traffic control sign comprises a light source 34 mounted in a housing 17, a screen on which the shape and/or colour of the sign is defined, and an assembly 26 of optical fibre bundles arranged to transmit light between the source and the screen, the assembly being such that adjacent the source the bundle ends are closely packed in a holder 27 and adjacent the screen the bundle ends are arranged in discrete groups, each group comprising bundles which respectively emanate from different concentric regions of the closely-packed end. The regions are subjected to different intensities of illumination from the source and the invention provides a substantially uniform level of illumination over the surface of the screen. The screen comprises a face plate 25 made of dark-coloured plastics material to reduce phantom illumination and provided with apertures in which the bundle groups 40 are secured, together with a coloured prismatic plate (23) and a shotblasted diffusing plate (22). The source 34 is a tungsten-halogen lamp mounted in a dichroic ellipsoidal reflector 31 which reflects visible light but transmits infra-red radiation.
