Abstract

The dynamometer measures the force applied at the hook of a towed vehicle such as a caravan or boat trailer. The instrument stands on the ground at the same height as the towing vehicle towing ball and is readily stored in the vehicle tool kit. The dynamometer comprises a ball (1) with a threaded hole connected to a central shaft (5) which is locked to it by a lock nut (2). The shaft passes through a body (6) and is locked at the other end by a nut (7) and lock nut (5) which act as stops as the shaft slides in the body. The body acts as a foor whose upper end has a cap (3) which slides over it to a shoulder against the action of a spring. The cap carries weight graduation marks which register against an index (9) visible through a slot.
